Okay I have an issue, I can't feel the gears out all too well. I can't tell if i am going from first to 2nd or if i messed up and went into 4th. or if i am going from 3rd to 4th or 3rd to 2nd.
I swear im the only one who can't feel for the gears. This worries me because in my brothers m3 i have to do everything slow just to make sure I don't go into reverse and hit something since reverse is right next to first gear.
My friends dont have a problem distinguishing gears and my brother keeps telling me i should notice some kind of feeling before i select the gear. I can kinda tell what he means with that slight change in motion but its usually too late to notice or too minor.
Can I get some tips?

neutral Should be something seperating the space for each gear. And the knob is usually numbered.
1 3 5 | | | ------- | | | | 2 4 6 R
Like from first to second, you should know is just straight down, dude. Third is slightly to the right of first, it'll feel like its in the middle row... cuz it is. Fourth is straight down from third, 5th is all the way top right corner, and if it's a 6 speed, six is straight down.

Don't shoot morphine before you drive, you should be able to feel things a little better xd
By the way, did you get the Civic yet?

i've found that with a typical h pattern (and return springs that actually work) i can push to the left for 1 and 2, let it center itself for 3 and 4, and push up and right for 5

@Tadpole: hmm, well that should solve my problem with 3rd and 4th
@joey: The first time i ever drove stick i was 14, but i never really get to drive it often so when i finally get into it, I try to improve quickly. I'd say I've driven stick about 5-6 times with year intervals between each. I stopped stalling one my second experience

You could always learn the way my dad taught me, take the car and go out to an abandoned area, my case a geo tracker and an old strip mining area. And just drive till you get the hang of it, It took me an entire day but if someone as think headed as me can get it lol. I took a job a few monthes later and was driving stick shift dump trucks daily.

i wanted too but my brother barely lets me drive much less far enough to find a vacant area. The one spot I knew that was always vacant is now occupied but what I want to find is a hill so i can learn to balance the clutch and the gas up hill.

For what? Tsuki, are you getting ahead of yourself again? Basics, man, learn the basics and learn them well before you take off and try something a step up from your level. You can't even find the gears, how do you expect to balance anything?

You just need to relax, I got it through practice, start off taking it slow, foot off gas, clutch in, slide into neutral, slide up / down into gear, foot off clutch, foot on gas.
It took me like 2 months to go from slow and steady to snatching the gears, and im still occassionally bouncing it off fourth because i dont press the clutch hard enough.
( +1 for being in a country that uses proper transmissions ninja )

heh, reminds me of my trip to work through town today.
shifting your truck at 5k tends to freak people out when you're on city streets.

Ivan The Surf-Punk For what? Tsuki, are you getting ahead of yourself again? Basics, man, learn the basics and learn them well before you take off and try something a step up from your level. You can't even find the gears, how do you expect to balance anything? +1 for this. And you are thinking about circuit work? Please, for your own safety, learn how to walk before you try to fly. Shifting should be second nature, without even having to think.
