Greetings and Salutations everyone,
Divisional Rivals, it's what makes the NFL tick. Some rivalries are young and fierce, others are old and legendary. But every team has another team they consider their biggest rival.
Which begs the question, which rivalries do you think are the biggest and best in each division? Here's what I think.
AFC East- Jets and Patriots: The Rivalry between New York and Boston expands into many different sports, the Yankees and Red Sox in baseball is arguably the biggest in all of sports, and while their football equivelants aren't quite as fierce, it is still a long running rivalry which just shows the hatred these two cities have for each other.
AFC South- Jaguars and Titans: A young division which lacks any true long running rivalries, but the Jaguars and Titans have been going at it back when they both competed in the old AFC Central. And it all climaxed when the Jaguars went 14-2, #1 seed in the AFC, on the verge of a Superbowl apperance, take by the Titans on their home turf, who later lost on the Superbowl to the Rams.
AFC North- Steelers and Ravens: Another young rivalry, but one which goes back a long ways when the Ravens where formally the Cleveland Browns, After moving to Baltimore not only have the Ravens become the only other team in the division which has won a Superbowl, but with two very dominant defenses showcasing these franchises every season, it has become one of the more physical rivalries in the league.
AFC West- Raiders and Broncos: Every team in this division considers the Raiders as their biggest rivals, so which team can be considered the Raiders equal? Has to be the Broncos, 6 Superbowl apperances, 2 championships, they make a good case for being the better of the two teams in the division.
NFC East- Cowboys and Giants: America's team vs. the city which mostly represents America. I think going with the Eagles or Redskins in the Giants place could work, but it seems like when the Giants come to town, there seems to be more at stake on a national level.
NFC South- Falcons and Saints: Buccaneers are the newest team in the divisional fold, and the Panthers too young, the Saints and Falcons have been duking it out since they were both back in the NFC West, though they mostly took a back seat to the 49ers and Rams in those days, now they have emerged as the top dogs in the South.
NFC North- Packers and Bears: The oldest rivalry in the NFL, the Bears and Packers have been fighting each other since the days of the Dinosaurs. The Nick name "The Black and Blue" division came about because of the harsh rivalries between all the teams in it, but the Bears and Packers are the foundation for all of it.
NFC West- 49ers and Rams: Though this rivalry has lost a bit of steam since the Rams moved from LA to St. Louis, it is still an old one which was tops of the old NFC West, and still hold strong in the new one, though the rivalry is running on Nostalgic fumes since those old days, we'll see how the inclusion of the Seahawks and Cardinals effect the rivals here in the seasons to come.
There are many great ones, many divisions where you could go with two completely different teams and it would still be justified that that's the biggest rivalry in the division, but what do you guys think?
