This was -not- one of the weekends he would have elected to come home for ANY amount of time, but he had to. He should have remembered before he -started- that it was His mother's birthday and that she would, naturally demand that he be there. He worried very much how Beth would take it though, their mothers had been twins, a strange situation at best but now that one was dead...
The real problem though wasn't the odd and growing strain between Beth and his mother, it was how to explain the bruises he was currently sporting. Yes they had already faded thanks to a few days rest, but they were -there. He'd blame it on bullies at school of course... but he didn't want to set off his Cousin's sense of justice and have her crashing out the door in search of a fabled villain who wouldn't have the slightest clue what she was talking about. He'd have to be evasive...vague, and maybe toss in a little cranky to make sure she didn't question too much or too deep.

Beth had tried her best to settle in... truly she had. This house was similar to her old... if you close your eyes and pretend to add furnature that is. The place was spartan! If she had a choice... she probably would have decorated the whole house. Instead she took her frustrations out on her bedroom... well, the guest bedroom turned hers now. Zac's family was all she had left, minus her abroad father whom sent a little money... So she was stuck here.
Beth had a feeling her aunt really disliked her, anytime she approached she would either turn her nose away, or give short quipped answers. It was hard sometimes... while they sported different clothing and personalities, Zacs mother looked SO much like Beths had... sometimes she would have to walk away as the sight of her constantly brought back memories. One time she made the mistake of saying 'mom' to her aunt.... that got her the silent treatment for a few weeks.
Beth spent a lot of her time home inside her room, doodling or doing anything to pass the time. Being senshi helped too... transforming in her room and leaping out the window.
She was sitting on the couch in the living room today, sporting her drawing pad and was chewing on the back of her pencils eraser. She was expecting to see Zac today... it was afterall their mothers birthdays. Well, at least Zacs mom didnt have to share it anymore..... She bit the pencil a little harder as that thought came through.

The key turned in the lock and the door creaked slightly as it swung inward, He glanced down the narrow hall, as expected he'd made it there un-noticed, though if Beth were here that would not last for long, and he intended to shorten even that time.
"Mother?....Beth?" He called down the hall to see who was home. He let his book bag, filled more with homework than clothes slide off his shoulder and into the crook of his arm. "I'm home..." He added though it was deeply redundant.
"...if anyone's here..." He added more quietly to himself. He winced, his ribs still ached and he let the bag drop down the last way to his palm, half dragging it by the strap. Were his Mother home yet she'd have yelled from whatever room she were ensconced in already... Beth was a little more distractible.

A little more chewing on her pencil, and thats when she heard the gentle closing rap of the door. Was it her Aunt? If it was... then Beth should probably stay in place, or run up into her room... She would rather not get hit again.
Just as she was about to flee up the staircase... she heard her voice being called. It was a voice she was hoping it was, it was a voice that always brought a smile to her face... he was a sanity she needed. Placing her sketch pad and pencil down, beth went darting towards the front door. "Zaaccc!" She called a second before she tackled him into a tight hug.

"OOOMPH" Zac exclaimed followed by a wheezed 'ouch' or something like it as he hugged her all the same, cursed bruised ribs, they would only have been topped by a bruised tailbone he decided. "Hey Couz, how are you?" He said trying to sound as relaxed, and normal as possible. "How are classes going for you?" He asked letting the bag fall to the ground so he could hug her properly. She was one of those few spots in his life that he considered a sort of peaceful oasis. He was so glad she wasn't caught up in the war...he'd have done so much to make sure it had never touched her life as it had when Scheelite had accidentally killed her Mother.

If only he knew He too was a comfort to her... it felt like since she got tired up in being senshi, everyone she knew was in this war. She loved her friends still though, she just wished it didnt feel like she led a double life. With Zac she could at least feel normal...
Barely taller than her she gave him a tight squeeze before letting go. "Same ol' boring routi- .... what happened to your face." She gasped, wide eyed now that she noticed.
(( EDIT- OH s**t OOPS THIS IS LIL i was helping ende put banners in her journal augh XD ))

"...Drunk's at school..." He said with a small shrug. "What would you expect from people who resort to violence over words... honestly If people spent more time thinking things over rather than rushing in to punch things..." He shrugged as though it were nothing at all. "I should have learned to dodge faster... It's not as though I haven't had practice.... we should go get her Cake ready before she gets home... I think she's been stressed from work." He sighed and thought of the other evening when she'd drunk so much, he pondered pouring out the booze in the house and wondered if that would just make things worse.

Still she couldnt help but examine his face, it really looking like someone just...beat the snot out of him. Taking her hands she gently touched his face on either side, turning his face back and forth. "The hell cousin.... WHO did it. I mean drunks shouldn't be allowed in school right?" Her eyes narrowed, clearly thinking about how she was going to get revenge on the people who did this. If only she knew... she would be punching herself.
"Your trying to change the subject...." She said with a pout and poked him in the shoulder. Probably the shoulder Lyra had clawed days before.
"...But your right we probably should get that cake started." She eyed him warily, worried... she stepped aside to let him through, offering to help with carrying his bag.

"It's a reform school Beth." he said fluffing her bangs. "Some people are just harder to reform than others, I'm lucky I can go home like this... some people aren't supposed to but you get SOME credit for good behavior." He trailed off...there were times when he pretended he couldn't go home at all though, just because he had no desire at all to deal with his mother.
"She likes chocolate best..." He said leading the way into the kitchen with a small sigh. She liked chocolate -too- much in his opinion. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting just made his stomach turn. He'd eat it just to be polite and then drown it in as much milk as he could stomach without being sick.
"And...regardless of the temptation to let you cook, just hand me the ingredients ok?" He said with a grin and a small wince, his lip had been split and it looked raw still.

"Just because its a reform school doesn't mean its ok." She huffed childishly as she followed him into the kitchen. "We need to get you some self defense training or something Zac..... i dont like seeing you hurt." She looked down as her voice trailed off at the end. He was her one source of normality... she would find who did this.
"Maybe we should put some sort of sprinkles on top... and not brown ones cause chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and sprinkles just SOUNDS bad.." She went and grabbed the flour off the pantry shelf and brought it to him. "I mean even my sweet tooth has limits..." Chocolate was one of those things eaten best in moderation. "And.. Heeeeeeyyyy ive been practicing!" ...Much to her aunts dismay.

"Practice dose NOT mean perfection, remember the shortening frosting?" He said with a small grin and pulled a glass from one of the cupboards for a glass of water and then fished for the metal mixing bowl.
"I think..." He mused. "That last time I was home I had some cream cheese frosting, are you still ok with that? Theirs a... frosting bag too if you wanted to play." He offered, it had never been opened. His mother had purchased it once while they were out at the supermarket. She'd declared that she was going to be more 'homey' and like martha stewart, this had been just after Beth's mother had decorated a cake so well it might have well been a baked 'Hanging gardens of Babylon' "Just....let me refill it ok?" He added quickly.

She rolled her eyes at that. "Im sure your a master chef now, eh Zac?" She grinned wondering what he ate in his dorms... probably take out or ramen. SOME practice there!
Cooking was something she sucked at, but decorating and art in general was something she inherited from her mother. "Im not sure if ide be as good as mom but.. she did teach me how to make seashell borders and frosting roses." She beamed... before looking down and away again. Clearly memories were still a sore spot. She looked away from Zac so he wouldn't see the look on her face.

"I can at least tell Baking soda from baking POWDER" He teased and then stopped as the expressions flickered over her face and she turned away. ... "I can...make frosting imitations of the blob...if that counts for anything." He offered trying to make her smile again. He reached a tentative hand to touch her shoulder lightly. "I'm....sorry." He said and he meant it more than she could ever know... It was as much his fault, maybe more than anyone else's and he couldn't even say.

"...It was only a SMALL explosion ok.." She mused looking back as he touched her shoulder. She was trying to be stronger... Suddenly her eyes took on a hard expression. Clearly she was trying to push the memories away, but why did those eyes look so familiar?....
"Dont be." She said putting on a obvious fake smile. "It's not like it is your fault Zac."
To try and change the subject, she went about grabbing other ingredients..." Was their ketchup in cake?"

That was a lovely knife twist of guilt... he winced as he turned to grab the measuring cups only to turn just as quickly, pushing aside the familiarity of the intensity in her eyes at the word KETCHUP.
"NO!...NO KETCHUP!" He said in alarm "Eggs! Milk! No ketchup! That's for scrambled eggs and only when their done!"
