Vance had been out and about most of the day. He'd been adventuring through the brush, scouting by the beach, and window shopping downtown. It was a usual day for the boy with a strong wanderlust. His new brother Vahn was off elsewhere. He was assigned to keep an eye on the Vance, but Vahn had such a good sense of hearing and smell, that as long as he stayed in the general area, he could find him quickly.
Now the boy was laying down on the warm grass near the street. He had a bag of Skittles on his belly, that he was occasionally taking small handfuls from while staring at the clouds.
He chewed on another Skittle while he daydreamed, but was quickly broken from his thoughts when the juices from his candy went down his throat before he was ready. He sat up quickly, coughing and hacking, his bag that had been on his belly slid off onto the ground.

Lilah had been allowed to leave the house without Maggie, as long as she didn't go to far. The little girl didn't plan to go very far anyway. They were just down the road from a nice grassy area, so she was heading towards that. Their backyard had lots of grass and her treehouse, but she was getting stircrazy, Maggie had called it "cabin fever".
As she got down the road, she noticed a familiar green head laying in the grass. Hey! That was Vance!
Ooooh, and he had candy!
She crouched down and started to creep up on him, intent on both pouncing him and swiping his candy at the same time. Lilah got closer and closer, then:
"HA-AGGHH!"
Just as she had pounced, he had sat up, coughing on his candy, but more importantly, FAR to tall to be Vance! It was too late, she was already falling on him, her arms outstretched to hug him around his shoulders.

Vance was startled so much by Lilah's yelp, that Vance managed to clear his throat from the wickedness of the Skittle-Juices. His head turned as a falling Lilah tackled him. "Woah!" His arms caught the girl that had stumbled onto him, unaware she had intended to scare him at all.
But wait; this girl was familiar. He had met her twice, and once in a dream. "Lilah! Hi~." He greeted, still holding the girl. Why let go? It was like he was giving her a greeting hug he would have done anyway! Oh no! His Skittles, where had they gone? Vance semi released the girl to look on his lap. No candy. Did they fall? He directed his attention to the fallen bag of sweets on the grass between them. It would seem a few fell out of the bag. "Ooops~." They were still good.

Lilah had started to jump up, beginning to apologize to the stranger...Until she heard her name. How did he...?
The little girl took a second look, now kneeling next to him, her body on one side, and her hand supporting her on the other side of Vance, so that she was still somewhat on him.
"Oh...huh." She reached her other hand, measuring where he was last time, then reaching it up to where he was now.
"You look...funny," she concluded, staring him in his red eyes. Those were definitely Vance-eyes.

Vance's happy demeanor faded as he watched Lilah. Did she not recognize him? How heartbreaking! He whimpered a bit, staring back at Lilah. "Funny?" How did he look funny? Was there candy on his face? Was he looking at her weird? What was wrong?!
It was then that her hand gestures really clicked. That was right. They hadn't seen each other since Vance was a toddler. "No, Lilah... It's me, Vance! I got bigger! It's me I swear!" He pleaded frantically. Girls weren't the only people who could get big! He could too. "I was grounded, but then I was big! But I was still grounded until Dad said I wasn't." Vance assumed this would explain things, nodding knowingly with a confident expression.

Lilah nodded, making the hand gestures again. "Yeah! Funny!" Apparently 'funny' meant 'taller' to her. What an odd girl. She realized she was still half sitting on him, and made a face, sitting back quickly.
"Oh! Sorry!" she said.
She listened understandingly. Obviously growing while one was grounded didn't make you ungrounded, of course!
"Oh, ok." She said, smiling. So. Vance wasn't little anymore. Her eyes widened.
"Can you read now??" She asked excitedly.

Vance was glad she understood, and glad that she wasn't sitting on him anymore. Or half sitting. Either or. He wasn't a chair. "Of course I can!" He said defiantly. "I read all the time!" Like candy wrappers and... no no he read books too. So yes, Vance was no longer a dependent toddler in need of being read to. He could read fairly well.
"I even have to read stuff for my brother. But he came from a book. Isn't that weird?" Wouldn't a teen from a book know how to read? It may have been that Vahn was just lazy, or maybe he really didn't know how. He showed no signs of initiative anyway. "My brother is new! I just got him!" He said, as if speaking about a new toy. "But he's older than me. I dunno how that is supposed to work.."
Oh no! He had gone on about himself, but what of Lilah? How rude. "What's up, Lilah? What're you up to?"

"You have a new brother that came from a book?" Lilah was intrigued. "Maggie said I came from sparkly glass shoes, but that they reminded her of a book she had read." The child thought for a moment. "Who wears glass shoes??"
Lilah thought that coming from a book might not necessarily mean he could read, but she agreed it sounded odd. "Maybe you should teach him!" she exclaimed. Lilah could help too! Everyone should know how to read, because there were such cool things to read out there!
"Oh, I was just getting out of the house. Maggie said I'd been couped up too long and should go out and get fresh air, so I did!" A light seemed to click on in her head, as she remembered why she had been in the house for the entire day before.
"OH! I was writing a book. It's for you, but I don't have it now, 'cuz I didn't think I'd see you yet."

"Yeah! A book about werewolves. I Guess that's why he looks like one." An astounding conclusion Vance came to all on his own. Amazing, right? His cleverness was bar none. Then again, if Lilah came from glass shoes, Vance thought for a moment if chance passed her a lucky break by not making her a glass person. Goodness, imagine how short a life a girl would have if the smallest tumble would shatter her little frame? "Iunno. Dumb people?" Honestly, glass shoes? It did seem silly.
"I'm tryyying but he looks at me like I'm stupid when I do." Vahn's everlasting cynicism held it's ground against a pouting Vance it seemed, as the wolf boy came across looks like that often.
Vance's eyes went wide with surprise, a delighted grin spreading over his face. "For me?! What's it about?"

"Oooo, he looks like a werewolf?? Does he always look like a werewolf? Or does he look like a person sometimes? And does he howl at the moon?" Lilah had read a couple of werewolf books. She wondered if he was afraid of silver too....
"You should tell him he looks dumb when he can't read, if he looks at you like you're stupid!" Lilah said. EVERYone should read! That's just how it was supposed to go!
Lilah clapped her hands and bounced. "It was about..." she paused, trying to build up tension. "CANDY!"

Vance eagerly explained his brother's appearance to Lilah, describing his matted fur tail, his dog like ears, his angry grey and gold flecked eyes. "He's also tall! Taller than my Daddy!" He said this as if it were a very big deal, since Vance was so short, most people seemed extraordinarily tall to him. It would seem his Dad was the tallest, according to his simple mind.
Vance clasped his hands over his mouth at Lilah's suggestion. Be mean to his brother?! "I can't call him dumb! He's older than me... wait.." Vance crossed his arms. "But... he was born after me.. but he's older... but... RAAAGH!" He ruffled his hair in aggravation. "Makes no sense!"
Vance settled down enough to lean in as Lilah built up tension, about to reveal the plot of the story. "Candy!" He repeated back, his arms raised high. "Awesome! I can't wait to read it!"
