This meeting is for Kalinka Kovak, and will be overseen by Zakaria Arrington and Nigel Price.
Location: Zak's basement laboratory.

"Let's try this again." Zak said, tapping the now enchanted vial before he set it down in it's respective place on the floor. "And this time, make sure the coolant keeps the heat down. We don't need anything melting, magical or otherwise." He was sure it would work, this time. So sure. It had to work. Otherwise, he was wrong. And he, Zakaria Arrington, was never, ever wrong.
Ever.
If this didn't work, then clearly it was Nigel's fault.

This is what he focused on as he stepped once more into the circle, brushing hair from his face, careful not to smudge the sigils traced there. Across the room, he watched his apprentice washing the paint off of her fingers, briefly remembering the feel of them slipping across his chest, around his back, on his neck. He shook his head, banishing the distraction, and stared at the center of the circle. It flared up in light, and once more, the ritual started.

Going through the motions as they had planned them, Zak pulled as much magic as he could muster from within himself, his fingertips turning black from the over use.

He only hoped Nigel would do his part.

"Got it." Nigel knew exactly what his role was in this, and he had no doubts in his abilities to fulfill it. This time, he was to keep an eye on the machines as well as help Zak with the magic that they'd need in order to complete the spell. This was easily done with another charm that Nigel had prepared the day before, which would allow him to keep track of how high the temperature rose, should the coolant not work. They'd been preparing this since their last attempt a week ago - with any luck, it would be a success. "The adjustments I've made should ensure that won't happen again." Which meant that they were ready.

So, the ritual began. Magic was poured into it, strengthening it. Nigel's eyes glanced to the vials, which were clearly being affected by the spell that was being performed; already, he could see them beginning to glow with an ethereal light, looking almost as though they were pulsating with magic. It was working! The vials were taking to it!

Unlike the previous time, there was no explosion - instead, the room merely filled with a bright light. The redheaded mage found that he needed to shut his eyes in order to withstand it, and even then he could still see the orange glow from behind his eyelids. It eventually faded though, leaving the vials and the remnants of the circle behind. Already knowing that Zak probably wouldn't have the strength to go look himself, Nigel hurried over to one of the vials to examine it. It had to have worked this time - it had too!

Nothing happened when he lifted one of the vials. No reaction, just like the last batch. "Wha...but we did it PERFECTLY this time!" Again, they felt like the vials from before - there was life, stirring inside them. And yet...they felt different from the last batch. "What is this...?" Something about this vial was different from the one that Shade had come out of.

But it still wasn't what he and Zak had been trying for.

It had to work. Nothing had gone wrong.
The world was swimming around his head, and he was standing up from pure stubborn will. He felt faint. Sick to his stomach. His fingers were burning, and he felt as if he had just run a mile. His lungs were burning.
It had to work. He just had to stand long enough for Nigel to confirm-

Something was wrong. Nigel wasn't cheering. Stumbling, he turned, nearly falling and the urge to throw up rising in the back of his throat. He pushed it away, gaping. Nigel looked...pissed? He wasn't sure. He couldn't really see. Everything was blurry...

But he understood one thing. It hadn't worked. Whatever they had done this time, it still wasn't what they had intended.
"N-not...poss..." His words were slurred, and he lurched, gripping one of the machines to keep himself up. White knuckled, his arm that was holding him up was shaking, black halfway up his forearm. The one that hung at his side was much the same, and there were dark, raccoon like spots around his eyes.

He wanted to say more. Wanted to rant more. But he couldn't. Instead, his eyes rolled up into the back of his head, and he fell to the floor, unable to keep himself awake any longer.

Something was wrong with Zak.
Kali knew before the sharp, tingling sensation flared in her neck, around the choker that she wore. Choker, she scoffed, dropping the book she had been putting on the shelf. More like a collar.
Regardless, something was obviously wrong with her master. He was using magic, and a lot of it. So much, that he had begun to reach out to her reserves, conscious or not. He was such an a**! He knew she could pass out if he did that! She had, before!

But, these thoughts didn't stop her as she rushed from the library, flying down the hall and throwing the door to the basement open. Light was filling the room, blinding her for a second. She yelped and tripped over her own feet, lurching down the steps. Halfway down, she managed to catch herself, though not before she hit every step before that. Hanging off of the railing, she shook her head, rubbing her eyes to clear them from the residual spots.

"Wha...but we did it PERFECTLY this time!" She heard Nigel exclaim; she hurried down the last of the steps as she heard Zak sputtering after this proclamation, stumbling around in the circle that he had recreated.

"Not...poss...." He croaked, his voice a hoarse whisper. She saw his knees buckling, and dove. Zak went crashing down to the floor; right into his apprentice's waiting arms. He was heavier than she had thought he would be. He didn't eat much, but he weighed a ton!

"What did you DO?!" She snapped, whirling on Nigel as soon as she was steady. Glancing down, she saw the black skin that Zak sported, and nearly choked on her own breath. "Look at this! ********! Look what you did! It's just about to his elbows, damn it! I'm surprised he's not dead!!!" For someone who said she hated Zak as much as she did, she certainly was worried about him.

The red head whirled on Nigel again, struggling to drag her Master to his feet, most of his lean form slung over her shoulders.
"Well? What did you make this time??" She spat, grunting. "Was it worth it? Because now I have to deal with his bitchy a**!"

Nigel's head swiveled as he heard Zak collapse behind him, and he looked just in time to see Kali catch her master. It was quite clear that Zak had exhausted himself, and the redheaded mage saw that his partner's apprentice was true - it really was some kind of miracle that Zakaria wasn't dead.

"Your master was fully aware of what he was doing." Nigel said evenly, frowning at the angry girl. "I didn't force him to do anything." He put the vial that he was holding into his pocket and moved over to the younger magic user, intending to help her bring the blond mage upstairs. "Let me see him; I'll have an easier time carrying him." Which was true - Nigel was, after all, much taller than Kali was. As he drew closer to the redheaded apprentice, Nigel swore that he could feel the vial in his breastpocket...pulsating. Reaching out. Much like Shade's vial had with Megg. A thought crossed his mind, but she pushed it aside for now - he could check his theory once Zak was safely in his room and being tended to.

Without waiting for a reply, Nigel took Zak from the young woman's shoulders, lifting him up with ease thanks to a bit of magic of his own. "Lets get him upstairs." There wasn't much that they could do, other than give him potions and make sure that the blond mage got rest. Hopefully, he'd be able to sleep this off after that. "Fetch some potions for him - I'll make sure that he's alright upstairs." With that, the redheaded mage hurried Zak up to his chambers, promptly sticking him in bed. Needless to say, it would be a while before they made anymore attempts...

However, he still needed to test something. After putting Zak to bed, Nigel pulled the vial out of his pocket and stared at it. Again, this one was looking for someone...and he could tell who that someone was. He just needed to wait for Kali to come back...

Kali stubbornly refused to admit that Nigel would be able to carry Zak better than her because he was taller than she was. Instead, she decided it was just because he was secretly Zak's gay lover and wanted to touch him. Yup. That was so why.
She didn't disclose this information and let Nigel take Zak, nodding. She was used to orders. Not that she had to obey anything that Nigel said, like she did with Zak, but he was talking sense. Unlike Zak.
She hurried to the other side of the room, rummaging through some shelves to no avail. She couldn't find the bright blue bottle that would help Zak. So, she was forced to go on a wild goose chase through the house. That damn man. He was so unorganized. Not that she was much better, but at least her chaos was planned. She knew where stuff was.

Eventually, she found the bottle, wedged between a stone lion and something she really wasn't sure if she wanted to know what it was in Zak's study. Shuddering, although giving a triumphant 'ha!', she hurried to Zak's room.

It was the largest room in the mansion, with an adjoined study and washroom of its' own. Scrolls and books and various magical items were strewn about the table of the study; surprisingly, the only messy place in the room.
Zak lay in his bed, still clothed, thank god. She walked over to the bedside table and set the bottle down, pouring some into a cup. This she carefully poured into Zak's mouth, making sure he swallowed it all.

"The first time I fed this to him he was awake." She muttered at Nigel. "And he thought it would be funny to make a joke that it had to be administered mouth to mouth. He nearly choked when I took him seriously. a*****e." Again, despite her words, there was a look in her eyes that was unmistakably worried. She sighed, and turned away from Zak to look at Nigel.

"So? What did you make /this/ time?"

Nigel look up from the vial that he'd been examining when Kali came in with the blue potion for Zak. Despite the situation, the redhead couldn't help but chuckle a little at her story - that definitely sounded like something that Zak would do. "I'm sure that you weren't pleased when you found out the truth." That didn't change the fact that it was pretty funny, however.

"I'm not sure." The response was fairly honest, really. "But I think I know how to find out." Nigel waited for Kali to finish administering the potion to Zak before moving directly next to her. He then thrust the vial into the one of her hands that wasn't holding the potion bottle, wondering what would come out of the vial when it came into contact with Kali. It was reaching out to her, just as Shade's vial had with Megg. If he was assuming correctly, then something much like the impling child would emerge.

With any luck, it would be equally as friendly.

Kali was in the midst of setting the potion bottle down when suddenly a small green vial was thrust into her grasp. She yelped, fumbling with it as it began to glow, dropping it with a small shriek. When it hit the floor, however, it didn't smash. It exploded into a vibrant white light, rolling over to Nigel's foot. The light expanded, then faded...

Into a small, grey skinned baby. There was a flop of messy, bright green hair on it's head, and it had a mouth full of extremely large teeth. It squirmed, it's long tail twisting around it's body, the brightgreen tuft of fur at the end drawing Kali's eye. Then, it took a breath, and as opposed to crying...it clamped down on Nigel's ankle.

It was a baby. And it was biting Nigel. It was a baby, from a vial, with a TAIL, and it was biting Nigel.

"Holy s**t!" Kali exclaimed, rushing forward and prying the baby off of Nigel's ankle. "What is...what IS this??!" She asked, eyes wide. "How did it...where did it...what???!" She was so very, very confused.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:36 pm

Nigel had been expecting almost all of this - the small explosion, the bright light, even the baby appearing. That was what had happened with Megg and Shade, after all. However, what he hadn't been expecting was for the baby to latch onto his ankle.

With a set of very, very sharp teeth. The redheaded mage wouldn't have been able to bite back his cry of pain if he'd tried, and he found himself trying to shake the little creature from his body, not particularly enjoying the feeling of sharp teeth piercing his skin. Needless to say, he was quite relieved when Kali pried the little creature loose, allowing him to bend down so as to clutch at the bleeding wound. Blue eyes turned to look at the baby, and he scowled slightly.

"THAT would be one of the creatures that your master and I managed to make this time." he hissed from between clenched teeth. "However, it would seem that these ones are significantly less pleasant than those of the last batch!" He didn't know that for certain, honestly, but he wasn't exactly pleased with the fact that the small creature had bitten him. Nasty little thing! Nigel was almost tempted to kick it, baby or not! "He seems to like you, though."

The creature did seem to like her, it was true. He cooed and cuddled right up to her, clutching at the long strands of her hair that spilled over her shoulders. She blinked, and couldn't help but smile. He was...cute, in his own way...

"Aw, he's harmless. He only bit you because he was scared. Isn't that right?" She cooed and rubbed her nose against the little fellow's. He giggled, and patted at her cheeks. He didn't seem to be the same as a newborn baby would have been. He was more aware than that. But, he was unmistakably an infant.
And Kali did love babies.

"He's chosen me, hasn't he?" She asked, looking over at Nigel as she calmed the baby by rocking him in her arms. "Like the last one chose Megg." She had gathered, by now, how these things worked. And she knew that she didn't have a choice if it had. The alternative was killing it; and she had no wish to do that. Besides. He really was adorable, in his own monstrous sort of way.

"Scared. Sure." Nigel wasn't so sure about that - the little creature certainly didn't LOOK as though he were at all frightened. He looked just dandy, really. It was probably evil incarnate, for all he knew, and the thing was just biding its time until it got another chance to take a chomp out of him. Yes, the redhead decided, that was probably it exactly.

"That's probably it, yes." The redheaded mage nodded a bit, still eyeing the strange baby. "It would probably be best if he were kept with you as often as possible." That was what they'd been doing with Megg and Shade - it would probably be best to keep an eye on this one as well. They would probably learn a fair bit if they observed this one, as well as Shade. "It might be beneficial for you to talk with Megg a bit as well - perhaps she could give you a few pointers." Obviously, the two creatures weren't EXACTLY the same, but Megg could surely at least give Kali SOME advice as to how to look after her new, little...thing. "We'll need to discuss it with Zak when he wakes as well."

"He's just a baby. How hard could caring for him be?" She was sure she could manage. But, she would talk to Megg anyways. She'd been intending to, even before the babies came, but Zak had kept her busy. Now? He was unconscious, and had no choice anyways!
She was positively gleeful as she cuddled her baby. Sure, it was one more thing that Zak had loaded onto her; and verily, she would b***h about it later. But for now?
It was cute. And it got her out of work.

"I think I'll go do that now..." She said, smiling."You'll take care of Zak, won't you Nigel? Oh. And by the way..." she paused, halfway out of the room. "If I'm keeping this thing? Zak is having nothing to do with it." He could not, would not, be trusted with children. He was a bad, bad guardian.
