This Halloween I decided to dye my hair from it's usual dark brown to a deep red color. I used some temporary hair dye I bought at the store. It looked great, and I was very happy with it.
Unfortunately it's mostly faded out already, but I really liked the vibrant auburn color it gave me (with cherry red highlights, too!). So I'm thinking I'd like to dye my hair this color more often.
However, I'd like to try a more natural dye, because I don't want to damage my hair over time.

So:

★ Does anyone know of a good, non-toxic hair dye that would be very vibrant and stay in for a good amount of time?

★ I've heard of coloring hair with henna, hemp dye, and even different types of tea. Has anyone here tried this, and if so, how has it worked for you?

★ I'm thinking of lightening my hair with lemon juice before re-dying it to make the effects of the dye look brighter. I've seen a lot of different methods for this suggested online. Has anyone here tried this, and can you tell me the best method?

I've used henna and indigo before to cover up my grays- it makes a lovely blueblack dye when blended right- so if the henna indigo combo works, I imagine just henna will work as well as everyone says it does.

It looks like you have duckpoop on your head, and it tingles from the oils that are used to draw out the dye. I think I had terped mine with Tea Tree oil.

Be careful about the henna you use and make sure it doesn't contain anything else. If it is just pure henna, then I believe you should get the color you want and it should be relatively safe.

I use Garnier Fructis hair color because it's the only kind that doesn't burn my scalp. I believe it is ammonia free, but I'm sure it still has some other chemicals in it. I've been using it every few months for the past 3 years to keep my hair black (I'm a natural strawberry blond.) I don't have any complaints so far. It lasts long, it smells nice (which is a big plus when you have some goop sitting on your head for 30 mins) and it doesn't burn. My hair hasn't been damaged noticeably. My ends were a little bit rough, but that could be from the few times I used revlon. Since I cut them off in July they have been soft and not split. The color is also very vivid.

As for lemon lightening, you're supposed to put the lemon on and sit in the sun. It doesn't work as well as bleaching would, but it does bring out natural highlights. I've used it a few times before on my natural color.

All right, I'll see if there are any stores around here that sell henna. I think I saw some kits at a shop downtown, but they were way more expensive than buying henna by itself would probably be. :/
Looking into it more, I also read that pure red henna will make your hair orange-red, but I'd prefer if it was just red rather than orangish. Still, it may be worth a try, and maybe if I want to dye my hair black or blue-black I'll try it with indigo. :3

Okay, thanks. I may try garnier then, if I can find the right shade. I've used garnier shampoo before, so I trust the brand well enough.
Also I don't mind if the lemon juice doesn't lighten as strongly as bleach, I just want to lighten it a little, so that should be fine. ^^

Oh duh, I almost forgot. Manic Panic is vegan and non toxic. They also have a TON of colors, so you're liable to find a color that matches exactly what you want. The website has the hair dyes, and you can click on the color and it'll bring you to a page with a bunch of different people wearing that specific color, so you can see what it looks like irl and at different stages. It's semi permanent, so it doesn't last that long, but I was happy with the color when I used it (I had Atomic Turqoiuse bangs for a few months, that was fun). I did find this page that lists the ingredients and their safety, but overall it's probably safer than most of the other products out there.

Wow, really? That's actually what I used this Halloween, I just never realized it was non-toxic! Well that works out perfectly, then. I hadn't looked at the website (I just went by user reviews), but I will now. Thanks for letting me know, and for the links too!

Manic Panic, Punky, and Special Effects are all vegetable based and totally safe and non-toxic for your hair.
You can even use it on pets it's that gentle. >3
I recommend Punky and Special Effects before Manic Panic though, since they have more staying power!

I may get Special Effects hair dye if I can find some, I've seen pictures of how it looks on unbleached hair and the results look really cool. That's the type of dye I want most, but I can't find it around here, and even the website doesn't seem to have a store section. :/ I'll keep looking though.
Anyone know if the "Amplified" version of Manic Panic works better than the regular stuff? The website says it lasts "30% longer".

I'm surprised at now cool this looks. I have never tried the temporary dies because I refuse to bleach my hair but it works pretty well judging by some of these results.

That's awesome! I had patches of purple in my hair, and since my hair is brown, it needed to be bleached to take the colour.

I didn't yet. sweatdrop I went broke for a few weeks leading up to the holidays and basically only spent money on groceries and Christmas presents, so I resisted buying hair dye...
BUT, now that I have some spending money again, I'm planning on coloring my hair hopefully next week. So I'll post some pictures once I do. ^^
