A certain white haired dark elf wondered what his wife was thinking. Him talk with the student of his that was with child and hated him. Aeto was not a fool nor was he willing to get chewed out by the princess. It was just a smirk at the girls. He always smirked at those he didn't know. Just like Acacia would chuckle with a smile.
Speaking of his wife, he planned on forgoing the dinner she was making to show how much he didn't like doing this with the threat of her going to stay with Ivy for three weeks and leaving him to cook for himself.
Still, Aeto walked to a popular cafe that Ivy said served decent melts with a lovely herbal tea. Such a thing coming from the picky eater of an assassin was a sign that she was letting him be part of her life.
He walked to one of the outdoor tables and sat down, not paying attention to the charming waitress that seemed surprised that such a handsome elf had come.

Thali was not at all pleased. She didn't fancy meeting with Aeto, especially not after what had happened at the ball. Still, it had been Acacia's idea; and the elvish princess trusted the woman more than most. She walked into the cafe with a sigh; she hadn't dressed up for the occasion. She wore jeans and a spaggeti strap shirt with a zip-up jacket over it due to the cold of the season. She resembled, well, what she was. A pregnant teenager.
She frowned as she noticed Aeto, but sat at his table. "So," she started. "Acacia convinced you too?"

"She threatened me actually. Three weeks of my own cooking without her around," Aeto was a bad cook. He knew this and his wife used it sometimes as a weakness against him. "Old age haven't made her less convincing."
He personally thought she dressed too lightly for the coldness of the seasons, but kept his mouth shut about that. "I'm sorry about what happened at the ball."

Thali smirked. She could certainly see Acacia threatening him; and personally, she thought he deserved it. The way he had treated his granddaughter at the ball... the very thought of that made her angry. She flashed him a glare.
"I am not quite ready to forgive you," she said flatly. "The way you treated your granddaughter at the ball... How could you, Uncle Aeto? How could you? She was excited about meeting you, and you treated her like that!" She shot another glare at him, her hormones getting the best of her.
"I don't blame her if she hates you," she added heatedly. "To be called a thing by her own grandfather." She paused. "And you weren't very polite to my daughters either," she mused.

Aeto had been threatened with that for years when he was first married to Acacia. Though he did look away at the mention of how he acted to his granddaughter. Even Acacia had chewed him a new one and he was still sleeping in the guest room because of it, forbidding him from sleeping next to her during the night.
"I am sorry about that. I was just surprised by how she appeared and my instincts kicked in. She seems to be very shy and nervous about her appearance."
He flinched when Thali spoken of what he had called little Eve. He did raise an eyebrow at the mention of his impolite behavior. "I just smirked at them. I've done that for years. I smirk at everyone I don't know. It's my mask."
It even sounded to him that he was making excuses, but he had meant no offense to the girls when he smirked.
"I was on edge and excited about seeing you again. I missed you very much." The last part was very soft.

"I'm not the one you need to apologize to," Thali huffed. "And she is. You certainly didn't boost her confidence any! Treating her like that--" she hesitated, looking puzzled. "I don't remember you wearing a mask like that when I was younger," she said, anger leaving as quickly as it had appeared.
She stood and went over to him, wrapping her arms around him. "I missed you too, Uncle Aeto," she said. "I'm sorry I snapped at you at the ball. I was... on edge too. I wondered what you'd think of me."

Aeto smiled slightly, "Well, Faust convinced me to come visit her and see her artwork."
He frowned slightly, "Then again when you were younger, I hadn't lost both of my babies. It's helped me keep your father from worry about my mental and emotional health."
The old dark elf smled and hugged her back. "I'd think the world of you, my dear. Nothing would change how I think of you. You worried me very much the years after you left. That's why I was on edge."

Thali gave him a concerned look. She, it seemed, was also concerned about his mental and emotional health. She tightened her hold on him, shaking her head. "You never lost me," she said. "I was never far away," she added, pulling away slightly to smile at him. She put a finger to his chest. "Wherever I am, I'm always in here," she said.
She paused, and nodded in understanding. "You never need to worry about me," she reassured him. "I'm safe, if I wasn't, I would have come home," She put a hand to his cheek. Clearly the elves of Lynwood were used to more physical contact than what Gaians might have considered proper. "I didn't mean to worry you," she said. "I worried about you, too," confessed the elf.

Some thought he might end up going insane before his wife would. He doubted it, but smiled grimly, "It felt like it when you ran away. I thought you would end up as Leirre had, dead and gone or in some lab being tortured by humans."
Aeto reached in a bag he had brought with him and handed a leather bound sketch with gold leafing and a string clasp to hold it close. "Remember the story I told you when we went to the first district. The one about the father and daughter?"
"It's true. This sketch book is full of flowers I had pressed and drawn for you."

Thali took the sketch book and hugged it, before looking up at Aeto. "I was taken care of by kind humans," she told him. "Not vampires or anything of that sort. No labs; the people I stayed with were under the impression that I was human." That and the fact that Thali had still appeared much like a young child at the time they adopted her had encouraged them.
"They died, though," Thali looked upset for a moment, before tightening her hold on Aeto. "I remember the story," she said, wiping at her eyes. "Thank you, Uncle Aeto. You don't know how much this means to me."

Just like with Leirre, Aeto had found a coping method with plants and flowers. Hoping that she was all right and safe. He hadn't known that she was with a good family. Still, he was grateful for her being taken care by kind people. He still hadn't asked his own daughter about her life after she was taken from them.
"I am thankful they were kind people," he smiled with a tear falling from his eyes. He hugged her tight, "Just don't worry me like that again please. I know our kind lives forever, but my heart won't be able to take losing you again."

Thali returned Aeto's hug just as tightly. "I promise," she whispered into his ear. "I don't think my heart could take it either. I missed you." She had missed all of Lynwood really, but her pride wouldn't allow her to say that. "I won't run away again."
She paused, and pulled out a photo album. It wasn't a large one, though the cover was nice and bright. "This is for you," she told him. "It has some of me," she opened it and pointed to the first picture. It was a faded black and white one; there were two girls playing in it.
"That was my adoptive sister, Elizabeth," Thali explained. "I tried to get as many pictures of my family for you. The kids are there too."

The shield Aeto kept around his heart melted at the sight of the photo album. Though it took most of his self control to not cry at the gesture his favorite student had given. "Thank you, Thali. I will treasure it always."
He was glad that she wouldn't run away again. He had meant it when he said his heart wouldn't take it if he lost one of his girls again. Though he didn't know Ivy enough to think of her as his child again. He looked at the picture and smiled, "You and her are adorable, by the way."
