User ImageThe autumn wind was blowing hard that day and Laughing Shadows had grown frustrated while trying to create her new bed in the forest. It was her favorite place to be, but even the trees were not sheltering her from the wind as well as she would have liked. And so the young doe set out for a new place to stay, at least during the winter months. A cave would be most suitable she suspected, so she headed North to where she thought she might find some.

Along the way the young doe and her familiar, Contrast, looked for flowers and things she might use to decorate her new home. The brightly colored wild lynx didn't seem to care too much for hunting for the proper fauna, but he did it anyway because it made Laughing Shadows smile. Slowly but surely they gathered a couple mouthfuls of flowers each and made the trek towards where some caves might lie. Upon finding some, a great debate began between the two on which one they should take as their home. A debate that let their flowers fall from their mouths only to take to the sky and fly through the air.

Laughing Shadows was suddenly torn between chasing after her flowers and winning the debate with Contrast and so stood stupidly in between both places she wanted to be, glowering at her lynx, the caves, and the flowers alternately. What was a doe to do when her decorations flew off and her lynx suggested a small cave as opposed to the biggest one they could find?

What the heck is that thing? It was flying on the wind and far too colorful to be a leaf...so Bite reached out her neck to catch it in her teeth. It was a flower clearly picked and not ripped out by the wind. It smell like doe.

Entirely too curious for her own good bite turned out in a circle to search for the source of the smell. She caught it, faintly off to slight north and began to trot off in that direction. Her only real thought was to ask why one would let a flower you'd spent so much time gathering fly off in the wind...despite the fact that bite didn't care much for flowers herself.

It didn't take long for Laughing Shadows' preference for flowers to win out over her stubbornness in winning and argument and so she quickly flew after the flowers trying to collect them from the air. Jumping and grabbing the flowers in mid-air hardly worked at all as each one caught flew away when she went for the next one. More than a little exasperated with herself, she stomped after them until she saw a doe trotting her way.

The young doe's eyes grew wide as she caught sight of a beautiful purple doe clutching a flower much like the ones she was chasing. The argument with her familiar and loss of her decorations momentarily forgotten she put on a pleasant smile and trotted up to the other doe. She stopped a couple kimeti lengths away and nodded her head in friendly greeting, "Hello there!"

Her glowing eyes flickered to the flower and she gave an almost sheepish laugh, "Sorry about the flying flowers...I kind of dropped them..." Laughing Shadows dipper her head in apology before a sudden realization popped into her head. She had never met this doe before and it was rude of her to have not offered up her name. "I'm laughing Shadows. What's your name?"

Bite raised a brow at the pleasant greeting and kept her voice flat and her face expressionless. "This is yours right?" She asked with her teeth still clenched around the flower. Thought that was obvious now with the odd collection of other bright dots and swatches now caught in various trees and bushes around the area. "It is rather unwise to pick flowers in this weather. But I think you figured that out."

She walked passed the drab gray doe into the large cave several yards behind her to deposit the flower on the floor where the wind wouldn't get it. She walked back out and eyed Contrast. "You should have taken cover before you put down the flowers. There is nothin wrong with this cave." She paused and looked at one of the trees. "I'll help you get the flowers...if you let me borrow your lynx for a hunt. It's rather a lot easier to find food for him than for me." She paused, realizing she'd diseviced herself with a put down. "Don't get me wrong, I do well on my own. But he'd be helpful and I can clearly get those flowers easier than you can." Dumb chirt.

To prove this Bite walked to the near tree and was quickly up in the branches snatching three of the flowers and making herself seem rather like she had paws instead of hooves.

The young doe nodded her head at the question, though her own eyes turned curious at the fact the other doe seemed to not be very friendly. She quickly chalked it up to the fact that the doe was speaking through a flower and so shrugged off her initial impression of the purple doe. Laughing Shadows grinned sheepishly at the statement and shrugged her shoulders in response. "I don't think it was so much the wind that made me lose them as it is I opened my mouth rather than keeping it shut." Not far behind her she could hear what could only have been a snicker from her lynx and she dipped her head just a little, knowing full well that that was something her familiar would have said had she not just said it herself.

The lynx, who at this point still had the flowers kept well in his mouth merely glowered at the purple doe as she strutted past him. Not wanting to miss anything, he quickly moved to deposit his own flowers in a neat little pile before slinking up to Laughing Shadows and standing near to her shoulder. The appearance he gave off was that he was both her guardian and protector and had no intention of allowing anyone to cause a problem. With a toss of his head, he blew air out of his nostril in a sound of disbelief and disagreement at the purple doe. His body language made it clear he didn't really appreciate her tone of voice as she spoke, though Laughing Shadows was quick to respond, "Well, its not really up to me if he helps you hunt."

She gestured towards him with her head, looking vaguely surprised at how close he was before shrugging, "Contrast here has a mind of his own. He wanted me to find a smaller cave that would have been easier to keep warm with just two bodies." Laughing Shadows sighed and glanced back at the large cave, which could be decorated so well if only the weather would comply, "And I guess he has a point. But you'd have to ask him if he'd hunt with you." It was obvious by her tone of voice, however, that she didn't agree with him.

Her eyes grew wide as she watched as the other doe neatly climbed the tree and grabbed some of her flowers she'd collected. Unable to resist the excitement that grew inside of her, she pranced around happily, clearly now she could get those flowers quicker than having to find and re-pick them all! But only if Contrast agreed...and his yellow eyes had the look of metal to them as he simply stared at the other doe and her clambering ways. He had given no indication as of yet if he would help or not, though he had nudged gently against Laughing Shadows' shoulder when he caught on to how badly she wanted him to help.

She snorted as she hoped back down out of the tree. "Perhaps you need to learn to keep your mouth closed in general?" She eyed Contrast and decided the look it his eyes was too loyal and good for her liking. "Look, I don't care if he helps me or not, but I don't work for free. I'm not that kind of doe darling. If you can think of a way to repay me I'll get the flowers. And choose the larger cave. You'll crush the flowers in the smaller one." She tottered over to another tree and contemplated the flowers stuck in it and which limbs to jump to get them. This was becoming amusing, a game of come and get me. But she wouldn't admit this to the happily little drab doe and her dumb animal.

Laughing Shadows couldn't help but snicker as the other doe came back down from the tree and commented on her keeping her mouth shut. With a gentle shrug of her shoulders she gave no verbal answer - she didn't really think the statement warranted one. Especially not since it seemed the doe was trying to bait her, and Laughing Shadows was determined to not fall for it if she could help it.

Contrast stretched his fore legs out and dug his long and sharp claws into the Earth as the doe spoke again and gave a guttural laughing sound. He knew he was being ignored and Laughing Shadows gave another shrug and a toothy grin, "Like I said. I can't answer for him. If you want his help, you would have to ask him."

She bobbed her head at him to indicate who exactly was needing to be asked, for she wasn't about to speak for her familiar. That was one thing Laughing Shadows had learned quickly in their relationship. Let the lynx speak his own mind in his own way. Otherwise he might try to sharpen his claws on something of her's. Laughing Shadows smiled softly as the other doe went to another tree and waited patiently to see if the doe would catch on. Contrast would probably help if asked - but he wasn't about to if he wasn't. Not even if he was indirectly asked to help.

Bite turned and rolled her eyes. She fully knew where the lynx was and she'd gotten the part about asking him...she just didn't think he was up for it...but she played along anyway. She turned her gaze directly to Contrast and looked straight into his eyes as she stepped a few steps closer. "I don't think you would help me would you darlin'. You like her and you're very loyal to her. God knows why but you wont be budged. But if you like your silly plant eater that's fine with me. I just thought perhaps I'd be nice for once and be helpful. And look what it gets me. I've got your fur up there Mr. Lynx just by lookin at cha. Can't blame you though. I am trouble. Are you as nimble as I am? Can you get the flowers for her? Do you need me? Or can you think of a way to repay me." Perhaps you're smarter than the silly doe over there who opens her mouth in high wind. She smiled at him in what she hoped was a winning manner...perhaps it came off as a tad bit of a snarl.

Contrast's eyes stared intently at the young doe as she spoke to him and a smirk could be seen tugging at his lips the whole time. She was clearly misinterpreting his opinions on things and he found it more than a little amusing. Just because he refused to help her when she hadn't even asked him, didn't really mean a thing. The doe's obvious dislike for his young charge didn't put him at ease, either, and his teeth showed as he growled just a little at her tone. While Laughing Shadows was still young - she was certainly not stupid. Naive, perhaps, but that was it.

With a languid stretch, he smiled at the doe as he walked past her. His claws came out and he quickly ran up the tree's side, his claws leaving dents in the bark the whole way up and strolled out across a limb as he glanced back down at the two does. Laughing Shadows pranced with joy that he could also climb up in the trees and her eyes quickly flitted over to the flowers caught within its leaves. Contrast knew what she wanted, but he didn't really see the point in fixing her mess for her and instead made a quick sprint up a couple more branches to grab a squirrel that had made a move and caught his eye.

A glint of amusement grew in his eye as he ended the thing's life with a swift shake of his head and then tossed it down at the purple doe's feet. The lynx hopped down to the branch he'd been at before, which let loose the flower tucked within it as it floated back down to the ground and was picked up once more by the wind. Laughing Shadows made a sound of annoyance that he would do that to her and trotted up to the tree to glare up at him. Contrast ignored her, however, and grabbed another flower before hopping down lightly and strolling back past the purple doe.

With a pointed glance he set the flower on the ground as soon as Laughing Shadows had come back before sitting on the dirt, with his tail twitching in amusement. He could help Laughing Shadows if he wanted and he could also help the other one hunt for meat, if he wanted. It was just more amusing for him to stand back and watch the two go back and forth.
