User ImageSlightly bruised and worse for the wear, having had to sneak through the brush so as not to attract attention, Nata triumphantly dragged the chunk of wildebeest she had stolen from two very . . .distracted . . . lions into the shelter of a fallen tree. It was good to have meat again; her mother had always said Nata was the worst hunter she had ever seen.

Luckily for her, Nata was a scavenger without equal. Otherwise she would have long since starved.
Glancing around to ensure the lions hadn't finished their important business with each other, Nata settled down and tucked in. Wildebeest was one of her favorites.

Kuiba was off on his own, far away from his aunt and father and thankful for it. He had only recently approached them, and demanded that his father take him in after his mother's death. The man hadn't be pleased, but had allowed him to travel with him. He knew his aunt was angry at him for something, but he didn't care. He was his father's son, so the elder male had to side with him, didn't he?

The young male's hyena's shoulders were hunched as he walked. He had no plan of where he was actually going, he was just..wandering. He sneered at a lion couple, who were gnawing on the remains of some prey, as he scurried passed. Last thing he wanted was to get into a fight with lions, and stupid-looking ones at that.

He huffed as he walked, bored and not honestly paying attention as he walked.

As Nata started chowing down, she noticed a male walking toward her. Well, not toward her exactly, but in her general direction. He looked like he wasn't really paying any attention to where he was going; but then again, she often did the same thing. She wasn't going to fault him for that.

She would fault him for stepping in her wildebeest though.

"Dude, what's up?" she said, just to get his attention. She hated pawprints in her food. But she wouldn't mind sharing either.
"Hungry?"

Kuiba jerked to attention, stopping abruptly as someone called out to him. He blinked and looked towards where the female had called to him from, surprised to see that she had what appeared to be a chuck of meat, or more specifically, a wildebeest.

Dude? He repeated the term in his head, a little...confused by the term, but he let it slide, focusing instead on the meat. "I could use a bite t'eat, sure," he muttered, stalking closer to the female and the meat. He probably should have asked if she was sure she wanted to give him some, but he wasn't one to sacrifice his own needs for that of another, especially if that person offered first.

He moved towards the meat, flopping to the ground nearby, but far enough away that if she got snarky, he could up and leave without any damage done to himself. "Ye catch it yerself?" He asked, biting down on the meat.

"Naw, man, I rescued it from two lions who were to into each other to keep an eye on their dinner. But I left them plenty so I doubt they'll come looking for it."
Nata grabbed the other side of the meat and pulled a chunk off, and examined the other hyena. It had been awhile since she had actually spent any time with other hyenas; she had run ins with felines, and confirmed her opinion that they were all grumpy, but she hadn't had any real conversations with other hyenas for quite a while.

"So what's up? Aside from wildebeest. Anything interesting going on?"

Kuiba chuckled at her comment, pleased to hear it. Good. Folk who don't pay attention to their stuff shouldn't have it in the first place, he thought to himself, gnawing off a chuck of the meat. "I doubt they'd even notice at all," he said, with a small, short chuckle.

"Interesting?" He said, pausing in his chewing on the meat. "Around here? Not likely, unless yer got a penchant for annoying snobby detectives." He rather enjoyed annoying his family, who were the resident detectives in the area. "What about'chu?" He said, returning to eat. Maybe if she talked, she'd leave him to eat and he wouldn't be required to talk much. He wasn't the type who could carry on a long-winded intelligent conversation.

"No. I met a god awhile back. He was a grump. But all felines are. Can't take a joke."

Chewing over another chunk of meat, she thought about what he had said about detectives. She stole food, occasionally, when she couldn't find a carcass with enough on it to eat herself, but she didn't take enough that it would get noticed either. Nata was not worried about them tracking her down. Besides, what would they do? Take the meat back? She couldn't really imagine what they would have to investigate. There wasn't really a huge population around here.

"What are detectives doing around here anyway, dude? There isn't a lot to detect around here. Not enough critters, for one thing."

“A god?” Kuiba scoffed a little. He had little tolerance for gods, and he didn't really believe in them. There had to be some, he knew, but that didn't mean he was about to worship any of them. “You got that right 'bout felines. ” He chuckled. He wasn't a fan of felines, he preferred hyenas, or at an absolute push, wild dogs.

He snorted, taking his time to chew the meat he had in his mouth, before he answered her question, with a slight smirk. “Prob'bly lookin' fer me,” he remarked casually, before realising that it probably sounded like he was dangerous or something. “They're my family,” he added, almost as an after thought, leaning down to tear another chuck of meat off. “My father and my aunt. Bunch'a stuck-up 'yenas, seem t'think I'm out to steal everythin' all the time.” He was, but hey, they didn't need to know that.

"Dude, it's like every older hyena is that way. You can't go off on your own for ten minutes without them telling you you're doomed to come to no good."
So she was a little bit bitter about the way her family treated her. She wasn't beholden to them anymore. It was all good.
"I hate it when everyone acts like hyenas are all like, freaking criminals. Even other hyenas do it. Just cause I'm better at scavenging then hunting doesn't mean I'm a crook."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 28, 2010 3:23 pm

Kuiba nodded his head firmly, agreeing with everything she was saying. "Exactly!" He snorted, and dropping the meat, so he could talk and examine her more closely. "Ye should tell my fam'ly that, but they'd prob'bly think yer like me and just'a liar." He scoffed a little, knowing his family would never believe them and probably be as suspicious of her as they were with him.

"Scavanging and 'stealing' is in our 'yena blood, we gotta do it else we won't survive," he muttered irritably.

Nata agreed. "Sometimes it's upsetting to me, that everyone thinks we're scum because we do what we do. No one goes after cheetahs for running fast."

She shook her head and tried to calm down. She didn't like to get upset. Life was a lot easier if you just went with the flow. She preferred to go with the flow.

Nata returned to munching on her food. It wasn't worth getting upset about.

Kuiba scoffed a little. “Not worth worryin' 'bout, girl. They'll judge us no matter what we do, may 'swell do what we enjoy or what helps us t'survive.” He shrugged his slumped shoulders. Sometimes he got angry with his father for judging him, but that wasn't because he was wrong, but because he was his dad and should have believed him over his aunt, but clearly, that was not the case.

He shook his head and stretched, now lazily chewing on his piece of meat he'd torn from Nata's steal. He wasn't so much hungry any more, but he wasn't in a hurry to leave either, so he didn't really need to run off yet, unless she was in a hurry to go somewhere else. He glanced towards her, wondering if she did have somewhere else to be.

Nata didn't show any signs of rushing anywhere. She was still digging at the hunk of meat with gusto. She liked having a full stomach. It felt good. Although now that her stomach was full, she was noticing that their was blood and dirt caked on her front paws from snatching the meat. It would distract her.

After a few minutes, she looked back at the male.

"Dude, do you know of any place around here that's not infested with crocodiles? Like, a watering hole? I feel like having a wash and a swim after this."

Kuiba thought back over his wanderings, before nodding slowly. “Yeh, I do, passed one not long ago when I was just wanderin',” he remarked, before realising she probably wanted him to show her where it was. “I can show yeh if yeh want.”

He'd already pushed himself to his feet, stretching comfortably. His stomach was pleasantly plumped with food and he felt no need to scavenge, or do anything really strenuous. He was...content. He let a lazy smirk twist his face a bit as he waited for her to either move or discount his polite offer. To be honest, he just wanted a drink. The meat had dried his throat and made it sticky, so he wanted something to sooth it a bit.

"Thanks, dude. I'm not used to the area yet, you know?"

Nata stretched as well, then shook the dust off her coat. She was going to have a long drink, and then a nice splash to get clean.

"Let's go."
