This is the gate entrance to Orlarbor. It is guarded 24/7 by 68 archers, 30 spearmen, 15 knights, and 52 men-at-arms. The gate has been hit over and over by the enemy forces but manages to hold them at bay. The gate is renforced after every attack to hide breaches and cracks. This gate has gained the nickname "Death's Door" for all that has fallen here.

Kaiden Skyheart________ Our fear of the darkness now is nothing next to their fear of the coming dawn.
It was a harsh, dreary, depressing evening. Rain fell down in a steady drizzle that coated everything in a fine mist and left an uncomfortable dampness on the clothes of the unlucky men and women who had the unpleasant duty of having the guard shift for Death's Door. Torches were lit, the drizzle not nearly harsh enough to put them out, and the light they gave off were one of the few comforts the soldiers had this night. Repeatedly Kaiden had to issue an order to stand at their post, as several had tried clumping up around those various torches for an extra bit of warmth to fight through the evening's chill.
Kaiden was once again making his rounds at the gate, checking to make sure all the guards were alert and awake and doing their jobs. His boots clacked on the stone wall of the ramparts as he walked the length of the wall, a tough, brown cloak his one defense against the cold. His hair hung down on his face in a damp, brown mess that had no hood to shield it from the rain, and regularly the corporal would have to reach up to stroke away a trickle running down into his eyes.
This wasn't his first night in charge of the watch, and nothing had happened, but it was starting to feel like one of his longest nights nonetheless. He was cold, tired, soaked, and just all around miserable, and he couldn't wait to get home and relax by a fire....presuming that it didn't rain any harder and flood his fireplace.
Coming up on the next post of sentries, he wiped his hair out of his face again as he began to make his way back down the turrets to ground level.
"I'm in for a long night, aren't I?" he asked to no one in particular.
If only he had any idea just how prophetic that statement really was...

A young women, one not much older than a child to most, was one of the many guards placed on night watch this dark and dampened evening. She was cold, but her will and determination was enough to keep her where she was, above the gate of Elleria's city of Orlarbor. Oh how she hated nightwatch, it's unsureness and insecurity was frightening for the girl.
She shivered once, feeling it rack her spine as she took a step, deciding that walking would provide some sort of desperate warmth. Her steps were soft, yet she wore the heavy boots that half-witted guard would have for an evening like this.
Reaching up, she brushed the long strands of orange hair away from her chocolatey eyes. This night was proving its length, and she was close to despising it. With a small sigh she turned, spotting a brown haired boy that she vaguely recognized. He seemed as exasperated as she was, and honestly, she felt talking would make the time pass faster.
"Aye! Uh-" She cut off, what was his name? She had seen him on watch before..."Kaiden?" Yes, it was something like that...right?

Kaiden Skyheart________ Our fear of the darkness now is nothing next to their fear of the coming dawn."Aye! Uh....Kaiden?"It was probably just a bit of a burst of temper, but nonetheless, Kaiden rounded on the voice that came from behind him with a sharpness that came from serious irritation. That was as much of an outburst that came before he managed to get himself under control before he shouted at her for something stupid like not calling him by his rank or something else.
Even though he was actually somewhat obligated to scold her on protocol.
He sighed, no, forget it. Who even cared tonight? Last thing he wanted was a shouting match with someone. He didn't even think he could work up the energy to shout right now, every part of him was stiff and sore from the miserable cold.
The girl was only vaguely familiar to him, she wasn't usually on the night shift, although casualties had caused some personnel changed. She wore a soldier's rank emblem, but he couldn't quite recall her name. Cassie? Something like that? What he did know was that she was alarmingly young. He thought he was a young soldier, this girl was barely an adult!
"Yeah, that's me, just don't forget my rank too, whenever the sergeant's in earshot, all right?" He compromised amiably, probably more amiably than his job insisted he be. He turned around, and walked back over to her. "All quiet tonight?"

Cashmire frowned, and her mind wandered to questions. What had she done? Perhaps it was just the weather...after all, she herself wasn't exactly happy to be standing in her current position. However, when he spoke, she mentally sighed, cursing that she had forgotten rank, again.
The knight nodded, remembering his rank as she caught his uniform. Crap. "Yessir." she quickly said, trying to make amends with a salute. "Very quiet this evening...besides the rain."
She brushed aside the bangs from her eyes, not even remembering to hold her salute until it was returned. All her life she had been told she was absent minded, and it seemed worse now that it was tested in the military.

Kaiden sighed and shook his head, but he decided to just let it go. Normally he'd remind soldiers what they were doing wrong, better if he caught it then an officer, right? But as it was, he let it drop. Besides, tonight was probably just as long for this young lady as it had been for him as well, right?
"What's your name, soldier?" Kaiden inquired, gently adjusting the straps that held his light, wooden shield to his forearm as he asked the question. "How long have you been here?"
He bit his tongue to avoid asking 'how old are you?' Yes, she was young, but the question would have been insulting nonetheless.

True, it had only been a quick three months, with few squirmishes to speak of. But she planned on a long career, as the war seemed to hold no end in sight. And I fight for more than myself.
Snapping out of her thoughts, she sighed, aware that she had let her thoughts wander uselessly and without need. She rubbed her eye for a brief moment, knowing that she could probably sleep where she stood. With a shake of her head, she glanced up, asking her own question."If you don't mind me asking, How long have you been fighting sir?"

Cashmire, hmm? Nope, he hadn't heard of her before. At the very least she wasn't someone he was particularly familiar with. He knew most of the people he worked with, though he could hardly say that he knew everyone stationed at the gates or in the city. Or even in his particular post sometimes. Especially with so many personnel getting shuffled around these days
Suddenly she turned around and asked him his own question, and his face betrayed a moment of surprise on the question. He hadn't really thought about it for a while, especially not in the chaos that had happened.
"Actually....with as many attacks as we've had against this city....I can't quite remember. It's kinda been something of a blur..." he admitted, as suddenly he put his hand to his chin in a pondering manner. "I think.....I think it's been just a little over a year, actually, since I completed my training and got stationed here. As for fighting? Well, originally I was out guarding a couple of warehouses in the rear of the city, escorting couriers....duties like that. After the....the casualties, I started seeing action at the gate about....six, seven months ago?"
He shrugged, "I dunno, never had a head for keeping track of time....or keeping track of anything else for that matter..."
He cocked his head sideways, glancing at her. "So, have you seen any combat? Or are you new to this post?" He phrased it that way because, if you hadn't seen any combat, you had to be new to Death's Door. They dealt with a raid every other week for the past several months. Kaiden hadn't been in the city for the last major attack, however.

╔══════════════╗ Ͼ ᾳ ʂ ɧ ɱ ɩ ɍ ϵ † Ș ɩ ɍ ɭ ϵ ɀ ╚══════════════╝ Cashmire listened with interest, figuring that any information given by someone higher ranking than she would be important for her own career. He had been in for a year, and he didn't look far older than her, so perhaps she would be able to rise among the ranks. She smiled at the thought, as she knew that sometime, she would have to prove her worth.
"No sir." was her honest response, as she had never been a battle. One small threat had appeared about a month in, but that was it, and it was only a crazed man waving a knife at her party. She had no idea what true battle was like, yet a part of her mind never wanted to find out. However, the majority of her mind told her to go out, and fight for her country, villiage, and family. That was the side she preffered.

Kaiden Skyheart________ Our fear of the darkness now is nothing next to their fear of the coming dawn.
Kaiden frowned, he hated seeing a new person at Death's Door. The place was as bad as it got, and fresh meat was always the ones who seemed to fall first. Most of the people here were solid veterans. Kaiden was not necessarily battle-hardened, but he'd seen enough action to know more or less what to expect.
"You're one of the lucky ones, then," he responded, "And I-...." suddenly he interrupted his own thought and began staring off the wall into the night. A flicker of light out in the darkness was steadily getting larger....or closer.
"There's somebody out there, who is that?" he asked, knowing it had to be a person. No demon would light there way, it wouldn't make sense. Demons were stronger, better in the dark. And if someone was coming this way in the dark, while the roads were infested with demons, it must be urgent indeed.
"Cashmire," Kaiden's tone had changed from professionally friendly to dead serious in an instant, "Get down and tell them to get that gate open, whoever that is we need to get them inside."
With that order issued, he turned and hustled down the stairs down to round level to receive whoever had been coming their way.

Cashmire nodded sharply, recognizing the change intone from her supieror. He was serious, and whatever was coming toward them gained priority over whatever thoughts she held.
Turning on her heel, the girl dashed off to the gatekeepers small post, where she spoke briskly, trying to hold some air of importance. "Orders from our supieror, open the gate. Quickly!" She rested her hand on her hips as she was listened to, and the gate began to slowly rise.

Kaiden Skyheart________ Our fear of the darkness now is nothing next to their fear of the coming dawn.
Kaiden dispatched some other orders to nearby archers as the sounds of the gate winch slowly turning reached his ears, and he quickly hustled down the stairs in the same direction Cashmire had gone. It hadn't taken him too long, and soldiers were already looking much more awake than they had been.
Kaiden frowned as a lone rider, bearing a lantern on his mount, galloped into view. As soon as he was inside the gates, Kaiden walked right up to the man.
"Who's in charge here?" The rider asked, a tall, sweaty man, bearing a courier insignia.
"The gate sergeant's in the tower," Kaiden responded, "I'm the sentry lead for the night. What's your business?" He was curious. For a courier to brave the demon-infested roads at night meant whatever message was to be delivered was important indeed. There could only be so many reasons.
"Why I am here is far beyond the pay grade of a corporal," and Kaiden had to suppress the urge to bristle at that comment, "But I will tell you what I saw on the way here. A force of demons, easily five dozen strong....at least, is headed this way! They were mere minutes behind me when I arrived in sight of the city!"
Kaiden's eyes narrowed in dark anger toward the coming storm.
"Close the gates!" He yelled, and immediately the cullis began lowering, "Send word to the gate sergeant! Sound the alarm!"
Several soldiers scurried off, and as Kaiden turned to speak to the courier again.....the man was gone.
"The hells?! Get-!! Ugh! You, and you!" Kaiden snapped at two of the three soldiers standing nearby, "we never verified his story. Find where he ran off to!"
"You!" He said, turning to Cashmire, and he paused, frowning. Cashmire had never seen action, certainly not with demons. "You stay with me. If you've never seen combat before then stay close, you're about to."

Taking a small step back, Cashmire simply watched as Kaiden spoke with other guards. She glanced up, studying the drizzly darkened sky with a good amount of worry. If they were under attack, this shift would prove to be long, and frightening. But she was ready for her training to pay off, and allow her a chance to serve this land dutifully. She slowly rested her hand on the scabbard covering her sword, just enough to gain somme ensureness that the metal was there, and ready to be in her grip.
"You!"
Snapping back to reality at the sharp sound, she nodded curtly, blinking her eyes a few times in confusion. Stay close? Oi, had her mind really wandered again? "Yes sir." She heard his ending sentence, feeling as if she was going to be a bother, but she knew it was helpful to her mind set to be near someone with more experience.
