That title's a little misleading.
ANYWAY
So, the marching band just got back from our competition in Las Vegas. We're the only band that goes on through November -- everyone else's season ends in October -- so this was our last chance to show what we can do. Of course, not being local to Nevada, we're always a little intimidated.
HOWEVER
We ended up being in ninth place out of twenty-five bands. We advanced to finals and got ninth (go figure) out of twelve. Our school has never made it to finals.
But now everyone's buzzing about section leaders next year.
Now, I don't want to try out. I'm good with just being on the drumline, but right now we figure there's two people that's competition for section leader: one of them plays tenors, and the other plays bass drum. Personally, I prefer the one that plays bass. I respect her more than I do the guy that plays tenors. However, the only reason I could see that he (the guy who plays tenors) could get it would be because he plays tenors. Now, do you think this could happen? Is this fair?
Another thing: one of the freshmen who plays snare decides he's gonna try out for section leader next year. He thinks he has a good chance. Haha. :3
Moving along...
So: do you feel sad about the end of the season? Do you like it when the season ends? Do you go on any major trips?
Do you have someone you despise in your section?

No its not fair the band directors should look at how good of a leader they are and how well they are followed.
Our section leader and 2 veterans are juniors this year and after they graduate im trying to be section leader. Now im in a section full of boys (except for the other two girls who joined a month after i did). And of course we play beritone. one of the freshmen in my section thinks me,denise, and tiffany (the other girls) cant be section leader and he thinks hes better than us. But hes not really there for rehersal because of football so i honestly don't think he would be that great of a section leader.

Our school had playing tests for it. Being a freshman they didn't expect much. Apparently I'm a choice for the Alto section leader for next year...here's the downside I'm going back to trombone next year. I did it the first half, Alto the second

Basically section leader is falling down on either me or a tenor player. Now while I'm there for almost everypractice except for like when I get seriously ill. I've missed otwo practices in 2 years. The Tenor player is a great drummer (better then me) but misses out monday night practices. and the occasional after school gig. Any thoughts?

In our band I think we have a section leader for each different perc instrument...I know we definitely have more than one. I don't think the instrument you play should matter. It's more about leadership than playing ability anyway.
I do feel sad about the impending end of season, because it's my last ever (I'm graduating college). As for trips, we go wherever football goes, so we're all hoping they get a post-season.

I have mixed feelings every year at the end of the season.
I think it went something like this...
Freshman: Omg it's over already? No! Sophomore: I don't get to hang out with *insert guy I like here* anymore? Dangit. Junior: NOOOO. THAT WAS THE BEST. Glad I don't have to deal with my section anymore, though... Senior: I'm going to miss the people more than the activity. --- We usually go on a trip to Kings Dominion the last weekend of the season, but this year it didn't work out due to timing of States. Sadface.
I don't despise anyone in my section but the bassoonist-turned-percussionist-for-marching-band drives me NUTS because he trolls me all the time. And he's going to be leader next year. I feel so bad for the future of my section; I've been leader for all three of his years, he's never had a real 'good' leader. Hopefully he'll get his act together and not completely screw the section over...I doubt it, but still. gonk

Starwolf: Kind of reminds me of the guy who marches bass five. I march bass four, so I basically have to babysit him. Hes a freshman, and he's going to try out for Blue Knights. Now he thinks he's automatically going to make the snareline, and when he comes back, we'll all have to bow down to him.
Prince Yoshimori: Kudos to you. :3 Some freshmen are beasts. My band director, however, goes for experience most of the time.
Noxmad: Judging by what you tell me, I would think it would be you. A section leader needs to be there for their section, and if they're not, then the section doesn't really have a leader, does it?
Mirienne: We kind of did last year. Our drum captain played tenors; we had a center snare; and we had a bass section leader. We didn't really do that this year.
Oh, that would be nice. :3 I know how you feel (even though I'm not in college) ; our football team is powning just about every team they play, so we have about two more halftime performances. Even so, they're not competitions.
Who is Puffer Fish: Haha. I disagree with the sophomore one. xD - is a sophomore -
Ugh. That really sucks! That's what I hope will happen if that tenor player makes section leader.

I actually "was" section leader fro the first time this year. I had to go against 2 freshman and the other sophomore(now two sophomores and te other junior) The only one i really respect myself out of them is the other junior. The sophomore girl has hated me sine i beat ehr in regionals, but me and the junior, after being the only nonn-seniors in the clarinet section our freshman year, have a good respect for eachother that apparently nobody else in the section shares towards me.
My sectionleadership was...horrible. Dring sectionals, i would stat a countoff and people(someof which were the other section lleader auditioners) would start playing over my countoff or start talking, then i would start and they would get mad that i didnt count it off. I'd tell them nicely to be quiet and focus, and first i would get death glares, then they would completely ignore me.
Not to sound conceded, but I was their section leader. Whether they wanted me there or not, i was still the one in charge.
It got to the point where they started having "secret sectionals", of which i found out about thanks to my freshman spy, and would play for a bit then talk about me the rest of the time. Bad things about me. Yet when i was acused of talking about the sophomore girl who tried for sl, i got in big trouble for it. And it was only an untrue accusation. I was sitting necxt to her boyfriend, the assistant drum major, talking to my exband friend about, yes, something that happened in band, and yes, i said her name, but i said nothign bad about anybody but that a bunch of people hadnt shown up to sectionals the day before. Well, dm texted the girl that i was talking badly abotu her to the sax section leader in frontof me, and she got mad and told the teacher, got me in trouble.
Moral of the story is: If people dont have respect for their section leadr, it can go pretty bad. So a section leader ha to be good at their instrument, but liked by the section.

Clarinet Goddess: Dang. That sounds painful. x.x
Honestly, if that tenor player does make drum captain, I'll obey him when I have to, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I can see where you're coming from with the fact that you were the section leader, and you should be respected anyway.

It's the end of the season today (or tomorrow, depending on whether we make finals or not).
And quite frankly, I'm relieved. I LOVE marching band, but I HATE the direction in my band. The band director's a nice guy and a decent trumpet player, but he's not a very good teacher and director. Unfortunately, I'm GLAD to be finally done with marching band (since I'm a senior). Besides my friends, most of the band's immature because they don't want to be in marching band (to be in band at my school, you have to do both marching and concert band).
That's why I think I'm trying out for BDB, so I can still do competitive marching without the hassle of "band logic".

I liked my old section for the most part, except for a new kid who moved into the school after I switched. I adore my new section, though.

At the end of each season, I feel horrible, because I'll have nothing to do for a few weeks until pit band comes along, and because I'll miss the people, especially this year. This year, we have EIGHT saxes leaving D: they're all seniors this year.../: I have no one in my section I despise, though there are some kids in my grade who get annoying. >.<For next year, it's going to suck. Next year is going to be a small section for our saxes, only four altos and three tenors, because we don't know if anyone is coming up from the middle school. My section-mate (whose name is Zach) is going to be section leader, but we decided already that we're doing a co-leader thing, where (near the middle/end of the season) I get to deal with the better players/marchers, and he gets the not so good players/marchers. But it's gonna be rough, my ex is joining again next year, and he's not going to listen to me, not at all. Any suggestions?Oh, and this year, we got second at States (our finals) and it's the first time ever that our school has gotten that high. They always get third (last year we got fourth because the band was filled with kids who only wanted to go to Disney, and didn't really care about band), and this year was amazing for us. I'm scared for next year..../:
