Gaelle was more than a little agitated...she was downright ANNOYED! HE had asked her to meet with him. HE had suggested the time and the place. And yet HE wasn't here! It was...was...UGH! The purple and blue lioness, normally calm and composed, lashed out at the dirt, sending a pawful of soft loam flying with the motion. HOW DARE HE! She'd known him all her life, and he KNEW how much things like this agitated her, how he was the only one who could get under her skin like this!
Perhaps that was why he did it. Because it pushed her buttons and got her to abandon her normal decorum. WELL! He wouldn't win this time! This time, the Soldier would LOOSE! Gaelle settled herself, and waited. b*****d would learn. When you SAID 'sunset, by the rock with the tail on your nightly stroll path' you ought to hold up to it! Not keep a Duchess waiting!

Damned colonists. Now he was running LATE because one had decided to pick a fight with him. Why couldn't they just accept the fact that he was there to make sure their lives were better, safer? Oh well...Gaelle could deal with him being late. She was used to always getting her way, after all, being the only cub of Perrin. He nodded to the ferrier as the lashed together logs hit the shore, and he trotted towards the place he'd said he'd meet his old friend.
Only to see her sitting there, waiting patiently. The dirt in front of her said she'd had a temper-fit beforehand though. He smirked and nodded his head to her. "I apologize for my lateness, Gaelle. I was held up by a Colonist."

Gaelle narrowed violet eyes at the blue and white lion, then snorted. "Oh? What sort of 'held up', Jokull? A fight you had to break up? Or a pretty piece of tail that was more important than your oldest friend?" That was about as vulgar as the Duchess got. And normally, she was more refined than that! But...well, she was in a bad mood.
She HATED being kept waiting! The only creature she tolerated it from was little Ani'ma...and that was simply because the poor dear had the mind of a cub, always forgetting things until the last moment!

Jokull actually cringed. "One of them picked a fight with me, Gaelle." He did not do the 'pretty piece of tail' thing! He was better than some of his more reckless comrades. Had better sense than that! He wasn't about to sully his parents' good names by breeding with a colonist or producing a hybrid.
"I am sorry I'm late." Though she did need a lesson in patience...Jokull understood her. He didn't like lateness either.

The Duchess sighed and nodded. "I know, I know. I've just...my father has been on me more. About finding a mate. I know he just wants to see me well cared for, but I just don't want to marry someone I don't care for!" She drooped, her ears going down. "I want something like Mother and Father have."
She wanted a whirlwind romance, a love that held true through the worst, her perfect match! She wanted someone who was as much friend as mate, someone who loved her for all her gifts AND all her foibles!

Well. THAT explaind everything. Jokull moved over by her, placing a paw over one of hers in the only gesture of comfort he really ever gave. "I see." Duchesses had it hard...Gaelle was lucky in the fact her father hadn't forced her to marry for the family's gain. He was genuinely trying to look out for her. But...
Jokull knew Gaelle. And knew Gaelle wanted something she likely would never have. "Why don't you give some of your suitors a chance? What you want...Gaelle, what your parents have is a rare thing. Don't rely on it."

Gaelle made a rather pathetic noise. "I know...I know, I know, I know." And she HATED that thought. That she might not find something like that. "I just...I can't STAND most of my suitors. I'm polite, but none of them ever really get the message that I'm just not interested!"
She shifted so she could lean into Jokull's larger bulk. "I miss being a cub. Things were so simple then."

The Soldier stiffened a bit at the contact, but forced himself to relax. It was just Gaelle. It was just his oldest friend. "Things were, indeed, simpler." Neither had to really be anything, and they could just...be cubs. For a little bit of their lives. It hadn't been long before they'd had to grow up, though. Being from noble families did that to a lion and lioness.

Gaelle smiled slightly at Jokull. "Well...even though you aggravate me, you're still my oldest friend. THAT hasn't changed. Not one bit." And she was glad for it. She had at least one person who understood her and was on her side...Even if he was a logical skeptic.

Jokull smiled slightly. "And you are still my oldest friend." He took a deep breath. "Well...Perhaps you should think of a...back-up plan. In case your father decides to try making you decide. Best you plan for the worst, and not have to use the plan, than have the worst happen and have no plan."

Hmm...a back-up plan. That sounded like a good idea. Maybe...ha! "Hey...You eventually need a mate. If I don't find someone by the time Father decides he doesn't want to wait, would you be my mate?" Better a friend than someone she couldn't stand (or was OLD). And her father liked Jokull...

He had not expected that from her. Jokull looked at her oddly, thinking. Her words spoke truth. And he had no illusions of anyone loving him. He was too cold towards most. And most wouldn't bother trying to get to know him. If he ended up Gaelle's mate...at least he would be with a friend.
"Alright." He nodded. "If that ends up being, I will be your mate."

Gaelle smiled brightly. Now she had a 'back-up plan'! And it was one she did not mind. Jokull was her closest friend, after all. He knew her, gifts and foibles and all, and still cared for her. Had cared for her almost since she'd been born. "Than it's a deal. Now...what shall we do tonight?"

]Jokull smiled slightly, glad Gaelle was in good spirits once more. "Let us go hunting, then maybe stargaze. I am certain we could both use a meal, and it's a good, clear night." He nudged her in the direction of good hunting, and then started off himself. He always did enjoy spending time with her. She had no expectations of him, just as he had none of her. And that suited him well.
