This is a PRP between:
Thel (rapid)

And

Yei (Epine)
PostPosted: Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:37 am

The first leg of his journey had been obvious. Who else would he go to except Yei? The mare he had known ever since he came into the soquili lands. Back then when he had Hotaru (No! He must not think about this! )Yei had been a vivacious scarlet mare with a passion of sorts for life. Thel wondered how the years had treated her and if she was the self same mare he had remembered and subconsciously lifted his hooves higher in the fashion of young stallions.

“Better not do that, it’s slippery here; this mountainous slopes,” said Elan gruffly from the pintabian’s back. Age had given Elan less flight time but more sarcasm than was deemed healthy for the bird. Thel found himself wondering at times about the lifespan of hawks and shuddered at the thought that one day…Elan might be no more.

“I said be careful!” screeched the hawk as the stallion nearly slipped on a loose stone. Blowing loudly through his nostrils, Thel watched as the solitary pebble tumbled down the mountain, dislodging a few unfortunate rubbles on its way down. “That was…close,” murmured Thel quietly as he peered over a ledge.

“You darn right it was! “ said Elan in a reproachful manner . “Honestly, is that mare really all that important? “

“Yei’s…a friend….,” mumbled the stallion quietly. “It’s…only…right,”

“Yeah? Then tell me why did ya left the others behind without a word? Is that right?”

“They…would not…understand…this is….something…I must…do,” said Thel, appearing breathless from the massive amounts of words spoken. “I…I…,”

“Alright, alright, I get you. You wanna say goodbye to your old pal Yei. Let’s get a move on then eh?” replied Elan, not unkindly to his friend. “Cold weather’s a pain in the bones…,”

“Thank you…Elan,”

“Don’t thank me, I still don’t see anyone about,” said the hawk as he flared his wings. “Be right back once I have scouted the area!”

“Al…right,” said Thel, glad for the rest. It had been many hours since the stallion had paused for a break. Fear of the younger herd members finding him was one; the desire to…be free was another.

Folding his legs beneath him on that narrow ledge, the tired stallion rested.

Yei had certainly matured as the seasons had passed, while she may have aged, her passion for life hadn't been quelled and she remained the exhuberant and vavcious creature she had been many years ago. Admittedly, the mare had changed in some respects and could settle when it was required of her. Unsurprisingly, through her own personal experiences and over the course of time she had been granted the prestigious position of Elder amongst her fellow Soquili.

It had been a great honour.

And yet, the mare had chosen to remain isolated in some respects. She appeared only when it was necessary and granted her wisdom to those who needed her aid and comfort. There were other elders in the lowlands and as such, many soquili could turn to them - it was the mountainous soquili who held her heart and heard her words.

As it was, Yei Umeko was nowhere to be seen this morning. This may have been due to her seat of power beind near the very peaks and Elan would be hard pressed to detect her from his vantage point. However, his scouting would pay off as he continued to scope the ground beneath his wings. For in time he would catch sight of a tall and hulking black form, wading it's way without difficulty through the snow. From the air he wouldn't look particularly big, but from the ground it would become clear that the bestial soquili was in fact massive.

Regardless, he certainly appeared to know the lands well if his footing and the pace he traversed the slopes was anything to go by. Perhaps this soquili might be privvy to the details both stallion and hawk required?

Thel watched as the distant figure of Elan circled the high mountains. Despite the hawk’s age, Elan still had sharp eyes and good coordination. A subtle shift of a wing here, a slight flaring of the tail there and the hawk was seen flying almost effortless across the wide chasms. Feeling slightly envious of his winged friend, Thel flicked his tail idly while he waited.

The mountain tops were being very sullen today. Elan could hardly find a single living thing about let alone a soquili. Swooping across a particularly narrow valley, the hawked flapped his wings a couple of times before emerging through the other side. There! There was someone there after all!

Giving a delighted cry, the brown hawk zoomed in on that singular being. Even from a distance it was obvious that that form was that of a horse plodding though the deep mountainous snow; giving it the impression of a formidable snow plough of sorts.

Alighting onto a withered snow covered branch, the hawk folded his wings and gave the stallion before him a critical look. Elan had known that black was often a deceiving colour but had not expected to be deceived this much. Why, this stallion was perfectly massive and the only reason his hoof beats were not heard was probably because of the thick snow. Wellm whatever. Perhaps this bulky thing would know something about Yei.

“Hey you!” screeched the red hawk in his typical haughty manner. “You seen a red mare about? Long hair, weird sense of humour?”

Oh lord, if there was one thing the stallion hated it was arrogance - that being said he hadn't the patience to chastise the bird. To be frank, the tall stallion didn't have the time either. He would let other soquili within the herd with significantly less responsibility take up that challenge. Instead, the ebony male afforded a level of patience that one could only expect from one accustomed to dealing with a great many personalities...including the problematic ones. It was only when he had ensured his expression was neutral and unprovocative that he replied to the query.

Unfortunately, the answer probably wasn't what Elan would have liked.

"Which one?" the stallion replaced softly. He spoke at a volume that was enough to be heard over the soft breeze, but certainly made no effort to make himself more audible beyond that. On the contrary, his raises voices were reserved for the battlefield, the warzone or for shouting orders across vast distances. He had no intention of exhausting his own voice for no reason other than he could!

"There are quite a few autumn females in these parts, and a 'weird sense of humour' would arguably be considered a quirk native to these parts," he further explained his response in the hope that it would make his query more logical. Even he could appreciate that a blunt remark to begin with could be offensive, even if this wasn't the intention.

Elan cocked his head a little at the other’s reply. For one with such a large mass, the stallion sure talked softly. Perhaps the poor soquili had a sore throat or something. Stretching his wings languidly before folding them back, the red hawk uttered a sort of screechy laugh. “That so? Well, this particular mare should be pretty old by now. Heh, wouldn’t be surprised if she has a couple o’grandkids of her own by now on account of of time since we had last met. The mare I’m talking about would be Yei. You know her?” Once again the red hawk cocked its head to one side as it eyed the stallion with his sharp and arrogant gaze, the kind of gaze only possessed by creatures born with the confidence that they were the hunters and not the hunted.

“Nothin personal but there’s that friend o’mine who wants to meet her. We go waay back,” added the hawk after a while. “Only…this mountain…it’s too steep, see? And he’s not the young stallion he used to be yer know? Heh, none of us are if it comes to that,” said the hawk with a cynical laugh. “Neeways, the wind’s freezing my tail feathers and I’d appreciate it if you do know of her whereabouts. Elan’s my name by the way,”

'Old' wasn't really a description that Sylph Forcas associated with the mare - age had treated her kindly and she was as vivacious as any young debutante. Age had slowed her down as much as some other elder soquili and she seemed to be of the opinion that maturity and the continuing years would not drag her down. She wasn't one to lie in a bed, covered up to the chin by her duet waiting for death to take her - on the contrary, the mare seemed determined to be the bane of his existence and a ray of sunshine in everyone else's lives. It wasn't that he disliked the mare, he considered her to be very intelligent when she needed to be, but some of her views...they just exasperated him.

"You speak of the alpha of these lands," Sylph confirmed. He wouldn't be riled by the old bird, let the hawk assume he could be sarcastic as though old age dictated such a quality. "Yei Umeko is indeed an individual I have seen recently," he continued in a low murmur, swivelling his ears as he listened to the hawk's explanation for his existence in this particular territory and the companion that he brought with him. It was a spontaneous visit by the sound of things, completely unprepared and as consequence, not one that the stallion would have been forewarned about.

...With the exception of sarcasm, the hawk seemed harmless and Sylph could assume that the companion he brought was as well.

"If you seek the most convenient way to the peaks then you had best recall your companion and follow me. You have chosen a most unforgiving season to visit the slopes, but there are still some paths that are accessible," he mused. He refrained from providing his name to the hawk, it wasn't a detail he suspected the bird would care for, but if he should be curious then no doubt Yei would bestow that information upon him.

Elan could not hide his surprise when the stallion called Yei the ‘alpha’. What? Had time really moved on that fast? The Yei that used to be so carefree and teasingly flirtatious (if only to drive Thel into a corner) had moved on to be an alpha? True, Yei was all that and more. The red mare had a certain underlying quality that made her someone you could talk to and seek advice from when needed but the hawk still found this bit of information rather surprising and not with a hint of envy. Thel had done nothing these past few years except… to retreat into himself even more, taking more time to answer questions directed at him and in short… cut himself off verbally from most. What reason the stallion had in meeting Yei was still lost to the hawk but Elan wasn’t Elan if he couldn’t bounce back twice as fast.

“Heh, doesn’t sound much like the Yei I used to know,” sniffed the hawk ungraciously. “But if that’s the only lead we have…”

Flaring his wings, the red hawk took off the snow covered branch and circled around the large stallion a couple of times. “Don’t move , y’hear? I’ll get Thel over as soon as I can,”

--------------------------

Thel was thankful that the strong winds of the mountains weren’t blowing that day and stomped his hooves occasionally to keep the blood moving. Elan was taking a rather long time and the stallion wondered if perhaps his friend had been waylaid by a rabbit or some such prey. It wasn’t unusual for Elan to do that but the stallion flattened his ears all the same. As long as the hawk did not come back bringing a dead rabbit… Thel guessed he could grudgingly forgive his friend for the lateness.

A small but gradually enlarging speck in the air told the stallion of Elan’s return and Thel eagerly lifted his head in the hawk’s direction. “Well…?” said Thel once the hawk had landed on a stony outcrop. “Have you…seen Yei?”

“Nope, but I met a stallion who has,” said the hawk smugly. “He says that he’s able to show us the way if you’d meet him,”

“Alright…,” sighed Thel as the shook the snow out of his mane. “Lead me…to him,”

The stallion wasn't accustomed to being ordered around by others. This was a particularly unusual occurance due to the fact that the one issuing the orders wasn't even a soquili! Elan would probably be the first and last hawk to be granted such permission, the next one was liable to be crushed beneath his hooves. He was a meat eater but he rarely ate the warm blooded sort, favouring the more artistic and skilled form of hunting - in short, he preferred fishing. Nevertheless, he wasn't adversed to squishing something and leaving for a scavenger if they really ticked him off.

Fortunately for the hawk, the stallion had had sufficient sleep the evening before and as a consequence his mood was tempered. His patience and tolerance renewed by a solid eight hours - if he'd been surviving on the two hours that he was typically known for then things might have been awkward. Thus, the stallion kept his peace and remained where he was despite the exposure to the extremes. It was certainly cold out here but an individual could be thankful for small favours, he had an exceptionally thick coat and the bite of the cold had to work harder to penetrate it.

Heaving a sigh, he flicked his amber gaze towards the direction the hawk had flown in and waited expectantly for the arrival of the esteemed Thel. He hadn't met the stallion, had barely heard of him but he was vaguely familiar with the name - it was probably mentioned to him in passing and in the depths of his mind it remained. Who would have thought that a tidbit of passing hearsay would actually prove to be useful?

...He had a renewed respect for the rumour and gossip mills in these moments.
