We must do our best to find some, Mine, Pipith told his rider as they glided out. Would that not be wonderful? They will see how good we are, even if we are new. As with everything, the bronze was making this into some sort of competition, and insisting that they win it.

It's very hard to find, Pip, you know that. Don't get upset if we don't find any, Set'al cautioned. His interests lay mainly in seeing more of their new home, since their chances of actually finding this special herb were slim.

Then this will have been practice, and we will look again until we find some. And again, if we have to.

And if we run into another dragon, you'd better be nice. This was a warning given not in case the other was Atypical, but in case it turned out to be another bronze. Pipith's competitive nature was at its worst when dragons of his same color were involved. He had to be better, because they were inevitably larger. Even if they didn't rub it in his face, even if they were as nice as could be, it bothered him terribly that he didn't measure up.

Whatever passed for Fate on Pern was apparently smiling on the competitive, tiny Bronze, since as it happened, the only other dragon in the area was a brown, also on the small side of his color.

The little dragon was quite vocal, even in flight, as though he were serenading the area that he and his rider were searching, trying to coax the plants out of hiding.

Hello Hello! Linnaeth hailed the bronze, reminded by his rider that it never hurt to be polite, especially to bronzes. S'in-mine says to say hello, and that if it's alright by you, since you outrank us, we were thinking to look for Mystweed. If not, he says we can look elsewhere, but he hopes you won't say it's not since we aren't allowed to go Between.

You didn't have to tell him the last part, Linnaeth... S'in's sigh was lost out loud, but the idea still carried to his partner.

Well, it's true, besides maybe he'll agree. The brown pointed out. He didn't like the idea that they might be told to leave, though it wasn't -as- bad as if, say, they'd been asked to leave someplace that was really -theirs-.

The brown circled the area at a respectful distance, still giving an impressive chorus of noises, some of which even resembled snippets of this or that song from around the weyr, though these snippets were short, since the vocal brown didn't have the memory to hold the whole thing in his head for long.

That was...different. Pipith certainly had his vocal moments, but he didn't sing to himself! It was actually sort of cute, though, Set'al thought.

They say 'Hello,' Mine. The rider is S'in, and they are looking for the plant too, but they'll go somewhere else if we want, except they can't go Between yet so they'd rather not. What would you like me to tell them? The bronze didn't have a strong preference one way or the other - it was just a young brown, after all, and he was polite. Although they would have to share credit if they found something...

Introduce us, and tell them we can look together. Set'al, for his part, was eager to meet more people, especially riders, and gave a friendly wave.

Hello! Pipith replied obligingly. I am Pipith, and Mine is Set'al. He says you can look with us, if you want.

S'in says we appreciate it, Pipith and Set'al. So do I! Linnaeth answered back, winging closer for a better look now that it had been determined that territoriality wasn't an issue.

S'in gave a brief wave of acknowledgment as they drew closer, though there wasn't a lot of point in trying to shout conversation on a moving dragon.

Great, now we'll have a search partner. S'in was pleased by this. The idea of sharing the glory of whatever they found didn't bother him, since he wasn't a limelight seeker.

The territory out here was dangerous, even with Linnaeth, and it would have been a very ironic footnote in the scrolls had he and his partner been lost while searching for an herb that was supposed to help bring more dragons into the world. Ironic didn't really describe how S'in planned to be remembered.

What's your name? the small bronze inquired, before relaying a question from His, And has Yours seen a good place to look? We're new, so we do not know the land well. In other words, they were guessing, but Pipith wasn't going to put it that way!

Set'al was also content to let the dragons take care of the conversation for now; they could talk at more length, without relays, once they'd settled on a spot and landed.

I am Linnaeth! I forgot to mention, didn't I? The small brown chirped swooping lazily, his rider keeping as low a profile as possible on his partners neck, apparently more or less not interested in testing the riding leathers versus the wind.

S'in says there may be some clearings and groves to check a little further out, but we're going by word of mouth. It's worth a look...

The dragon glanced ahead where breaks seemed to indicate stretches where the land was more open, and it seemed plausible that wilder animals might be grazing.

S'in thinks if other animals graze there, maybe they're finding and eating Mistweed also.

The Southern-born dragon consulted with his chosen, who was quick to agree with the younger rider's reasoning. Mine says we should try that, then. Word of mouth was better than pure guesswork, and Pipith was relatively willing to cede to the Weyrlings' judgement. Things might have been different if it were a dragon of Pip's own age and color, but Linnaeth didn't qualify as competition. We will follow you.

Linnaeth was clearly pleased by this, swooping ahead with another chorus of curious noises.

We will lead then! Linnaeth was quite happy to oblige, and looked like, had he been allowed, he might have indulged in some creative flight on the way, though his rider discouraged the beginning of a dramatic swoop. Perhaps we will be lucky!

He added, winging toward a more open patch of green which looked as though it might accommodate their landing.

We will find some, Pipith agreed, Or look again until we do. The bronze followed at a relaxed pace. If Linnaeth had indeed decided on some more dramatic maneuvers, he likely would have followed suit, but otherwise he was content to simply fly.

He landed in their chosen clearing, and Set'al dismounted.

"Sorry about that, Sir." S'in apologized as he dismounted from his own dragon. "We're still working on the idea that big displays aren't technically called for at the drop of a hat."

He wasn't familiar with the bronzerider or his small bronze, Pipith, an amusingly appropriate name for a tiny bronze since, he had to admit, it reminded him of the term he'd occasionally use for the seeds in fruit. Tiny, for a bronze, but he was willing to bet you'd crack a metaphorical tooth on that one too.

Should I tell Pipith that?

That... seems like it would be a bad idea.

You think it would make him angry?

A bit.

Alright then.

"Did you have any preference for how you'd like to begin searching, sir?"

He had a few thoughts on how to do an effective sweep, or how he thought it might go, but then, this was an older rider, his ranking superior, and who knew, the man might have some previous experience searching an fair sized area for something hard to find. Too bad it wasn't quite like search riding, it would have been much easier if there was a chance that their dragons would be able to pinpoint the plants.

It was a very, very good call on S'in's part to advise his dragon against pointing out Pipith's size. The bronze would have immediately stopped being so agreeable. As it was, however, he remained placid, and settled comfortably in his landing spot. It was probably best that he not go tromping along with the humans - he was small for his size, sure, but he was more than big enough to squash a valuable plant without ever noticing.

It always weirded Set'al out a little to be called 'sir,' like some kind of authority figure. He supposed he was, technically, but he wasn't that old or that responsible yet.

"Just call me Set'al," he requested with a touch of a grin. And hmm. How should they go about this? He wasn't exactly the organized type. "You take one side, I'll take the other?"

"Sounds like a plan. If we each start on one side and then meet in the middle we stand a lower chance of missing anything." S'in nodded. "I'll let you know if I find anything. He noted.

There didn't seem much more point in standing on ceremony, since Set'al didn't seem inclined to rule the hunt with an iron fist, which was just fine with S'in. Technically he would have been just as capable of dealing with the iron fist, but that didn't mean he -liked- it. A little bit of ability to relax was nice, even if the mission itself was critical.

Though not typically the self-conscious sort, Set'al was glad the brownrider liked the idea. Granted, it was totally simple and nothing special, but nobody liked when they had a stupid idea and got called on it. Starting at the appropriate side, he worked his way back inward, looking carefully.

Please, please let them find something....

S'in heaved a sigh as he marched his way through the clearing. So far he wasn't having much luck, once or twice he thought he'd caught a glimpse of something that might remotely have resembled the plant, but all his 'discoveries' so far had fallen through, and he was having even less luck now.

He glanced up once or twice at the Bronzerider, who he was going to have to, he made a note inwardly, learn a little bit more about, but Set'al didn't look from here to be having any better luck than he was.

Or so he guessed from the man's expression. For all he knew the man had a dead pan that made rocks pale in comparison.

"Anything? Nothing here so far..."

"Nope, not a thing here," he replied, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips. For the most part, his expression was one of someone concentrating very hard. If this plant weren't so important, he'd have had a difficult time staying on task. His dragon telling him to Look harder wasn't all that helpful, either.

I can't just will one into existence, Pip.
