I have been having the worst time lately, it's like nothing I do is working.

I knew my queen control and creep spread was lacking, so I started putting more attention into that, check.

I knew my scouting was getting really poor so I started putting more attention into that, check.

I tried to maintain fairly decent macro (though I have been slipping a bit lately due to working on my other weak points) check.

Yet I have just been losing over and over again it seems. I think it might be time to go back to the drawing board again and review my strategies and do some more ai build practice and focus on my weak points and timings more so I can figure out where I am screwing up and fix it.

Actually I believe a lot of it has to do with work taking up so much of my energy that my apm has dropped significantly, and I haven't had as much time to review my analysis and game replays, but that's still no excuse for my display of horrid game play lately.

use hotkeys. i was previously going to post in your replay thread earlier but you have realized your mistakes (Queen control, lack of scouting, etc) and are attempting to rectify them, therefore you don't need any more of my help as far as insight and collective feedback. except for that one tip. use more hotkeys.

a majority of the time you can do required actions without even moving the screen. hotkey your Hatchery groups, your Queens, a tech building of your choice, all of your starting Overlords pre-Lair, your air units, your Zerglings, then the rest of the force. air units need to be split because of their extensive mobility, and also faster units such as Zerglings or Hellions for the same reason. a common mistake for people to do is to hotkey all of their ground units in the same control group. inevitably, if you group your Hellions and your Thors in the same group and attack-move with them, the Hellions will be much farther ahead, creating a gap in attack synchronism. keep them separate and control them individually.

collectively, the lot of you Zerg lack hotkeys. of most of the Z replays I've seen across the threads in this guild, much of the gameplay could flow more efficiently had people used more hotkeys. to get the point across, I will use a scenario given a list of hotkeys and the situation.

1: Mutalisks
2: Roach/Hydras
3: Zerglings
4: Queen 1 and 3 (in-base)
5: Queen 2 (at secondary Hatchery)
6: Hatchery Group 1 (main Hatchery in-base, tertiary Hatchery nearby)
7: Hatchery Group 2 (secondary Hatchery at natural expansion)
8: Two Evolution Chambers
9: unused
0: All Overlords

assume the map is Lost Temple, and I wish to bring my main forces to the middle of the map in order to prepare to assault the enemy base. center the camera to the center, 2A, 1A, 3A (slower units first to compensate for lack in movespeed). now while units are heading over, I want to macro while still keeping an eye on my troops and their destined location.

I want to make more Mutalisks and help saturate my worker line at the natural expansion, 6STTTTVV 7SDDD. armor/range upgrades have just finished and I have spare econ to re-upgrade. 8AC. my Overlords are in position but I forgot to generate creep when my Lair had finished. 0G. all without taking the center screen off the center of the map.

if you want a little more emphasis on macro, you can switch the cameras. center the camera to the base quickly by double pressing 5 or 4 (55, 44) and inject larva individually. the Queens have extra energy, so I queue two Creep Tumors and queue movement back to the nearest Hatchery to re-inject once the previous one is finished. while I'm centered on the base, I can attend to it while I'm still there: transfer three workers to an Extractor, make a second gas, expand Creep Tumors, tech Infestation Pit and re-rally point the Hatchery groups before tending back to the attack group.

i understand that you guys know how this stuff works, and that some of you even do this and do your best to maintain the upkeep. but the point I'm trying to get across is that you can't be wasting time switching screens back and forth when it can all be possibly done just by inputting a few keys. you have to practice multitasking with hotkeys like this so you can be as efficient as you can.

i'm not trying to be mean or harsh or anything but that's what it takes. besides that, just keep learning from experience, and keep practicing. good luck. xp

Just a pointer - you can also inject larvae via the mini-map; just hotkey your queens, then click on each hatchery on the mini-map. The closest queen with energy will inject.

I appreciate the pointers and am currently trying make efforts towards following your suggestions, it's hard to force yourself into new control groups, but I'm playing a lot of a co-op vs AI matches where all I do is focus on getting comfortable with more control groups and multitasking.

it's understandable. learning anything is a slow process that takes time to get used to. what I listed was simply an example that is considered ideal. it was used to demonstrate the efficiency of hotkeys, as I myself don't even take the time to hotkey tech buildings or Queens if Zerg.

you just have to start small. at least work on hotkeying units since they're more important to refer to. then you can start working up on production facilities and then all the other extras.
