Lots of stuff is easy to make from scratch, like fried chicken, apple pie, french fries (or the healthier, baked potatoes), steak, stuff like that. Chicken is really cheap so we end up having some form of it nearly every night. I suggest checking out instructables.com, they have a lot of awesome recipes with step by step instructions and photos so it's easier to figure out. Also Cheap Eats has some recipes that tells you how much each ingredient costs.

We're broke as all get out since I was unemployed for 3 months, and he has 3 loans he's paying off. But in the months we've been together I have not once opened a box of hamburger helper. [the sodium content of those is like asking for a heart attack]
It's actually much cheaper to buy meal components and put them together than it is to pay for the packaging of boxed meals.

well thats true the the main issue with that is i have no idea what to do or what to get most of the time
i am getting quite awesome at making bbq chicken mrgreen the fiance thinks i make is too spicey though so i have to tone it down a bit. kraft makes a good sauce lol
and can make some yummy squash dishes that i learned from my mom and all the vegans in my family but the fiance hates squash and refuses to try it again after the first dish i made
