"Gorram flyin' morons, flittin' 'bout like they're sharding flitters- Hand t'mah forge I'll beat their heads in iffen they come near me-" Clearly, not everyone in Malvern was a cheerful person. With all of the outside riders here, one candidate in particular was not having a lot of fun. It didn't help that the whole flight had happened, and there'd been a lot of testosterone in the air. Now, Rene was just as manly as the next guy, but come on. That had been very unnecessary.
Who even knew what she was currently snarling about under her breath as she stalked about. Not that Rene needed a reason to be angry with something. A lot of the anger was bluffing, and she always seemed to be bluffing.
The short haired girl walked into the lower caverns and sat down with a huff at a table. She pillowed her hands on her arms and glared at nothing in particular. Rene, you were pouting, and it was nothing short of adorable.

Already seated at another table and chattering away quite happily, Adine still couldn't help but notice the unhappy-looking girl - boy, she didn't look much like a girl though! - enter and take her own seat from where she could glare at the room.
Uh-oh, someone was in a bad mood! That angry, pouting look was unmistakable - and unacceptable! Not that people didn't have a right to be grumpy or something, but who honestly liked being grumpy? Who wouldn't rather be in a good mood than a bad one? So, naturally, anyone who was unhappy was in need of a little help, and Adi was as helpful as she was cheerful.
Bidding farewell to her original table, the candidate flipped her colorfully-ribboned braid over her shoulder and made her way over to the other girl. She sat down without waiting for an invitation and offered a bright smile and friendly, "Hello!"

Whatever typically broody thoughts that Rene was thinking of were interupted when some strange girl sat down by her. Rene sat up abruptly, looking towards the candidate. First impressions were everything, it was said. The smith girl rarely gave a good first impression. Typically angry, with short hair and a scowling face. And this girl that was blithely sitting down? She seemed the typical girly girl sort. Was she sitting to gossip, or just to be friendly?
"What're you on about?"
Whatever the cause for her sitting down, the chances of Rene being polite to her were about the same as another White hatching at Benden. Or, as their luck had been going lately, another Queen hatching at Benden. Rene watched the girl with a rather guarded look on her face and a very unwelcoming sort of posture.

That was rather unpleasant, now wasn't it? Her expression wilted momentarily, but Adi was not one to be put off so easily, and soon resummoned her smile. "You look like you could use some company."
The girl offered her hand across the table. "I'm Adi! What's your name?"

The smith girl smirked a bit when the other girl's expression wilted. There, that'd teach you to talk to strangers in bad moods, wouldn't it? Of course, this girl had to be one of those that bounced back and started chattering again. Sometimes, she could get people to leave her alone at first greeting. Those were good times.
Ah, but this was not to be one of them. She'd just have to deal with it. She slid her hand over the table to grip the other girl's, not gently but not meaning to injure. "Not really, but you're already here." She said dryly to the cheerful girl. "M'Rene. You onna them Weyr kids, or another holder?"
If she was a Weyr kid, she likely wasn't going to gossip about hair. If she was a holder girl, then she'd likely start gossiping about girly things and that would annoy Rene to no end.

Adine proceeded to brighten when Rene accepted her presence - even if she didn't sound all that happy about it - and even made conversation. Progress already! In her mind, anyway, it was a good sign. Taking her hand back, she proceeded eagerly, "Yeah, I'm a Weyr kid."
And the other girl, of course, was a holder, or else they'd be acquainted already. "Have you been here long? What hold are you from?"

"Mmm." A Weyrkid, huh? Well, they were sometimes better than the holder girls, and sometimes worse. All depends. This one seemed fairly honest. S'long as she was't one of those girls what were proud of sleeping with every rider and his brother.
"Mmhm. Got dragged up bout... Half a turn ago? My Pa's at Namor Hold. So I don't know too much 'bout you Weyrfolk types, 'cept what I hear in rumor." She leaned her elbows on the table, looking towards the girl. Hmmm. To be bluntly honest, or to be... Oh, like that was even an option.
"So, that whole 'flyin' an' everyone beddin' each other thing', that happen often? Cuz I was just startin' t'think the rumors were just Ladies' cryin' tails."

"Always thought it would be kinda neat to get Searched." Adi chuckled. "Goes both ways, I think. I sure don't know much about Holds, 'cept that people say you're all hidebound. Not that there's anything wrong with that, whatever makes you happy."
"Mm, whenever a gold rises, so once or twice a Turn - well, maybe it'll be a little more than that now I guess, since we've got two. It was a lot crazier this time though, what with all the extra people here." There had been a lot of dragons up there, and a lot of disappointed riders. Not to mention what it did to everyone else anyway! "You can try to avoid it and hole up if you want, but most Weyrfolk are used to it."

"Searchin' warn't so neat. The flight, though... That was neat." Rene admitted. "Dunno if you all get t'fly whenever you want, but we don't get ta." That had been the best part. Having her Father watch her with pride, feeling the warm dragon beneath her, hearing the bugle as he launched himself into the air, the fearful feeling of Between-!
"S'pose some are. Da ain't so much. I mean, he takes his craft serious, but who wouldn't be? But he was workin' on teachin' me. Made some folks pretty mad, but we don't care none."
Great. So she'd have to listen to that a few times per year? Wonderful. "Mmmph. Suppose I'll get used to all of that crackdust if I stay here, huh?"

"Nah. Maybe if a rider's real nice, and the dragon too. Some of 'em are kinda touchy." And they were allowed to be. They were dragons; it was their prerogative.
Adi blinked, curious. "Why would they be mad about it? What craft is it?"
"Yeah, probably. 'Specially if you Impress. Well, unless you get a dragon that's not interested." Which was most of the Atypicals. But who could tell what color someone might end up with? You could narrow it down a little, maybe, depending on certain preferences, but not by much.

"Mmm. Kinda sad, then, watchin them all fly off and leavin' us behind." Rene picked at her teeth, eyeing the younger girl. She didn't seem that bad. Wasn't telling Rene to be more of a lady, or being aghast at her choices in words and speech patterns. Perhaps weyrkids weren't that bad after all.
"Smithin'. Da were teachin' me. S'pose I mighta went to th'hall iffen he wanted." Rene shifted slightly, leaning a bit towards the weyrborn girl. She extended her hand again, fingers splayed apart, proudly displaying the scars and burns she'd gotten during her life. "Fair 'nuff at it, I reckon. Da never bitched at me."
Rene grimaced a bit. Ehn. "They all do that flyin' shite? Tha'd take gettin' used to..."

Adine leaned forward to peer at Rene's scars, admiring them with an "Ooh." Scars were sort of neat, at least once they were scars and, y'know, didn't hrut anymore. "That's awesome! I kinda think about Farmcraft, sometimes, for if I don't Impress."
"Most of 'em, yeah. Golds, greens, and crimsons all rise - and greens and crimsons do it a lot more - and blues, browns, and bronzes chase. Crimsons are the only Atypicals who mate - the silvers, blacks, and whites aren't interested. Not that there are any whites around either way," Adi added with a chuckle, "But you never know. Maybe this Hatching!"
