There was a boy on the roof.

He was balancing carefully on the edge, a contraption held gingerly in one hand. Sticking up his thumb and sticking out his tongue, he squinted at the sky for a few moments, then promptly pulled some flint out of his pouch, striking it so that something caught alight. Suddenly, the device, which appeared to be some kind of bird shaped thing on closer examination, sputtered into life.

The results were ear shattering. With an explosive roar, it leapt into the air, crackling and billowing thick black smoke, until it finally consumed instelf in flames and scattered ashes onto the ground below. In the street, it seemed like he had caused a commotion, and a woman rushed out from the house whose roof the boy was standing on.

"SUN HUOJIN," she shrieked, causing the boy to wince. "What have I told you about trying those in public? On a busy afternoon, no less! You come right back down here, or I will tell your father!" Sheepishly, the figure on the roof slunk down, all the while trying to explain himself, while the woman threw her hands in the air and went inside. The passersby had gone back to whatever they were doing, the initial shock having worn off. Whatever had happened, it seemed like it wasn't the first time it had occurred.

The boy, meanwhile, had reached the ground, and he looked around to make sure the scolding woman had really gone. Quickly, he crept back inside, and soon he came out with another device, undaunted.

Huang had been walking from the docks back into town with a couple of fishes for his prize. What he thought would be the more quiet and peaceful walk through the town turned into one of the loudest and ear piercing sounds of Huang's life thrumming into his ear drums. It was literally like a bomb had gone off.

Though since the academy test he had encountered, Huang had only become fairly knowledgeable about bombs, though his information was sadly lacking. Any true facts he had were gained during the experience and it was poor at best. So to say fairly knowledgeable meant all he knew was the sounds and the smoke signals of a bomb.

Curiosity got the best of him as he headed to the scene and was met with a screaming woman and a boy balancing himself on the roof of what Huang thought was his house. Huang cocked his head and studied the boy through the interaction with his mother and smirked as the boy snuck what looked like a small bomb in his hands, reaching to light it.

"Hey!" Huang called up and covered his eyes from the glare of the sun, "What are you doing up there?"

"Shhh!" Huojin hissed, jumping down from the roof and trotting up to the other Lunarian.

"Shhhh!" he repeated for good measure. "I'm setting off a complex mechanism meant to imitate the flight patterns of a swallow by using a lightweight bamboo frame with firecrackers within for propulsion. As I light the firecrackers, the resulting force will make the bird's wings flap and lift it into the air, moving it forwards and upwards. The flames will eventually comsume it, all the while, making loud explosive noises and billowing black smoke. It's meant to scare away cats and eventually keep them away from my birds for fear they'll catch on fire, clever, isn't it? If those little scoundrels are going to keep trying to eat my pets, I'm going to condition them to cringe at the sight of even the sickliest sparrow." Laughing in a way that sounded a little too close to a mad cackle, Huojin lifted the "bird" up so his audience could get a look at it. "Sure, up close it doesn't look much like a bird, but since it's just going to set itself on fire, it doesn't really matter. You saw it in action just a few moments ago, right? Well so did my aunt, she's that woman who just went inside, let's say she just doesn't understand me like my mother does."

Huojin frowned at the thought of his aunt and sighed, adding, "She thinks I should use a sword to fight for Lunaria, well I say, there are different weapons than swords, but she says, there's no potential in fireworks, but I say, well, they sure scare you, but she says, well, I'm not a well trained soldier, but I say, well, even well trained soldiers don't expect to see burning birds in the air, but she says it's not good, but how am I supposed to prove it's good to her if she won't even let me try them on the street? What're you gonna do but do it anyway? Everyone's a critic."

He looked appealingly up at Huang and thrust out the hand that wasn't holding his fake bird. "Sun Huojin. What do you think?"

Huang blinked as the boy jumped down from his spot on the rood ushering him into being silent. Which Huang was going to do anyways since he wanted to hear exactly the kid was doing.

Though as soon as the kid jumped down, he rambled on at what excatly he was doing which in truth, just confused Huang extremely. I mean, what did he say, something about combustion? No he was talking about Sparrows. Now wait, he was talking about something eating sparrows?!?!

Huang stood blank faced as the kid's words went through his mind like a whirlwind and he was caught in the force, looking for a way to decipher it all.

Was this kid cackling like a old lady? Huang cringed as the laugh blew by him again and then he was brought into another onslaught of randomness. Something about swords and fighting and firecrackers. But it was all lost in the boys quick speech.

Did this kid even breathe when he speaks? Huang let that thought in and it messed up the whole deciphering of the past minutes of this boy talking.

"Oh I see..." Huang mumbled as he tried to slip back a little, but wasn't quick enough as the kid thrusted his hand out, shocked and still a little dazed, Huang took the other boys hand in his. "I am Lee Huang-Fu, Most call me Huang." Huang still stood in the spot a little awestruck, "Sorry but, you use bombs as a weapon?" Huang was sure that was what the kid had rambled on.

Huojin stopped and blinked. "As weapons? Sort of, but I don't think it would be very ethical to actually harm people with fireworks. I mean, sure, more pretty to look at than a sword or arrows, but you can shoot them off from a farther distance and they don't give people a chance to fight back. Imagine the things they could do!" For a moment he looked wistful at the thought of the capabilities, but then shook his head. "Terrible things," he emphasized. "It's not ethical to use fireworks as anything more than a diversion in war. Fireworks are meant to entertain and distract, not destroy. Destruction isn't very elegant, and it's inherent in the firework-maker's craft to refine and shape the explosions they work with. I mean, what is art without beauty?"

He looked at the bird firework in his hand proudly, adding, "I'm the best at making beautiful firecrackers in my family. I'm going to inherit the business from my father when he retires, I mean, if I don't die in the war. I don't think I'll die in the war though, I mean, I don't plan to. It would just be a hassle to have to drop all my plans like that, you know?" He was talking like the war was something he could plan from behind a workbench. "I've never been in a war before though, so I might not be very good at it at first. Firecrackers are what interest me most, to be honest. I'm not much good with anything else, you know?"

His ears caught up with his mouth and he added, "Also, nice to meet you, Lee Huang-Fu! Are you a demolitions enthusiast?"

Huang was sure that this kid really wasn't breathing, I mean look at him go. It was as if the kid was talking in slow motion, he could see his mouth moving, opening wide before closing at the finish of words. While his mouth moved slow though, the words zipped by Huang, only again catching a few of them. Man he really hoped he picked the right words and responses.

"Um..." Huang was going to ask about the fireworks but the boy sped on, talking about diversions and such. Fireworks as a art instead of a weapon. While Huang thought that was illogical, hell they were in war right now, to each their own and the young man had ideals and a goal. It made Huang a little jealous of the boy's freedom to pursue a job of his own choosing even if ultimately the boy had chosen his father's work.

"I would say that your father would probably be most displeased if you were killed as well." Huang managed trying to get a little of the conversation as he flailed to understand the boy. "Ah War is tough but they teach you how to fight and such in the Academy right?" Huang hadn't needed the training from the academy when he had gone, already on his way to being one of the top assassin's of his age group. He had remembered briefly an attack on the academy by masked gentleman but that was all.

"What is a demolitions enthusiast?" Huang cocked his head at the unfamiliar words. "No no, I am a mere solider in the army of the Legions, the Lee Legions branch of the army I suppose."
