Considering everything I've seen from games, anime, and other media, I can't say I really care to much about it. Different monks do act differently of course, we are all individuals with unique personalities and etc. I've seen enough from anime and games (perveted monks, drunken monks, druggie monks, just plain rude monks) to not really care anymore.
I haven't met any real(as in alive and not in media) monks that fit those descriptions, in fact I was just talking to my brother and grandpa last night about how many priests here in America could learn a thing or two about compassion from Buddhist monks, but some people portray them as such anyways. Perhaps there are monks like that, perhaps they just thought it was funny and we don't see it the same way.
From what I've seen if they aren't portrayed as one of the previously mentioned things they are usually shown as some martial arts master. I haven't really seen many movies, excepting those that are based on true stories or otherwise real events, that show monks as simple, humble, kind-hearted and compassionate individuals who just want to teach, learn, and live in peace
I'm not saying I don't care at all about how monks are portrayed, I would definitely prefer to see them shown more realistically, but perhaps they aren't shown that way because in many media it wouldn't be as interesting or entertaining. As for Pokemon, I think they tried to make all the trainers appear rude to some degree. After all, they're looking for a fight. How many real Buddhist monks go looking for a fight? It's kinda against the goal of ending suffering.
Sorry if my little rant is disorganized. I made the mistake of getting on a forum site while in need of sleep and feeling talkative with nobody to talk to. I'll look over this when I wake up and try to correct anything that doesn't make sense.

I do not think that monks were portrayed very well in the bellsprout tower. Honestly, how many monks challenge people to a fight, but hey, it is a video game.

When I was a kid I was like "hey these guys are nice, they have a real bond with their pokemon" Now.... heh, you guys bring up the violence issue, and that's true. Makes me look at it in a different way. But hey, it's only a game.

It is disrespectful to Buddhist monks, but yeah, it is just a video game. Though, I wish that the media would portray people in general more respectful. It's disappointing hearing and seeing stereotypes shown everywhere when there is no such thing. I guess we like to categorize people... then again, what do I know about other people? XD

Sure, it's an inaccurate portrayal of monks. But is anyone really going to think that real monks act like that because "I saw some monks in a Pokemon game do it"? I just don't see it as threatening enough to be disrespectful.
I think people generally understand that real people don't act like video game characters. Some people even understand that not all (monks/nuns/businessmen/taxi drivers/chimneysweeps) act the same. So before I get offended about things like that, I try to have a little faith in the intelligence of the viewers.
