((I will pretty-fy it later))

Jace sighed to himself as he reloaded his rifle. Aim, fire. Feet digging into the ground, the apprentice absorbed the rebound force and watched as the bullet sunk itself in the target. Seated to his left was BlackJade, silently observing. Or maybe he was just thinking about food. Either way, he wasn’t doing anything stupid so it was okay with his rider.

Jace, what is it like having a… mate? the black misted wolf asked out of the blue causing the human to nearly trip over nothing. Getting a weird look in return, BlackJade snorted gently. I just… ci-ci-air-ious, he stumbled over the word.

Well that was good, the growing wolf was just wondering. But how was Jace supposed to explain the fact that he hadn’t been with a girl in a while. In fact, the longest lasting person in his life at the moment, that he could stand, was Kade. And well, he was still sorting things out. Like why he was sometimes annoyed by StormCall who could demand her riders attention and get it in a snap. Why couldn’t he- Snap out of it, Jace!

Snap out of what? The forest green wolf had been paying attention to the quick ramble but it’s not like he completely understood it.

Look Jaden, you’ll understand soon just… for now, let me train. The male said, failing to sight anyone else who might be lurking around. But his partner wasn’t about to give up on the topic so all Jace could do was roll his eyes and return to sharpening his aim. As much as he could with a persistant green and black wolf invading his mind.

Kade walked along the barracks, his hands resting casually behind his head, his eyes looking toward the clear sky above. ‘Great day, isn’t it?’ he asked his Bonded, StormCall, leaning down to ruffle her mane affectionately.

At first, he had always spoken to her out loud, but now, he was used to taking advantage of their telepathy. He found it to be quicker and more efficient, as StormCall had access to the train of thought in his mind. Unfortunately, she was still in the learning stage, and didn’t understand or misinterpreted some of his words. It didn’t help that their minds worked quickly, meant only for themselves and not for another. He could have been going over a battle strategy in his mind and, in the middle of it, add his own commentary or opinions, or get distracted by something he saw or heard, and as a result, those thoughts weren’t as clear-cut as he would have liked them to be. But it was all part of the learning process, for the bond between them had to be great if they were to work together and, with a fond smile, he scratched StormCall behind her ears and continued on his way.

StormCall rumbled low in her throat, and while the sound could seem intimidating to some, she knew that Kade was capable of reading her mood and that he would know the growl she gave him now was one of agreement and affection, not unlike that of a normal, albeit rough, cat purr.

She pushed herself against the side of his legs as they walked, as if to urge him to get on, but both knew she was not yet large enough. It made her sad, sometimes, but it also gave her drive, and she was always eager to train and hunt and grow so that she and her Bonded could work together, as they were meant to. Shoving him teasingly before pushing herself away, she bounded through the grass, a challenging glint in her eye and a playful air in the wave of her tail.

Kade chuckled at StormCall’s actions, and he had to remind himself that, despite her size, she was still a growing wolf. Getting a running start, he threw himself at her, knowing that, at the worst, she would only be winded. They romped and play-fought in the waving grass for a while, Kade trying his best to gain the upper hand and StormCall doing her best to ensure her own blows didn’t hurt him.

Suddenly, the loud crack of a gunshot filled the air, and both paused to look towards the source. Instantly, Kade’s mind was racing, wondering if there was a stray centipede close by, or if they had somehow missed a training schedule. He could find no other reason, for it was cold and early in the day, with the majority of both people and wolves asleep, which was why the pair had come out, to go about the Fort when there was little else around.

Cautiously, they headed towards the sound, StormCall keeping her head high, waiting for the wind to blow in their favor and send the scents of the shooter towards her. But it wasn’t until they reach the training area did they discover the person responsible: Jace, and his bonded, BlackJade.

Instantly, relief washed over him, and he was glad that neither of his assumptions had been correct. StormCall grumbled with what they had found, and Kade gave a soft laugh at that. She had never liked Jace, for reasons he couldn’t comprehend, and he was always trying to bring out his friend’s good qualities so that she would grow to like him, too. Unfortunately, he didn’t have access to her mind as she did his, and so didn’t know he was only accomplishing the opposite of what he wanted. As such, he gave her an affectionate smile, as if that would fix it all, petted her again for good measure, and headed towards Jace.

Good morning!” Kade called jovially, drawing out the vowels, as he ran up to hug his friend from behind. He rested his chin on the male’s shoulder and looked up at him, a good natured smile on his lips. “What are you doing out here so early?

Still bickering with each other, both rider and wolf missed the signs of the approaching figures. So it seems only fitting that Jace would have a little start when a male voice pierced the chilly air. When a pair of arms encircled his waist, the male had to calm himself down a bit. Oh, he knew who it was, it was just that, as he had managed to evade explaining to his little wolf pal, he was confusing himself. Conflicting feelings making him wonder if he was going insane sometimes.

Turning his head to reply to his best friend, Jace's eyes widen when he realized the close proxcimity of their faces. Whoa, too close! Too close! Because no, he wasn't going to admit he liked it. So,cheeks dusted lightly in a blush, he figured he could just blame the temperature for that. At the moment, then and there, he had to worry about calming down and speaking without stuttering.

"Morning Kade. We need to stop running into each other like this," the male chuckled. Really, must they always meet outside where Kade would catch him off guard. "Anyways, shouldn't I be asking you that question? I'm here because for some reason I woke up early and was bored so I came out to practice." Yep, typical Jace. Being at the Academy had made him more serious about what he did, but still he knew the difference between being boring (which he was not), being bored (which he was), and having fun (Which everyone knew he knew how to have fun).

Listening amused at his rider, BlackJade stalked over to his sister, nuzzling her lightly. Hello StormCall, he greeted. It hadn't been to long since the last time they saw each other... had it been? He always lost track when it came to the best friend duo.

When Kade saw the blush on his best friend’s face, his own cheeks began to flame. He let go in embarrassment, mentally reprimanding himself for being so brash. He had only hugged Jace from excitement and… admittedly, a little something more. But, obviously, Jace didn’t think or feel the same way. Kade knew his friend had been popular with the girls back home and that he had enjoyed spending time with them, finding the farm his aunt and uncle lived in utterly boring until they met because of the lack of what he considered attractive girls. No wonder Jace seemed uncomfortable.

He stepped back and laughed, acting as if the action had been nothing more than a tease, and shrugged in response to the male’s question. “I don’t mind,” he said, pretending to stifle a laugh. For one reason or another, he had always been the one to find Jace, not the other way around, and so he was the one that often initiated pranks and surprises, most of which ended comically. He was glad that, by the end, Jace didn’t mind, and ended up laughing with him.

Hello, BlackJade,” StormCall replied, unusually calm. He had always been her favorite sibling and, to show her excitement at seeing him again out of the den, she had always greeted him with some sort of playful gesture. But now, with her unenthusiastic response, she seemed more sophisticated than before… At least, she would have been, if it wasn’t so obvious her nearly monotonous response was only the result of her being distracted by her Rider.

A jealous look appeared in her eyes, and when she felt the mixture of negative feelings emitting from him, ranging from embarrassment to regret, she left her brother to wrap herself around the front of her Rider’s legs, so that she stood between him and Jace, and gave the latter an irritated look, as if it was his fault Kade was feeling that way. After a moment, she looked up to her Rider and gave a low whine, asking in his mind if he was okay and, half-jokingly, inquiring as to whether she should punish Jace for what he did – not that she would mind in the least, but she had BlackJade to consider, after all.

So you decided to wake the whole place up?” Kade replied with mock exasperation. In all honesty, with how large the training field was, he wouldn’t have been surprised if he had been just one of the few who had even heard it.

He was about to ask something else when StormCall suddenly came, curling herself around his legs, giving Jace that look again. He rolled his eyes at his friend, trying to make her stare seem less cold. When StormCall addressed him, he tried to smile at her reassuringly, but couldn’t help blushing again. He’d still have to get used to the fact that she could read even his most private of thoughts but, for the moment, he was just glad she probably didn’t understand most of what had went on in his head.

When she brought up her offer, he frowned and quickly assured her that, no, she should not. After emphasizing it, he thanked her for taking the time to check up on him and, after a quick pat, sent her to her brother, trying to keep her from contemplating too much about his embarrassing thoughts by telling her she could learn a lot from his brother and should, therefore, keep her attention on him.

When she was gone, he smile apologetically towards Jace, wondering what kind of plausible excuse he could give for her having checked up on him. “Sorry ‘bout that,” he said, trying to buy time. Then, finding his excuse, “She was worried because we were so close again.” He laughed, remembering when Jace had headlocked him only a short while after he had bonded, and StormCall had just about went mad, assuming that, because Jace’s arm was around his neck, Kade was being attacked.

Anyways, how’ve you been all this time?” he asked casually. He hoped his friend had just woken up randomly, and not because anything was stressing him out too much.

Frowning a bit when Kade released him, the male felt... a small loss of something. And he wanted it back, but wouldn't it be weird if he randomly just hugged his friend? Snapped back from his thoughts, Jace smiled in response. He didn't mind either. No he rather liked it. Gave him an excuse to get clos- JACE STOP IT the apprentice scolded himself, nearly doing the same to the entertained wolf that was his partner.

Turning back to Kade, he opted for teasing his dear friend in return. "Oh I'm sorry, did you want me to wake you up exclusively and invite you to breakfast?" Jace asked, half joking, half not. One could tell from his warm cheeks that he was embarrassed, content, but embarrassed by his own words. Wait... am I flirting with him? Yes, yes he was. Note to self: Go hid under my blanket later and die of embarrassment. There was BlackJace with his amusement again. Dang wold.

However, said wolf's sister decided to squish herself between him and Kade and, he wasn't going to lie, he could basically feel her want to hurt her which did a good job of distracting him. For what she hated him that time, he wasn't exactly sure, but he had a pretty good idea. After all, he was still observant enough to have caught his best friends flaming cheeks right after the silver haired boy released him from his grasp. Okay, so what if he enjoyed the look. Kade look cute... Shut up and don't laugh, Jaden. God how that wolf got on his nerves sometimes.

Some few feet away, a certain gem colored wolf was having a grand time watching the show that was known as 'Life'. Happiness and laughter dancing in his eyes, he patiently waited for his sister to return. He hadn't been mad or annoyed at her sudden leave because he could pick up on what she was feeling. She was just being her. And frankly, it was funny.

Carefully, almost lovingly, observing Kade's face as he conversed with his wolf, the green banged male picked up the roll of his eyes, the small attempted smile, the blush (score!), the frown and then the sorry smile. All over a short spand of time, and all the cause of StormCall. "Nah, it's all good," Jace replied with a soft chuckle. "You got a great wolf for a partner. She makes me a little jealous that she's the one making you express yourself so vividly now instead of me. Not to mention, when we become full fledge riders she'll always be there to protect you. I kinda wanted that spot," the male confessed, pulling the neck of his coat up higher to try and cover his slightly puffed cheeks.

"Anyways, I've been good. Little bored, but good. That and well, my brother is still avoiding and hating me so, I guess it's the usual." The two of them had always been like that. When Jace attempted to actually bond with his brother he just got brushed off. So somewhere along the way he just stopped trying. Oh well.

"I've also been spending time with some friends and I was even hanging out with Alexis recently. You should try to run into us more often so everyone can hang out." Contrary to his younger siblings belief, Jace had lots of friends, both male and female, but Lysander could think what he wanted to. After all, Jace got the last laugh.

"Anyways, you wanna, I don't know, go grab something to eat and then we could go wandering around for a bit?" he invited Kade.

Kade looked up, surprised Jace had noticed what he himself hadn’t, despite the fact that, frankly, it wasn’t anything new. Years together had made them a coordinated team, even with the addition of their Bondeds, and it wasn’t uncommon for them to take note of a change in the other, no matter how small. But that didn’t make it any less embarrassing.

Hey, don’t be like that,” he said, responding to Jace’s later comment and giving him an encouraging smile. “We can still help each other out, and we’ll need each other more than before, won’t we?” Jokingly, he added, “And I better not get my a** kicked if you’re there.

Putting his hands in his pockets to protect him from them from the cold morning air, he contemplated Jace’s words. It didn’t seem as if the male had any troubles in mind, and he didn’t think Jace was hiding anything from him. Reassured that his previous worries had been for naught, he leaned against the pole behind him and gazed briefly at their Bondeds before returning his eyes to Jace.

Still?” he said sympathetically. He had met Lysander before (how could he not? They were in the same Fort, after all) and he couldn’t exactly say the recruit had been the most… ideal brother. He showed potential as a Rider, but the way he treated Jace made Kade prejudiced against him, and he never let himself enter a position where he and Lysander could have a good ‘ol chat with one another. Lysander was tall enough for Kade to be able to notice him from afar, but other than that, their differing heights weren’t as advantageous to Kade, and he thought this with some negativity. When Jace changed the subject, he made no remark, but willingly followed.

I think I’ve heard of her,” he mused, racking his mind to grasp at anything more substantial than a vague familiarity with the name but failed. “But we should,” he said, agreeing to Jace’s comment that they should hang out. “Any friend of yours is a friend of mine!

I thought you’d never ask!” he said, pushing off from the pole to head towards the dining hall. Quickly, he veered off his path for a slight moment, long enough to push Jace back lightly, and then he was off, sprinting with all he had while yelling “Race you there!” over his shoulder.

StormCall, prodded lightly towards BlackJade’s direction by her Rider, took the hint and went over to him, plopping herself down glumly on his back and tugging on his tail. She felt a sort of exhilaration when they fought, especially if she came out on top, and was hoping to distract herself with it until she remembered Kade’s comment, about how she could learn a lot from her brother.

She released his tail and narrowed her eyes at him, wondering if Kade meant that, somehow, BlackJade had grown to be better than her. Unwilling to believe it, she stood and stayed over him, raising her tail in the dominant way she had seen her parents do. Hoping to test it, she asked, ‘BlackJade strong? Better than Storm?” all the while keeping her fur puffed, her ears pressed forward, and her eyes looking down on him, trying to appear as strong as she could. She was glad showing strength the natural wolf way was much more simpler than learning how to speak human talk. It came naturally to her, and she raised her lips, silently telling her brother that, if he thought himself more dominant than her, she would make him prove it.

"Still and probably always," Jace sighed in reply. His brother really wasn't that comfortable around him and it just made everything awkward between them. So really, until Lysander came to terms with who he was, then they would just be walking on eggshells around each other.

When Kade ripped past him in a sprint, the green and black haired male blinked before sprinting off in a fit of laughter after his friend. "Hey wait up, Kade!" Starting to catch up Jace's legs start to work faster. "Oh no you don't!" Arm snaking around his friends waist, the male tried to drag him to a stop and spin the other around in an attempt to get ahead.

Eye slits directed up towards his sister, BlackJade allowed his sister to place herself down on his back as always. It seemed she had made it a habit to sling herself over his back when ever she felt that Kade's attention was all being directed at Jace.

Swishing his tail lightly to try and release it from StormCall's mouth, the younger wolf watched the other carefully as she puffed herself in an attempt to look much stronger then she was. Padding to his feet, BlackJade replied, Not sure. Possibly, knowing that she wouldn't like the reply. But he wasn't afraid to prove himself. After all, they had both grown not just in mind but in body. He would not back down.
