Half way through the season, Now is the time when the contenders start to distance themselves from the pretenders. Some teams are looking good, others are anything but.
1. Wade Phillips Fired- I knew Phillips was going to get fired, but I thought he would have been safe till the end of the season for that. But Sunday night after a horrific 45-7 massacre in Green Bay Jerry Jones finally pulled the plug. With Phillips gone and Romo sidelined til December, the Cowboys have given up on this year, and with their new Intern head coach, Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett taking over, the Cowboys will be seeing if he has what it takes to potentially win the official head coaching job by the end of the season, it also means that for the rest of the year we will be seeing the Cowboys play more of their back ups and younger players in attempting to prepare for next season. So Phillips is the first coach to be axed this year, many speculate that Brad Childress of the Minnesota Vikings will be right behind him, but with an impressive come from behind victory yesterday against Arizona, the Vikings season, and Childress's job will be safe, for at least one more week.
2. Stafford and Lions cannot catch a break- After coming off an impressive victory over Washington, and leading the Jets 20-10 in the 4th quarter yesterday, it seemed like the Detroit Lions were finally about to turn the corner. But poor Mathew Stafford suffered his third shoulder injury, and the Lions blew the lead and lost in overtime. Stafford may not have proven that he is true starting QB material, but he has so much potential and could actually be thee QB for the Lions in the future, if he can stay healthy. The Lions even at 2-6 have outscored their opponents this season 203-188, and could have a much better record than they do now if it weren't for unfortunate circumstances. This team has the nucleus for a potential playoff contending team in the NFC, they are just a few puzzle pieces away from breaking out. But if Stafford cannot stay healthy, I don't see the Lions meeting that potential anytime soon.
3. More games in London, expansion team next?- Due to a wild Halloween and being without the internet or TV for last weekends games I wasn't able to talk about this last week when it happened, so I will bring it up now. After another sell out game in Wimbley Stadium, the NFL announced the will have another game in London next year. They also hinted at the possibility of having multiple games in London, maybe have a Superbowl there, and maybe even expanding the NFL to England and eventually place an expansion team there. I enjoy having NFL games outside the country and sharing them with the rest of the world, but thoughts of placing a franchise in England, or even having a Superbowl there is going a little beyond for me. Europe does have a fascination with American Sports, especially Football since it is foreign to them, but the NFL would not work there for 8 home games a year, we've tried NFL Europe once before, it didn't work. The one game in England a year works as a one time extraveganza, but try and push beyond that, thinkin the NFL would survive there I think is absurd. I think an NFL franchise would thrive in Toronto, lets start in Canada first, the NBA, NHL, and MLB have franchises in Canada, I think a franchise *Cough* Buffalo Bills *Cough* would do well there. And as for thoughts of the Superbowl in London? I think having the Pro Bowl played there would be a better option. Many people have complained in the past that games played in England have been dud games between dud teams. If your not going to have the Pro bowl in Hawaii any more, I think England would be a great alternative location. And we would be showcasing the top players from around the league for our British friends. So if there are British fans of the NFL, (I met a man from England who was a huge fan of the Steelers) This gives them all a chance to see the best players from their favorite teams every year come and play for them.
SHOUT OUT PLAYERS!
Colt McCoy (Cleveland Browns)- In his first three games he played against Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady, three Quarterbacks and teams who are responsible for 6 Superbowl championships this decade. And he emerged from these games 2-1, He may not have the great stats of a starting QB, but he's getting the impressive wins against top teams. Very good for a Rookie.
Peyton Hillis (Cleveland Browns)- When we think of great running backs in the NFL, no one would consider Hillis, who was traded to Cleveland from Denver, but Peyton yesterday on 29 carries had 189 yards and 2 touchdowns. And against the team with the best record in the NFL, that is very impressive.

Darnit Brett Farve, you saved your coach's job. Oh well next week is always better.
Anyways it was a very good the NFC west. Seeing the 49ers and Rams not playing could have helped a little.

This week we saw the Cardinals fall to the Vikings in OT to put them just 1 game ahead of San Francisco, and the Seahawks loss to the Giants will keep them only 2 games ahead, Hopefully next weeks win over the surprisingly good Rams will undoubtedly get us back into serious contention for the NFC west. I hope Troy Smith can continue performing like he did against the Broncos in the 4th quarter of that game.
