Because, I can't help myself, I start this thread wherever I go, hoping to spark commentary/discussions/whatever. Point of this thread is to analyze the Boingo songs. Or, if you don't want to analyze and you want to talk about antoher song in general, just talk about that other songs, why you like it, how the lyrics affect you, and so on and so forth.

Ex. I love Gratitude for a variety of reasons. One is the inherent sarcasm in the question. "Now is that gratitude?" He sounds like everything is going on just peachy, but there is more than a hint of darkness in that song when you listen to, and look at the lyrics. In fact, to me, it seems to be about someone who went through a bad relationship, among other things. And yet, he (or she) is unable to get over it, and while s/he wants to forget. Wants to end it all, they are unable to. And left being courteous to those that hurt them. "Life's been so good to me. Has it been good to you?" is in a way highly sarcastic, as in the entire song he talks about getting knocked down. And then, the most haunting line, (and the one I love him singing) is when he finishes saying about how the person just knocked him down and destroyed his castle and ego. And then sings "I dream of you sometimes" Showing his inability to get over it, and from the way he sings it, his want to actually remember. His wish that things did not turn out this way, and that she would actually give him some Gratitude.

Long and convoluted, but I tried. Okies, it's started. Go my , er, you rampant boingoloids you!
(and yes that was a copy paste. Too lazy to make a new one ^^ wink

Ooh, definately agree. I'd never really thought about that song before. It just was what it was.

Does anyone have any idea what the song 'Mary' is about? My friend is convinced it's about a lesbian, but.. I don't think so. I mean, it could be, I'm not ruling anything out, but.. concidering other phrases used ("And she left all her friends behind to wander all alone," "And though still alone, she grew so much inside," etc.) I don't agree with him. But, as for what it's about, I really don't know. Witchcraft? Any ideas?

I've always thought it was about the Virgin Mary (the Mother of God, for all you athests out there). Just how she up and left... ...I mean, the way Danny tells the story isn't really correct, but some of it is. *shrug* There's really no other way I think of it. From the second I heard it through, that's what I though it was.

My friends and I discussed Mary once before and one of the meanings we came up with was Mary becoming a hedonist.
The story was about a sheltered girl who broke away from her strict god upbringing and came to enjoy life. And she came to love sex, enjoy herself, wallow in sin, etc. AT least, that is what we got.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking, yeah. Kind of a vague story, really. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ^^

On the issue of Gratitude, I had never really thought about it like relationship problems. I mean at certain parts, it sounds like it, but if you watch the video, that doesn't really work. I mean, all of your points, Yu~ziko, made perfect sense, especially the sarcasm, because Boingo did alot of that. It's just the video... The part with the choir at the beginning and him slapping the man and the woman, was odd. But, hey, you could be right.

One song, however, that's quite clearly about a relationship (obvious transition to my annalasys!!) is Running On A Treadmill. Although, it is quite obviously about a relationship, you could take it as several things. It could be that there is some person he is very interested in, but doesn't view him that way. And he's trying to prove to her that they could work together, but he justkeeps repeating himself and falling over himself. And he's been trying so long that he feels like "he's been like this forever" and he can't quite tell when he's tryping to impress her or just being him anymore ("You've got me so I can't see my own face.") "I know what's on your mind, but it's not what you think it is." She could think he only wants her for her physical beauty, where he really is one of the few who see her amazing qualities, that far surpass her beauty, beautiful though she is. The only other line is "You've got me so I'm crazy with disgrace" which could mean that he feels embarassed to be chasing after a girl like this. The neat thing about this song is that listening to it is sort of like running on a treadmill, it repeats over and over again, but it never really feels all that redundant when you're listening to it.

I shall now analyze every single Oingo Boingo song ever:

It is a political commentary with religious references and mentions drugs. It is all at once depressing yet funny and uplifting, with hints towards chaos and sexuality, along with subtle homosexual undertones. It is all at once a story and a rant, strung together with good rythms and a catchy, memorable, powerful chorus.

....and THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is every Oingo Boingo song ever written.

So that's what Reptiles and Samurai mean, thank you very much.
And return of the dead man instrumentals.

No, some songs are just for fun I agree. I mean, I'm not going to go out of my way to analyze reptiles and samurai. And every boingo album contains that though. change song with album and you got a gold.

I STILL don't get Reptiles And Samurai. It's an awsome song, and it's obviously about...well, reptiles and samurai.

Okay, here goeth me on a Boingo rant:

"Tough As Nails" <-- Great song. Wonderful horns. Brilliant vocals.
My take on it? It's about a guy that everyone loves because they think he's all that; that he's the type of guy everybody either wants to be like or be with ("Mr. Macho loves his women with such dedication / Second only to his car that drives as fast as light..."). BUT - when he gets home, he's just this normal guy with problems and everything. He has stuff to deal with too, just like everybody else. ("Walking round and round in circles / waking up in a cold sweat / Falling down a stairway and the tv dinner's not done yet / smash a window / crash a car and / buy a pair of leather shoes / take a sweetheart to a movie / cash a check and pay some dues...") All being summed up by the sarcastic and almost mocking line: "He's such a live wire..."
