Kele was finally old enough to wander outside of his mother's den. The big ol' world outside was a bit frightening to the meek little boy, but the adventurer in him demanded to be set free so that he might explore. Smaller than his sisters, Kele was undoubtedly his mothers son; the family resemblance was undoubtedly strong. Of course, he was a boy, and therefore was doomed to a less-than-favored status. He was a bit oblivious to the fact, idolizing his mother reverently.
He was the last one out of the den, eyes wide as they took in all his surroundings. Kele was excited to be set free. He could only take so much squabbling between his sisters, and part of him craved a bit of solitude.

Kepo was feeling a little bit grumpy. Dikeledi had kicked him out of HIS rightful den over and over again since she'd had her cubs. He hadn't even been inside since the new pups were nothing more than grubby little wads of hair. From his post of constant vigilance outside the den, he'd overheard his boring 'mom' chatting with Dikeledi about the cubs, and he knew that they were almost ready to be up and moving about again.
Finally, he would be able to have Dikeledi back. She would dump the brats on the males to take care of and then Kepo would have Her back.
Everything was going to be wonderful.
Kepo hung back as the rest of the family wandered out, keeping his eyes on Dikeledi as she strutted off, glancing dismissively at her two daughters. A yellow one and a green one. Bluh. Whatever.
The little brown male stepped forward to sidle into line behind Dikeledi himself, and nearly tripped over something else.
The most horrible thing he had ever seen.
A little brown male with Dikeledi's pink striping, he looked even more like Dikeledi than Kepo himself.
Kepo let out an ungodly warbling wail of horror and dismay.

If there was one thing that Kele knew, it was that Dikeledi was his mother. Despite the fact that he was but a lowly male, he was still the Queen's son, and that brought with it some arrogance, even to one so young as Kele. With an almost demeaning glance at the larger striped male, Kele snapped, "Watch out! You almost stepped on m'foot!" Teeth were bared and eyes flashed. Kele might be meek and submissive to his mama and his sisters, but another male? Never. Not in a million years would he bow down to a stupid striped male.
Dismissing the other pup with a threatening growl, Kele hurried after his mama and sisters. Once Dikeledi gave permission for them to run off on their own, Kele would be exploring in the blink of an eye.

Had that little scrubby b*****d actually bared his teeth at Kepo? The black-striped male's eyes bulged in utter shock and horror. And growled? And dismissed him like he was a cur like Bekeli?
No. No. This couldn't be happening. It was a terrible dream.
Kepo wanted to run screaming to Dikeledi about the obnoxious little male, but somewhere in his tiny warped mind he knew that she would probably just holler at the both of them and continue walking away. She didn't much care about male pups squabbling.
Swelling up with righteous wrath, Kepo scampered after the hyena he now hated even more than smelly Bekeli. He plopped himself down right in front of the smaller pup, glaring down at him. "Dontchoo growl at me you nasty lil turd. I'm bigger'n you."

Well, he hadn't expected that to happen.
With a furious scowl and an almost regal lift of his paw, Kele moved to strike the stupid hyena that had cut him off. Didn't this stupidface know who Kele was? Kele was Dikeledi's SON! You didn't just plot your ugly face down in front of the son of the Queen and not expect retribution. In Kele's mind, this ugly brown jerk deserved whatever he had coming to him. Kele also realized that his mother likely wouldn't come to his rescue, and that he would have to defend himself from this ugly brown hyena.
Whether his swing was a hit or a miss, Kele didn't care. He didn't want strangers thinking they could push or shove him around just because he was little. He was the QUEEN'S son. Nobody would push him around!

Oh, please. Kepo hated this idiotic spawn more and more with every second. If only he was just a bit bigger, he could throw this horrible baby down in the ditch where he'd tricked Bekeli and watch him cry. Kepo didn't move out of the way when the pink male slapped at him, scornful of the attack.
The other cub was smaller, but Kepo was pretty small himself. Ow! It didn't hurt too badly, but it was an assault on his dignity! His fur puffed out like an angry cat at the smack, growling furiously at the nasty little monster.
"If you hit me I'm gonna tell and you're gonna be in trouble 'cause I'm Dikeledi's favorite," Kepo hissed. "I'm probly even a girl. You're nothing but a turd." He swatted at the other pup with his paw.

What? Whoa whoa whoa.
Was this stupid hyena serious?
Kele laughed. He outright laughed in the striped hyena's face. Did he really think that he was Dikeledi's favorite? And he thought that he was a girl?! He laughed until it started to hurt and then he laughed some more, ignoring the other's swat with his paw.
Kele stopped laughing when tears dampened the corners of his eyes and his sides ached and he couldn't breathe right. "You're dumb!" That was all he could say before he broke out into another peal of laughter, the sounds turning to shrieks as he blatantly laughed in Kepo's face.

Kepo couldn't take the laughter, couldn't take the disrespect. His little brain snapped, and the pup saw red.
He didn't care if he got yelled at, he was going to KILL this noxious brat. Surely no one would miss him.
With a shrill growl of fury, Kepo charged at the other hyena, seeking to crush him under his (slightly) superior weight and beat the snot out of him.

Kele was squished under the slightly heavier body of Kepo, and though the breath was squished out of him, he couldn't stop laughing. It wasn't until he REALLY couldn't breathe that Kele started shrieking in fury, and even went so far as to clasp his sharp little pointy puppy teeth deep into Kepo's ear. Of course, it was hard to see from behind the tears of laughter that dampened his eyes, but he wasn't going down without a fight!

Laughing! Laughing still! Kepo growled, focusing on crushing the life out of the horrible pup ... until that horrible pup started squealing like a demon and actually sank his teeth into Kepo's sensitive ear. Kepo let out a shriek of his own, flailing on top of the smaller pup. If he let up, he could get his ear back, but the other hyena would be free!
Well, Kepo couldn't just rip free. He might tear his ear and mar his handsomeness. He settled on a compromise - he got up so that the other hyena would have to fight harder to maintain his grip on Kepo's ear, and he snatched for the other hyena's ear himself, pointy teeth flashing.

"Ouch!" Kele screamed, hoping to draw the attention of his mother but in doing so he released the other's ear. "Lemmeego lemmeego! MAMA! MAMA!" This was truly the worst day ever. His first day out of the den and here he was being EATEN by a stranger! If it was going to always be this dangerous out here, Kele never wanted to leave his home again!
His screams turned to frantic shrieks as he intermittently tried to sink his teeth into the other hyena's legs. Teeth clacked and snapped as he sought to bite onto something -- anything -- that would get his ear released.

Kepo let out his own shrill scream of pain as the other cub bit him on the legs, releasing his dreadful enemy's ear. Not to be outdone by Kele's cries for Dikeledi, Kepo added his own to the chorus. "Auntie! AUNTIE!" He wailed, scrabbling furiously with the other cub.
Dikeledi hadn't paid much mind to her son and her nephew, more interested in showing off her two clever daughters. She'd assumed that Kele would go off with Kepo somewhere and do whatever it was male cubs did. Torture Bekeli, maybe. Their high pitched squealing finally caught her attention, though, and she turned and marched back to the pair.
Pathetic. The two male cubs looked even more alike as they thrashed and scuffled with each other on the ground. Dikeledi sighed. Kepo was the most irritating brat out of all Bahari's brood, and unfortunately Kele was shaping up to be just as awful. The two male cubs that looked most like her seemed to have her attitude and their fathers' brains.
She stuck a paw between the two of them and forcefully pushed the wailing pups apart. "Behave!" She snapped. "Quiet, both of you!"

Kele didn't like getting reprimanded by his mama, but he couldn't stop the smuggest little bratty smile from creeping across his features. Sure, he might've gotten in trouble, but so had the terrible pup that seemed intent on ripping his ear off. What a jerk.
With a huff, Kele rose and almost regally dusted himself off. He didn't give a second glance to the worthless pup that had nearly trampled him into the ground like an elephant. Nose in the air and tail raised high, he peered at the other striped hyena that had previously been taunting him with names like 'turd'.
"This is my mama," Kele said quite matter-of-factly, but not above a whisper should Dikeledi overhear and reprimand him once more. He wasn't going to put up with any crap from some no-name worthless male that was trying to get in his mothers good graces.
