"Ugh, would you--" "Stop it!" "You terrible little thing, stop laughing at me!" Finally, Eclipse had had enough. He had been followed by an owlcat ever since making his way out of the cave. He had failed to find the source of the luring, taunting voice, had stumbled and gotten lost in a maze of sparkling magic; he'd gotten so turned around, so hopelessly tangled, that he'd found himself back to where he'd started without even trying. And he had been accompanied the entire time by an owlcat with snickering eyes and lashing tail. An owlcat that had seemed to take a shining to him, at least because it seemed to feel Eclipse was worthy of mockery. Eclipse had, again, managed to chase after a woman and lose her. Losing his patience, Eclipse aimed a hoof in a well-placed kick at the owlcat, who darted nimbly out of the way, licked a front paw, and then lashed its tail at him. The buck sighed, tossed his head (would he be able to gore it with his horns, he wondered), and then began making his way back to his usual stretch of swamp. Twenty paces later, he had a niggling feeling that the owlcat was following him, and he looked over his shoulder for it. Nothing was on the ground... but something high up in the trees gave a giggling, mocking little mrowl of laughter.

"Wow, that's creepy." Peeper had had to drop a load of seaweed to say it, and the bitter taste made him lick his lips and grimace. "Ew. Gross. And creepy. Hi. Is that yours?" He squinted up at the crazy looking owlcat. Bleeding Heart hopped up onto Peeper's back so that two pink pairs of eyes studied Eclipse, and then the owlcat. "Looks like you."

Eclipse whirls to face the other kimeti; he'd been lost in thought. For a horrifying moment he'd thought that the owlcat had been the one to speak, and relief sits plainly on Eclipse's face when he sees the pink buck behind him. The owlcat, for his part, sat in the branches of the cypress tree and blinked at them, and then hissed at the mongoose. "He's not mine." It came out with more vehemence than he really intended. "He followed me here. Would you like him?" The black kimeti smiles. "You can have him if you'd like."

Peeper laughs at him, but it isn't mean-spirited. Nothing about this buck seems particularly mean at all. "No thank you. I'm already in enough trouble." The mongoose on his back chitters angrily in return at the owlcat; Peeper has no doubt that Bleeding Heart might just go off and try to pepper the beast with acorns or pebbles. "I have to drag this back to my -- um. Friend. I help him feed his giant butt turtle." It's pretty obvious that when Peeper says 'my -- um. Friend' what he really means is more like I love them sooo much but they don't seem to love me yet even though I love them to pieces and they probably don't even realize it but oh well so I call them friend to avoid any awkwardness even though it's really just not the right word AT ALL.

Eclipse is a poet. He understands, if in a slightly skewed way; his one great love has now been lost to time. And the fling he had after eating those berries ... that doesn't bear talking about. For the moment, Eclipse manages to ignore the creepy chittering of the owlcat in the trees above them, even ignoring the way its black eyes wink down at him like two empty husks -- and then tips his head at Peeper. The motion is magnified because of his long spiraling horns. "A friend." He nods to himself, and then asks, "You've a lot on your mind, haven't you?"

"Uh." Peeper thinks about that for a minute and makes another sound like a laugh. "No, not really. It's mostly one thing, to be honest, and not very complicated, just um." He scuffs one hoof in the dirt. "Difficult. Like getting a log out of a mudhole. Not complicated, just hard."

Eclipse stands very still -- and the dignity he puts forth is all at once shattered when a well-aimed acorn (and a sizeable one) pelts him right in the ear, startling a yelp out of him. Peeper will actually be able to hear him grind his teeth together. "--perhaps we should move. Does your -- ah. Does your friend know of your intentions?"

Bleeding Heart chitters at the owlcat again, leaning up with front paws on the side of Peeper's neck to do it louder. Peeper bears with this with every evidence of humor, and blinks at Eclipse's question. "Uh. I have no idea. Probably. He's um. Kind of." How did one describe Nettle? "....kind of himself."

The owlcat hisses down at the mongoose, clearly sporting for a challenge. There's just something not right about the owlcat -- perhaps because it came out of what was a questionably-bewitched cave. Perhaps because the damn thing is evil, which is more what Eclipse leans towards. The black kimeti lashes his tail and starts off at a sedate walk away from the copse of trees, indicating that Peeper should follow.
"So get through to him, somehow. Fight fire with fire. Outdo him. Confound him."

Peeper stares at Eclipse before picking up the seaweed and continuing with him. His voice is muffled, but still understandable. "You've never met him. I dare you to say that if you ever meet him. Besides, I don't want to outdo him or -- or confound him or anything. Why would I? I l--err. Care about him a lot." One ear flicks back irritably. "I just want him to know that I care. All that stuff would probably just make him grumpy."

"Orrr," he muses, drawing out the word (to hide the fact that he finds this all horribly amusing), "Go the more subtle route. I guarantee you that if outright affection will make him grumpy, if you slip it in where he doesn't notice..." Eclipse glances over his shoulder at Peeper. Blessedly, there is no owlcat behind them.
That glance becomes shrewd for a moment. "Otherwise it will eat you alive."

Otherwise what would eat him alive? Peeper gives him a strange look around the seaweed. "Why would it eat me alive? I'm happy. I get to den near him and see him everyday. If he doesn't figure it out, well -- he's not stupid or anything--" he sounds a little offended, as if Eclipse has implied that somehow. "--he'll put water and dirt together and get mud eventually."

This pink buck must be -- more emotionally inclined than intellectually inclined. Eclipse sighs. "I'm afraid I wasn't quite clear. I meant that the longer you let it fester, the more it will bother you. He just may not figure it out fast enough for your liking without a proper nudge in the right direction." He smiles thinly.

"Let what fester? What's festering?" Peeper has the sneaking suspicion that they are talking about two entirely different things without realizing that they were. How weird was that? "He's smart. He doesn't need nudges." It sounds a little defensive, but for good reason -- who in hell was brave enough to nudge Nettle? Certainly not Peeper. His bravery ran out at loving him.
