Ever notice how lately people are playing like 5 different instruments today? It always makes me wonder where people find time to practice all of them. Rather than playing 4 different instruments just ok, wouldn't you rather be absolutely amazing at just one instrument??? Why start another instrument when there is so much practicing to be done on the other one? That's just my opinion. What is yours???

Well its good to know how to play many instruments but you should master one first before switching

I agree. But sometimes it is just a craving that people get for other instruments, because they already appreciate music, so they take up that instrument as well.

Also the saying is Jack of all Trades, Master of None. I don't know where you got traits from. Because trades and traits are deffinitly different.

I tried many different instruments but I'm only really good at two, piano and alto sax. The reason I tried so many varies with each instrument:

Trombone: My jazz band only had one trombone, but had 6 saxophones. The director asked me if I would like to try Trombone for the year to help out and I agreed.

Trumpet: 3 trumpets, 10 saxes. Same story as Trombone.

French Horn: "National skip school day." 5 people in band. Nothing to do. One french horn. Sheer boredom.

Hammered Dulcimer: Went to bible camp and we had a music portion of it. I saw the dulcimer and they put me on that for the week.

Irish Tin Whistle: My mother's friend went to Ireland and brought me back this as a present.

Bodhran: Another present from my mom's friend.

Drums: It started out as a joke. My sax was being repaired so I had nothing to play and I told my BD that I'd play drums for the day considering we don't have a drummer. It turned out I didn't do too bad, so they gave me the drumset part for our two Disney songs.

Jack of all traits master of none is an expression. It means that your ok at a lot of things rather than being amazing at 1.

I agree. I know a less-than-stellar clarinetist who's trying to learn sax. I'm not impressed with him but it's his choice.

If you want to learn a ton of instruments and in turn become a 'master' of one, be a percussionist. It somehow works that way for us.

Guess I'm a "Master of None"

I agree that you should master the instrument you play before starting a new one. If you get to a point where you are above your class in skill, first chair without competition and your teacher says you are a good player, its acceptable to try a new one. Once you have mastered that as well, and as long as you still are a master of the first, you can find a new one. If you cant play an instrument well, i dont consider you ebign able to play it.

If you dont like an isntruemtn, then dont continue playing it. its understandable if that is the reason why you are only a master of one.

Me and my friend got to a point in middle school where we were getting bored playing our isntruments because our skill level was above the band. So, we both started learnign and mastering new instruments. i can proudly say that I nearly am i jack of all trades, and master of each and every one. Yes, there are a few that have stopped at a middle school level, becaus ei have not the resources to pick them up again and actually master them. I am currently working on my alto sax skills. I wil probably never master trombone. I did not really enjoy playign it, or see myself ever managing to maste rit because of this fact. No offence to trombone players. I guess it kinda helps i have short arms, so 4th position was torture and above that was near impossible.

I can actually somewhat play like every band instrument, but brass uses different muscles than woodwinds so I'm not really into them since I started on clarinet. I hope to be pretty good at all the woodwinds by the time I graduate xD
Not that I have a whole lot of time to practice. I agree that you should try to master an instrument before adding to your repertoire. As in, in addition to. I don't see why people keep telling me I can't be good at more than one just cuz of their section pride. I learn new instruments to challenge myself, not because the last one was worthless -__- I don't think you should just throw away years of experience. Then again, there's the problem with time, so I only plan to master my favorites. Jack of Many Trades, Master of Some :]

Well, I play bass guitar and various percussion pretty well. I love the ability to be able to play multiple instruments, it's a huge plus when it comes time to record your songs that you wrote. A good example is Lenny Kravitz, he plays nearly ALL the instruments on his albums during recording, very rarely does he have someone else playing. He's really amazing, I would love to be able to play guitar well, then I could record my own album by myself, hahah.

well, i have a lot of friends who play multiple instruments...some a lot more than others...but i'm not sure you have to be a "master", just fairly decent enough so that you won't sound like crap if your director decides to put you on that instrument, i guess...
(oh and i have a specific friend who comes to mind when i hear "jack of all trades" because he plays reg. clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, sousaphone, concert tuba, bari sax, piano, xylophone for a brief time in winter DL, and he almost played bassoon once...whats funny is that his name actually is Jack xd )

In my experience, the only instrument I've ever doubled horn with is piano, and that is because I had been playing piano since I was 4. My piano playing has fallen a lot because I've gotten so serious with horn. I can't imagine myself picking up another instrument and keeping my skills in horn. There's just too much to practice. There's no way I could get in three hours a day on two instruments when I have a hard enough time finding three hours for 1.

I was the exact same way when I tried. I could barely reach 6th.

Well, it's fun to try different things. If you've been playing the same thing for years it's nice to see what else you can do.

The main reason for people learning a lot of different instruments in my band is because we have a lot of optional performances (like for basketball or volleyball) where there will only be 30 or 40 people, and maybe no bass drums or trombones can make it that day. So we need people to cover those instruments.

But our music isn't really that complicated, so it's not as much of an issue as it would be for wind ensemble or orchestra, probably.
