The land was changing again. The heat of the summer was slowly being washed away by the cool crisp days of autumn. The nights steadily grew longer while the light of the sun spent less time warming the Earth. The leaves of trees had begun their magnificent deaths setting the trees ablaze with colors that stood out against the deep green that the needled varieties still held. The scent of decaying leaves filled the air with a pungent scent but that was not what had the young kirin mare swaying uneasily on her hooves. Her golden eyes were fixated on the trees, yes, but not on their beautiful leaves. There was another masterpiece to behold painted on the trunks.

At the foot of the trees there was a small doe lying in a crimson pool of her own life force. Something had slaughtered the poor creature and it did not look like it had been done for anything more than sport. Sabella didn’t know what was causing it but something about the sight of the poor creature was making her feel faint. The scent wafting off of the red liquid made her feel nauseated. She wanted to run but her legs refused to obey her commands. Instead they chose to leave her rooted to the spot to let her drain away quietly.

Her lips parted as she silently mouthed a single word, “help.”

A heavy, impatient sigh dropped like a small boulder in the heart of the main land woods. The few birds that had remained in their homes instead of migrating to warmer climates closed their beaks for a few moments as a bizarre trio strolled past. A mare with pink hair and black wings strolled just a few paces ahead of a pale mare with lion’s tail. Soaring in front of the mares was a large crow with horns growing from its brown head. The one who had sighed ruffled her wings and scowled. “What’re we doin’ all the way out here again?” She asked clearly irritated. This was not her idea of a good time. There were things she needed to get done. Sure she’d told her punky little friend that it was her day off but that didn’t mean she wanted to spend the day trekking out into the middle of nowhere. She wanted to sleep in and then make some preparations for tomorrow’s heist…not get woken up at dawn because of some bird.

The aforementioned bird cackled from the air before swooping down to land on the pale mare’s back. After many moons of doing this a scarred patch had appeared on his friend’s back and she no longer flinched when his talons connected. “We are looking for yumyums.” He said with a bob of his head. “Nasties come through here at night, leave many yumyums behind.” He clicked his beak a few times before beating his wings hard to take off again.

Well used to this sort of treatment the mare partner of the bird hardly reacted. She nodded her head to agree with him. The purpose of the trip was indeed to feed her friend and he enjoyed fresh kills the most. When the bird took off she bowed her head to avoid getting caught by his wings. She’d let that happen once before and it was not an experience she was eager to relive. Once her friend was airborne once more she straightened her head and feeling eyes on her she turned to look at the winged mare. “Yes…boss?” It was what her bird said Carmine should be referred as. The blue marked mare didn’t really understand it.

As she understood it following her around and helping her with her work was something that friends did. What exactly was a boss anyway?

Carmine cringed visibly. Of all the names that the mare called Wolf could have chosen for her and she settled on ‘boss.’ While it didn’t seem to be a conditioned reflex yet the thief got the feeling that it wouldn’t be too terribly long before it became habit. It was best to n** bad habits in the bud or she was in for troublesome trips down memory lane every time she talked to the girl. “Don’t call me boss…alright?” She muttered turning her gaze back to the path in front of her. She still had nightmares about that little incident with the Hatter.

Forcing those memories to the back of her mind she scanned the area. “Hey…where’d your bird go?” She asked not seeing the feathered headache anywhere.

Wolf frowned. Carmine didn’t want to be called boss? Well that put her in a bit of a tight spot. She couldn’t listen to both Raven and Carmine. She’d known Raven the longest and it was always said that you should listen to friends. However, Raven had said to listen to their boss which was Carmine but Carmine did not want to be ‘boss’ so where did that leave her.

If she had been allowed Wolf would have continued to ponder over the situation until the sun kissed the earth. Luckily Carmine was quite adept at shattering silence and stopping thoughts. Freed from her turbulent thoughts the short maned mare glanced around the area. Her friend was right. Raven was no where in sight. “Found food…” She said matter-of-factly. It was the only sensible reason for why he would suddenly vanish.

Raven had indeed located his breakfast. It was a pretty little doe that appeared to be mostly untouched. For him it would have been perfect if not for the weird one horned scaly deer standing by it. He clacked his beak unhappily but fluttered down to land on the carcass possessively anyway. “S’not comin back.” He cackled hopping around on it watching the scaled creature closely. She wasn’t really moving but her whole body shook like a stubborn leaf in autumn winds. “Y’should leave.” He was not really a patient bird especially not when he was hungry. He’d given her warning and that was the end of that. Without further conversation he bobbed his head down and began to take his fill of the dead creature not paying attention to anything else.

The shock from seeing the bird fly in almost startled her from her post. It didn’t seem to be enough though. Her legs still didn’t move. Even when she was ordered to leave she didn’t budge. It was so unlike her. She was sure to be scolded for ignoring orders and her family would be forced to live with their insubordinate daughter’s shame. The thought of inflicting such things on her family pained her to no end but still she stood on the spot even though she was desperately wishing to lie down.

As the carrion bird began to eat that desire went away as the contents of her stomach found themselves on the ground. Now she just wanted to fade away and it almost felt like that was what she was doing. Tears began to pool in her eyes though whether it was because of her physical state or the pity she felt for the deer she didn’t know. All she did know was that she could hear voices approaching and their footsteps.

Wolf found her friend easily enough. The scent of blood was something she’d grown familiar with over time. It was the easiest way to find food for her bird and often times the easiest way to find her bird. She made her way into the small clearing and surveyed the scene with emotionless eyes. There was a dead animal by a tree. Her friend was eating the dead animal. Across the way there was a small creature watching. By her feet was a small puddle of stomach contents, presumably the watcher’s. The watcher also seemed to be crying.

Wolf tilted her head to one side in wonder. Why was she crying? Without trying to find an answer she turned her head and called out into the woods behind her. “He’s over here Boss! There is company too.”

Carmine was really beginning to hate the whole stupid day. She could live with an early wake up call and maybe with a little reward the walk in the woods would be fine. Going on a wild crow chase was not something that could easily be made up for. She trailed Wolf very slowly at first and then stopped moving all together as a thought occurred to her. If the bird was after food and had found food then that meant she really didn’t want to go anywhere near it. Maybe Wolf was freak enough to be completely calm around dead things but hanging out by corpses was not on Carmine’s list of things to do.

When Wolf called out to her, aside from gritting her teeth, she didn’t move. She hadn’t had any plans on moving either especially not when it was announced that there was company. Carmine scrunched her face up praying that she hadn’t just heard what she thought she did. Company around a corpse couldn’t be a good thing. The bird wasn’t screeching though and while Wolf wasn’t smart enough to high tail it when something bigger showed up she knew that Raven was. Great. That meant she had to go check it out.

“D’ya always have t’find stuff in places I don’t wanna go?” Carmine groaned to voice her protest over the situation. Still she dragged her feet over towards the ragtag pair she’d stumbled upon one day. What she saw caused her brain to cease functioning for a moment. When it started again she still gaped. “Holy s**t…that’s a kirin…”

The kirin mare slowly turned her head to look at the newcomers. There was one that resembled a kind quite familiar to her clan. The unicorns, they passed through the mountains often enough and were no strangers in her herd. They were often welcomed like old family and not with false smiles that others sometimes received. Though this one seemed to only be part unicorn. Sabella found she rather disliked how calm she seemed to be around the body and the bird.

The other was considerably more rare. Winged breeds didn't often bother to take the land paths over the range. For them it would be a waste of time naturally as it would be easier to just ride the winds over the peaks. It didn't take her very long to decide that she liked the long haired one less than the uni-cross. She was inappropriate and loud. The outside world was very strange indeed to let a mare get away with having such a big mouth.

Even if she had been able to voice her criticisms of the two she wouldn't have. Though such things hardly mattered at the moment. It was beginning to feel like she was going to pass out at any second. "P...p-please...he...help..." She whispered.

Wolf was confused. Carmine knew something that she didn't. Not only was that a rare occurrence but whatever it was that she knew had stopped their Boss's complaining dead in it's tracks. That almost never happened.

With a twitch of her tail she took a few steps closer to the winged mare to satisfy her curiosity. "Boss...what is a kirin?" She asked still watching the dark maned mare closely. She couldn't really see anything special excepting the fact that her horn looked like it had been split by lightning. That and she seemed to be wearing the scales of some lizard that was likely roaming the world naked now.

As the lizard skin stealing mare spoke Wolf's ears twitched. Her expression didn't change in the slightest. "And why does it want help?" What a strange creature it was.

Raven stopped eating for a moment to stare at the scaly mare. She was odder than Wolf. He clicked his beak a few times before hopping around on the carcass to find new footing and turn his back on the one Boss called a kirin. "Help yerself." He muttered before going back to what he did best, eat. He didn't care what she was. He didn't want to help her. She hadn't done anything for him. He owed her no favors.

She needed help? Carmine frowned slightly. She wasn't really in the business of performing charity acts. It wasn't that she had no heart it was just that she couldn't see a reason to help out every person with a sob story that came her way. If she did that she'd never have any time for her work. Unfortunately for this mare 'please help' was just not convincing enough to get the thief's aide.

She was all but prepared to side with the bird before a thought crossed her mind. Kirin were extremely rare and often times weren't seen in the main lands. This mare also seemed to be wearing some valuables quite casually. If she was in trouble, Carmine was beginning to get the feeling that helping her might actually be beneficial after all.

"Geez you guys don't be so cold!" With a magnificent show she ruffled her wings and trotted over to the kirin girl with a pitying look. "Can't you see yer makin the poor thing sick ya stupid bird?" She accused harshly. Unfurling one feathered wing she stepped around to the mare's side and draped the feathered appendage over her back. "Wolf, you'n'her are practically family. Don'tcha see the resemblance?" She nudged the kirin mare gently to give her a little shake. "So if yer gonna call me Boss yer gonna do what I say right? So get yer butt over here and support her other side would ya?"

Then with an immediate shift in tone she looked back to the black haired mare. "Don't you worry, we're gonna get you nice'n'safe."

Raven shot their boss a nasty look over his shoulder as she accused him of causing this trouble. "Not my fault. She was like that when I got here..." He muttered darkly before pulling on last strip of flesh free from his meal. He swallowed it quickly and with much satisfaction. Finally feeling the ache in his belly disperse he hopped away from the dead deer before flying up into the branches of a tree. He wasn't going to hang around if their Boss was going to be so bossy about dumb things. He wasn't there to help people. He was there to act as a look out in the day and a distraction at night. "Have fun with sicky there!" He called down to his 'colleagues' before taking to the skies and soaring off to their usual hangout. They could have 'fun' with that if they wanted but he intended to enjoy the rest of the day.

Wolf only stared at Carmine blankly for a while after her friend flew off. She was not entirely sure that their Boss was completely right in the head at the moment. She had never been quite so charming to female strangers before. While it was completely common for the crimson marked mare to cozy up to various male companions almost on a nightly basis it was weird to see her being so buddy buddy with another girl. She didn't even act that friendly with Wolf. In fact Wolf had a hypothesis that Carmine only hung around with her at all because she did not act or look particularly feminine despite her smaller than average frame.

Still, she was not about to question the mare's motives for offering aide. It was none of Wolf's business if Carmine's intentions were what others were considered pure. Knowing the mare they probably weren't and that didn't bother Wolf in the slightest. Nothing concerning morals was truly black and white for the tan mare.

"I do not see the resemblance Boss..." She said as she carefully picked her way across the clearing to stand at the other side of the scaled mare. If Carmine wanted something done it would get done. It was as simple as that.
