Harkin grumbled. He had been let into the pride, it was true, but he was worthless until he won a duel. He knew he had the right stuff, but no one was giving him a chance! Which left only one choice. He would go seek out a fight. He had to prove that he belonged here, that he was just as tough as any of the Firekin.
Which was why he had arranged a fight with Kosuke. Harkin sort of got the impression that the big Firekin almost didn't regard him as a threat. But he'd show him! A mischievous smile on his muzzle, Harkin planned to sneak up on the bigger male.
Spotting Kosuke, Harkin roared his challenge. He waited a moment, so that Kosuke wouldn't be taken completely by surprise-that wouldn't have been very fair-then charged. He landed a fair blow to his side, his forepaw striking thick fur. "I'm gonna earn my place here, Kosuke!" he said, a determined glint in his eyes. "I'm as good as anyone, and I'll prove it!"

He'd been expecting it for a bit now. The Firekin flicked his ears, before turning towards the challenger. While he'd been expecting the other, though, he hadn't expected such... FORCE. The red lion stumbled, glaring up at the other. "I will not LOSE to a ROGUE..." Not easily, anyway. Picking himself up, he charged at the other lion, only to dodge back. Sometimes, scare tactics could work in one's favor.

Harkin smirked. "I might be a Rogue for now, but not for long. Not after this match!" He was pleasantly surprised at the expression on the red lion's face. Clearly he had proved to be tougher than he looked already. His gloatingly happy expression lasted only a moment, for Kosuke leaped at him. It was only a feint, but it spooked Harkin well enough that he flinched back.
Angry at his own weakness, Harkin glared back at Kosuke. "I'm not even worth a hit to you?" His eyes narrowed. There was no point to this if Kosuke wasn't going to take him seriously. "Don't go easy on me, Kosuke," he growled.

"All rogues are worthy of hits!" He charged again, this time slamming his shoulder against the rogue. "When I was a cub, lions like you were kept as slaves! Are you lion enough to live here?!" He jumped away, smirking back at the other lion. "Or are you no better than the rogues who are afraid to come into the desert?"

Harkin grimaced as Kosuke's heavy shoulder crunched into his body. "Lions like me, eh?" he sputtered. "I am lion enough to cross the desert and live to tell the tale, and I'm tough enough to earn my right to stay!" He declared fiercely.
Taking a leaf out of Kosuke's book, Harkin feinted a charge, leaping towards the big male and skidding sand over his fiery coat. Panting, he leaped back with a wry grin. "But the slaves must have been freed, Kosuke, for there are no more. And lions such as myself can enter the pride without fear of bondage. And if those before me have proved themselves worthy, then so can I."

Kosuke let out a growl, ears pressed into his mane as he glared at the other lion. He wouldn't fall for the bluff, though, as he charged at Harkin. When he felt his body make contact, he let out a satisfied roar. "You're no better than the other rogues who have tried and failed!"

"Wanna bet?" Harkin roared, recovering from the blow and lunging forward to slam his whole frame against the bigger lion in a mighty head-butt. The force of impact sent his bones rattling, but it was worth it to know he had scored a hit. "I cannot fail. This is what I was born for!"

Kosuke stumbled back, collapsing into the sand. As he struggled up, he glared at the other lion. "You... Are very... Stubborn..." Getting up, he shook the sand from his bruised body. "Others crumple and run when they've had to face me, but you... You refuse to give up!" Mustering his strength, the red lion charged, only to miss. He could feel the air himself as he passed right by the other, landing in the sand behind him.

Harkin himself was weary. His bones ached, and he was barely aware of Kosuke's missed charge. He gathered the last of his strength and swiped a forepaw at his opponent, but his blow merely swished through the air and landed harmlessly in the sand with a dull thud. "It's all I've got," he admitted through choking breaths, "stubbornness and a bit of strength. But it's pulled me through alright so far."

As he rose to his paws, Kosuke looked at Harkin, watching the other lion. After he'd caught his breath, he swallowed, then bowed his head. "I think... Your stubbornness... Has paid off." He turned full-body to the other lion, lifting his head. "Rogue-blood you may be, but in title... I'd wager you're now Firekin. This doesn't mean I'll treat you nicer, though, because I still hold fast to the old ways and valuing lions of the Blood over rogue-bloods." He then bowed slightly, "Welcome home."

Harkin stood as well, ignoring the exhaustion burning his veins. "I wouldn't expect you to," he said with a grin. "That wouldn't be any fun, now would it?" He looked over the sun-beaten sand. He returned the bow with as much dignity as he could muster. "It's good to be home." He said, his heart filling with pride at the fierce land where he now belonged.
