"Oh, my, this isn't completely unsuitable to my needs, not in the least..." Elegancia dropped her new apartment key onto an entryway side-table and inspected all the furnishings in her new pad. How unfortunate that she'd be sharing these living quarter with two girls, and without her precious dachshund, Foochie. He was back at home-- probably sunbathing, or indulging in some dog treats-- and Elegancia missed him already.

She daintily stepped around the pad, looking at the large plush couch and the greenery they had decided to place in the apartment. It was, well... it wasn't bad, but she wouldn't have selected what they put in the place. Elegancia proceeded to head to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and pulled out the bar of Hershey's Chocolate she had ordered to be in there upon her arrival. The brunette looked it over, ripped the wrapper off, and took a rather huge and unladylike chomp out of the bar.

As she made her way to her bedroom, she remembered that she was there first, and as such, got to pick which room was hers. It was fair, since she had paid a premium to get such a swanky pad for herself and two other (school-appointed) roommates for her. Hopefully they realized that not just any streetrat or hoodlum could reside with such a lovely girl as Elegancia. She inspected the room near the kitchen, and decided that it was actually perfect for her-- she needn't check the others.

This one had a brown and pink color scheme to it, and she instantly fell in love. Although they weren't colors she commonly used, she did love the combination, and decided to call it home. She promptly called her butler, Finneas, to gather her things and bring them within the hour-- things had been decided. As soon as Elegancia hung up, she heard the door clicking open-- was it her first roommate?

It was a wonder that the recently graduated Crystal Academy student was able to pack all of her dorm belongings into one large traveling trunk. Granted, this particular piece of transportable furniture wasn't to be taken lightly in size; it was easily more than half the size of the short Costa Rican youth, and nearly twice as wide. Fragments of her clothes flapped against its faded leather upholstery, the trunk itself stuffed to the brims, and had it not been for the wheels that were added in as a Do It Yourself after-thought, it would have been impossible to drag it through Destiny City's public transportation system and then some.

Along with the trunk, Alba came supplied with her usual tote bag, an extra side-slung backpack filled with crafting supplies, and the best outfit she could pick out to impress her new suite-mates. She had been elated to find out that there was still dorming available so late into the summer, and though she had to share the space with two other girls, she was happy to know that she would have her own private room and not have to pay a monthly rent to sleep in it. Surely, nothing could go wrong with this arrangement.

The pair of wheels on her trunk made a clicking noise as she pulled her luggage across the hallway of her new home. She studied each numbered door carefully until the address matched the one scribbled to the side of her left palm in purple permanent marker: suite #15. The door had already been opened and left ever so slightly ajar, a sliver of a crack that one could peer through to peek at the residence inside. Butterflies swelled inside Alba's belly. So far she's had excellent luck in meeting people that weren't intolerable, though that never stopped her from becoming nervous.

She took a deep breath and pushed the door open, dragging her trunk inside and gently closing the door behind her. "Oh!" She gasped, stunned by the view that greeted her. The suite was much larger than she was expecting, and extremely well furnished -- everything looked liked something out of a high-class hotel! (well, in Alba's mind, at least). For a moment she felt that she might have intruded into the wrong dorm, but as it were, there were three rooms available, with one of them already occupied by whom she could only assume was her first roommate.

"Hello?" She called out, slipping out of her shoes before venturing towards Elegancia's room. Alba was not going to be the first to dirty up the pristine carpet, if she could help it.

Just to make sure it wasn't an insane maniac murderer, Elegancia peeked her head out her door and at Alba. Well, she seemed normal enough! Rather pretty and curvy, not someone she'd go out of her way to talk with, but seemed adequate-- much like everything else in the apartment. Elegancia flipped a glossy lock over her shoulder and took a deep breath, turning around the corner with an elegant smile. "Why, hello! I'm Elegancia, your roommate. And what may I call you?" She did a half-curtsy, feeling it strange to do one completely-- would manners be lost on a girl such as her?

The brunette then looked down at her hands, realizing she still had a half-eaten Hershey's bar in one of them. Well, it most definitely wasn't becoming to look like a fat slob, so Elegancia extended the half-eaten chocolate bar to her new roommate. "Would you care for some Hershey's?" Elegancia smiled as affably as she could manage, but wasn't sure if she'd take a mostly-eaten piece of chocolate. As she held the bar out, Elegancia inspected Alba from toes-to-head.

The rather old (Elegancia preferred to call it 'vintage') suitcase was just that-- old, probably needed to be disposed of and replaced-- but it was rather charming. She seemed to have plenty of clothes, a quality Elegancia enjoyed, but she wondered if any of them were worth keeping. Then she looked Alba in the face, and it was then that she realized-- "did you go to Crystal, by any chance?"

Elegancia -- The name had sounded familiar on the notifying dorm e-mail, and it sounded even more so now as she faced her greeter. Alba nearly quirked an eyebrow upwards at the curtsy, as it was usually customary for her to shake someone's hand or give them a hug and a quick peck on the cheek when they met. No, that introduction was very common in the Crystal Academy, particularly amongst the richer girls of the school. It was very rare that anyone ever curtsied for her without any malice behind it; while her parents might have had some extra change to spare, they felt it was necessary that Alba learned the ways of a penny earned and hadn't given her a credit card to spend to her excess. Most of the rich girls in the school didn't want to bother with a foreign exchange semi-poor student, and well. She was getting entirely too ahead of herself on this one. This is past Crystal. Surely, people wouldn't judge you on your wealth in Sovereign Heights.

She gave a wide smile and curtsied in return, as it was the polite thing to do at this point. "My name is Alba Gale Delores," she replied, the name rolling off her tongue in a brighter, clearer accent than her English words, "But you can call me Alba. It's a pleasure!"

An idle hand grabbed the trunk by the top-most handle and wheeled her luggage closer to her new roommate and the rooms that lay behind her. She peered downward to make sure the wheels weren't leaving any marks on the floor, and satisfied, let it settle against her waist as she stood beside Ele. It would seem that she had already claimed the larger space of the three, brightly colored in brown and pink (such strange colors to paint on a dorm! shouldn't the walls all be neutral?).

"That's a lovely room you've got there, I'm surprised by how colorful it is." Alba remarked, and then, "Oh! Thank you very much, I'd love to have a bite." She broke off one of the small and segmented rectangles on the offered bar and nibbled around it, savoring the flavor. "I love chocolate. Especially dark chocolate, the more bitter the better!" She had glanced over to the room next door and noticed that the walls were painted in an up-lifting sky blue with white trim. Before she could investigate any further, however, Ele had dropped the question that had already been bubbling on Alba's mind.

So she did go to Crystal. That would explain her clothes and her formal mannerisms, not to mention why her named sounded so familiar. "Yes, I did, but only for the last year, as I was a transfer student. Decided to stay in Destiny City for a little longer, and here I am! I presume you went too? Your name did sound familiar to me at first, though I apologize if we had any classes together. It had been a tough year."

Elegancia inspected Alba even more as she introduced herself. From her accent, she gathered that she was from some Spanish-speaking country. Honestly, though, she didn't care-- they were all the same to her. Elegancia just decided Alba would be from Costaguatamexirico. She, of course, wouldn't tell this to her face. Lest she had her face pushed into a table by her, like some other Latina she had the displeasure of knowing of. Blech.

"Oh, yes, it is a lovely room, thanks for noticing!" Elegancia waved a hand through the air coyly, as if to say 'oh, you flatter me!' In reality, though, she would have taken compliments for an hour. "It may or may not have been tailored to my needs specifically. I'm not sure." The brunette hadn't thought that Alba would accept the offered chocolate, so she decided to just drop the entirety of the bar in her hands. What kind of a girl accepted chocolate from a stranger? Didn't her parents teach her better? Oh, well.

Her eyes lit up when Alba confirmed that she, too, had attended Crystal. "No, no, I do not believe we had class together either-- but I recall seeing you in the halls once or twice, I believe?" It was a relief! She could rest easy knowing that she was rooming with a fellow Crystal girl. Which meant she had money-- unless she was one of those scholarship girls, which in that case... Well, it didn't matter. Ignorance was bliss, or so they said. Elegancia was about to invite Alba to go find a room, up until she heard a rather monstrous booming getting closer and closer to their swanky pad...

Hopefully it would pass the door and not enter. Hopefully.

"Why couldn't I just stay in my apartment?"

"Ay, m'ja, callate. This place is nice. You keep complaining."

Gloria flipped out her [new] phone and aimed the camera at the door for a picture; she wrinkled her nose, "Um, yeah, because I'm rooming with girls too young to drink."

Her mother gave her The Look just as the phone gave an obnoxious 'cha-chik!. She tried to evade it, punching 'Welcome to hell' into an open text before she sent the photo to Neftali and her brother back home. She slipped the cell into her pocket and re-shouldered her duffel; Markie's head stuck from the top like a morbid trophy kill.

"That's exactly why you're here," her mother said sternly, fishing the key from her own pocket. She thrust it into her daughter's indignant face.

"In my defense, the mock-otov cocktails were Neftali's idea. I didn't think Eugene would actually try to set them on fire." Inserting the key into the door, she unlocked it and body-checked the door open, "The funnn~ has arrived!"

She dropped the body-bag duffel bag next to the door, where it toppled over and rolled until the embroidered logo 'DOS SANTOS GYM' was visible. Gloria parked her rolling travel luggage as her mother edged in behind her, carrying what looked to be a heavy, ceramic crock pot-- she was all warm smiles and crow's feet.

"Que chevere!" she said, whistling. Maribel beamed at the two girls already in the room, homing in on them like a mother-missile ready to launch. They were doomed, so doomed. She walked over with purpose and swooped down on them both with an uncomfortable half-hug (the pot made it difficult) and a firm kiss to their cheeks. Mami could tell Latinas from a mile away!

"Hello! I'm Gloria's mother, Maribel Velez, mucho gusto," she said. "I hope you girls like arroz con pollo y gandules." She lifted the pot as if to win them both over with the promise of free food, and twisted around to shout (even if Gloria was only several feet away): "Gloria! Come meet your roommates!" And as soon as it was out of her mouth, she was off in search of the kitchen.

Gloria was too busy trying to find God in the ceiling, her hands crammed in the massive front pocket of her hoodie that, just like her bag, advertised her father's gym. She had opted to dress down rather than up, considering she was going to move in and then bounce. She really didn't want to stick around and get chummy with these girls; she was well-aware what a person had to do get into these places. Fun company those people did not make. Her messy ponytail swung as she finally looked down and walked over to her new roomies.

She honed in on Alba and smiled immediately, the kind of smile that said: hey, you and I are kinda alike so that means we should be friends. And then.

Well, then she noticed Elegancia.

God karma was a flea-bitten b***h. One mistake, ONE, and she was doomed into trying to make amends for the rest of her life. SOMEONE was submitting to FML.com tonight. Gloria felt like she might as well have swallowed a slice of lime and her lips. Her gaze became guarded, equal parts amused, frustrated, and resigned.

"You're alive." How unfortunate. Gloria had to roll her eyes at herself because while she had a flair for the dramatic, it wasn't as explosive as Elegancia's. Deciding to ignore her following her own words, she thrust her hand out at Alba, obviously not as affectionate as her mother, Latina or not (though she did offer a friendly smile), "Hi, I'm Gloria."

Alba was beginning to get the feeling that her first impression was right on target, though she did her best to push past the thought and give Elegancia a chance. It wouldn't be fair of her to write her off as another self-conceited crystal girl within minutes of meeting her, and besides, she seemed generous enough: after all, she gave her the rest of her chocolate bar after it was learned that she, Alba, enjoyed chocolate immensely. She wasn't sure it was so much she'd eat the rest of the Hershey's on the spot, though, so she thanked her for the offer and closed it away inside her tote bag. It would be considered rude to not accept the kind gesture.

"Tailored to your needs? Surely, Sovereign Heights isn't that luxurious, is it?" Her eyes drifted back to the blue room, wondering if the online personality test doubled up as a future bedroom designer, catered to the student's answers. Alas, the room seemed to be just a beautiful blue room on its own, with large windows to let in light and just enough space for herself and her belongings. She was she she'd be content, tailoring or no.

"Oh, good, I would have felt terrible had that been the case," She said with relief. It was true that she stood out in the busy halls of Crystal; not many sported the kind of tan that Alba was born with. Unfortunately for Ele, she was just another pale-skinned girl in a sea of other pale-skinned girls; her memory didn't jog an epiphany of seeing her in the bathroom, or bumping into her in-between classes.

Luckily, Alba would not have the displeasure of admitting that she hadn't noticed her roommate in the past. The burst of a door and an enthusiastic holler caught her immediate attention, and her heart nearly skipped a beat at the sight. She had yet to meet other Hispanics in her so far year-long stay in Destiny City; she would be lying if she didn't miss her abuelos in Costa Rica, or the way the kitchen smelled of garlic when they cooked almuerzo in the early afternoon.

It was impossible to hide the smile on her face.

Alba was more than happy to reciprocate such a warm greeting. "¡Mucho gusto a conocerté Maribel! Me llamo Alba, y me encanto arroz con pollo." It was like her own abuela was right there with them as Maribel fussed over her daughter's suitemates. It struck a very sentimental chord in Alba, and for that moment, she feverishly wished she could go back to hug her grandmother.

She was so wrapped up in her own nostalgia that she hardly noticed the static in the room between luchadora and heiress. It wasn't until Gloria addressed her personally that she focused her attention back on the present and shook the hand that presented itself, her smile unwavering. "Hi! I'm Alba. It's really great to meet you."

As Maribel busted through the door, smile from ear-to-ear, Elegancia's first thought was, "oh, splendid! The housekeeper is here!" After all, she was latina, and she was old, so what else could she be? Their third roommate? Unlikely! Elegancia was about to demand the maid do something with herself other than smile, but then a certain amazon followed after her. Nay, stomped after her-- it was that man-bodied, ugly and disgusting waitress that Elegancia had the displeasure of meeting several times. She felt compelled to shut the door on her face, but she was too late! Maribel had a grip on Elegancia, and was surely going to throw her out the window!! Oh, what a cruel world!!

Wait. A hug?

Apparently, the apple fell very far from the tree, because Maribel was seemingly on the opposite spectrum of the personality scale from her awful, awful daughter. In fact, Elegancia pitied Maribel. Who would want to have a mannish daughter? Arroz con pollo y gandules-- what kind of martian food was that? Did it have pig's face in it? Cow tongue? "Uhm. Is it uhm. Fattening, mija?" Elegancia emphasized each word as if she were speaking to a five-year-old. Who knew how good her English was? She added the mija in for familiarity-- didn't all latina women call eachother that, or something?

When Gloria bumbled over to the pair, Elegancia almost wanted to take a defensive stance. She had superpowers, and she was not afraid to use them!! "Yes, I'm alive. At the moment, though, I feel as though the stench that just wafted in might change that..." She crossed her arms and curled a glossy lock of hair in her fingers, making sure to keep an eye on Gloria the entire time.

A laugh came from the direction of their kitchen, "Good! Because you girls have enough to last you for a couple of days at least." There was a stretched pause and then: "Unless Gloria gets to it. Anyway, it's not too heavy. I don't think. You could use a little weight on your bones anyway, flaca."

Gloria rolled her eyes, smirking at Alba.

"Same!" She gave Elegancia a bored, full-body sweep before turning back to Alba. "I had to stop Mami from like, going all out. Like, kill-a-pig-and-cook-it-in-the-front-yard out. She did that for an old friend of mine once."

Gloria moved back across the room to pick up her duffel, motioning over her shoulder with her hand as the olive-green bag thumped over her shoulder, "It was kind of a disaster. Girl only ever ate like, pizza so it was super awkward when my mom found out she didn't like tostones and pernil. That's fried plantains and roast pig if you didn't know, gringita."

When she said it, it was accompanied with the sort of head-bob a snake would be proud of, all narrowed eyes and tightly sneering mouth. She made a point to stare at Ele for a second too long before her shoulders came up along with a too-sweet-to-be-real smile, dropping again with a sigh; the unicorn head sticking out of her duffel flopped over. In order to not seem like a total b***h in Alba's company, she offered her a playful grin like she was including her in on a joke. To be honest, she was lucky. Alba definitely evened out the uh, series of unfortunate of events that was Elegancia.

"So how're the rooms? I heard we had a pretty sweet deal here." She bounced on the balls of her feet.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2011 9:07 am

"That sounds delicious!" Alba said of the pig roast, making a point to ignore the sour banter going on between the other two girls. She'd begun to take notice of the uncomfortable heat between them (and really, one would be really dense if they hadn't by now), and thought the better course of action would be to keep herself out of it entirely. She pushed through conversation, hoping that it would at least direct the attention elsewhere. "It's a shame your friend didn't like it, it sounds like it was a marvelous feast. Oh, and tostones! My dad usually makes something pretty similar to that, with honey and brown sugar. It's the best."

With that memory in mind, she grinned. Her father was an excellent cook in her eyes, which was something that she herself could not keep a firm grasp on. Cooking was a strange phenomenon where the results of her endeavors never amounted to her hopes or the recipe's promise of a healthy and delicious meal. To hear that Maribel would be leaving them with ample home-made food was a relief, even though they all had the option of retrieving meals from the cafeteria just a few stairs below them.

"The rooms are kind of amazing, in my opinion." Alba gestured to Elegancia's, which had already been furnished and treated...well, elegantly for her tastes. "Hers is the only one already furnished, but that means we get to pick between these two over here. I think they're so spacious, and the walls are so vibrant! I don't even think apartments are painted in anything other than beige or cream. Is there one you'd prefer? I'm fine with either; both have the same amount of square footage, I think."

Ugh. What was this? Elegancia began to wonder if she had signed up for "Living with Girls with Financial Needs" or something, and was actually going to make it a point of checking later on that day. But for the moment, she had to contend with Alba, who had unreasonably ugly feet (Elegancia thought to make it a rule that she couldn't walk around barefoot-- socks on at all times!), and Gloria, who...well, the girl was supremely man-bodied and most likely insane. Elegancia wouldn't soon forget having her face slammed into a table in front of a bunch of restaurant patrons. Thankfully, the poop-skinned harlot was fired. The manager had come to his senses! He probably didn't want people losing their appetites after seeing the likes of Whoreia.

"As fun as this all sounds," she began, sighing, "I think I'll retire to my quarters early. I'm tired from all the... excitement. I can hardly contain myself. Really." She sauntered off to her room, slamming the door behind herself, and then subsequently pressed her ear against the door to eavesdrop. "What sort of alien-speak are they spouting at eachother?" she asked herself, trying to decipher what all the women of foreign descent were shouting at eachother.

"Oh well," she thought, "they're just jealous. If they bother me, I'll just have to make a reason to get them expelled. Or switched to a different unit. Nobody would bat an eye if I played the victim." Thrusting herself onto her extravagant bed, Elegancia shut the canopy around herself and closed her eyes for some much-deserved beauty sleep.
