I'm just wondering if people prefer practicing in covens or by themselves. I have a coven here in Ireland, and I can't imagine studying Wicca without them, I rely on them for emotional support, for information, for so much. And yet, I do most of my spellwork alone, we generally only do circles and stuff together during the Sabbats. But I'm curious about other people's opinions on the matter, do you prefer to study alone or to work in a coven?

Well, I only started a year ago, and I don't have the time or transportation to get to the coven in my city. (There's only one. And it's faaar away.) If I had time to convince my older brother to take me I'm sure I'd love to work with a coven, but he's not going to do that anytime soon. But I find I like being "solitary". (I have many friends who are thinking of making a coven.) It gives me time to make up my own spells, perform any ritual I like, and it gives me a lot of time for reflection. But then again, that's just me. But there are those times I wish I had people who could show me how to do some proper methods for some more complex spells.

I dont prefer being solitairy yet I don't prefer being in a coven. I've never been in a coven so I do not know which one I like more. There aren't any covens near me, Well as far as I know. If I were to be in a coven for just a little while to form an opinion that would be nice sweatdrop

I've found it difficult working with others. As far as wicca goes, you can't really tell how experienced someone is. Only you know truely, how much you practice and how much expertise you've aquired. I haven't found many serious practionners apart from here on gaia. I like having this group to help me out with questions I have, and I think that this is all the support I really need. All my casting and spell work, I do on my own. But I know that if I have problems, there are people here who are serious enough to help me out.

I cast my vote for alone because I've never had a chance to do otherwise, but I'm sure I would very much like to join a coven if I knew were one was near me. I can't even really call myself wiccan yet though because I really know almost nothing about the religion besides what I've been able to glean from listening to people and being in this guild but a coven would be helpful to learning more.

I don't have a coven and I don't work alone, I work in a open circle on my college campus. I like it a lot better then working alone. Even though it is an open circle usually we get the same people each time and develop relationships with them. Usually by the middle of the semester we are all hanging out on weekends and run in to eat other all over the place. The leader of my circle says that is because our energies mix during ritual. The leader of my cirlce has her own coven and she says that she just has to think of one of the persons in her coven and with in a day she sees them. It is a pretty unsual occurance but it is really neat. I like working with a group because we get to learn together, plus I like other peoples views on things that I might not have thaught of before.

Those who work alone, but have others to guide you, or those whom work in covens, I envy you.
I am forced to work alone. It is not pleasant.

I don't know what preconception most of you seem to have about covens, but mine is literally just three of us. We set it up ourselves a few years ago, it's not exactly rigid about rules or anything, but it's really cool because the high priestess knows soo much about everything and she's a really great teacher. I think, even among friends, there should be covens as sort of pools of knowledge even.
My heart goes out to those who have to work alone, while it's better for some spells and ritual work, it is very nice to have someone to ask all of those dumb questions to. smile

I suppose for some reasons being solitairy is good. Then again, a coven would be nice too. blaugh

in reguard to my last post above. After wrting that at the library on a public computer I collected my stuff and headed to my first class of the day. Once I had walked out the doors of the library I ran into one of my friends from my circle. It was really funny because I told her what I had been doing and we both laughed. Five minets did not even pass between writing that post and seeing my friend. It is a truely amazing thing the way that bond works.

I wish I was in a coven. I just think it would be better to work with people in a special/majikal way. But right now Im solitary. I need to find people! gonk

I have not yet found a coven (or rather I haven't asked to join or been invited to one), but that doesn't mean I won't in the future. I know by my nature I'll generally prefer working alone or with a relatively small group. I have done a group ritual, but it was an open circle more than any sort of coven. I'd be more interested in finding a scholarly, knowledgable mentor than joining a coven.

Yeah, i don't like the idea of those big covens. I think that it's so important to know and trust everyone in your coven absolutely, hence I love our 4 person one. 3nodding

Hm. I'd love to be in a coven. Not a huge one, but maybe 6 or 7 people. However, one day I'd like to celebrate a sabbat with a ton of people. Like twenty people at least at a big gathering. I imagine the energies passed around would be interesting. Love to try it. :/ Sadly, there are no coven's in my city. T__T
