Sea foam green-blue paws padded along the ground, black claws pricking the mildly damp ground. Next to the owner of said paws, water ran in a gentle stream current, curling in itself as it headed towards an unknown destination. The lion walking next to it kept his eyes on the horizon, watching the trees grow ever closer. Where there were trees... There may be fruits. Tasty fruits, juicy fruits, sweet fruits... Fruit, fruit, and more fruit! Or he hoped.

On the lion's back rode a hare, swaying back and forth with the rhythm of the lion's steps. A delicate nose twitched, smelling the air, catching a whiff of a sweet scent. A scent they were looking for... And one that made him happy, for his master was happy, and they could share a delicious treat! Light blue eyes looked around now and then, seeking to see if others were around. As his nose twitched, he soon caught the scent of another. Maybe they'd desire to share in the fruit?

User ImageAhead in the stand of marula trees, there were indeed fruits. It was actually an oasis of fruit- strangely odd how plentiful the fruit was. Then again, most of the birds that had been fluttering around, working dedicatedly to pick said fruit had flown off when the green lioness decided this would be a pleasant place to take a nap. The shade kept it cool, and there was water near by.

Ampalaya cleared a space for herself by shoving away the pufferfish squash and vines that curled through the underbrush and around the natal-plum bushes that dotted the area. The marula trees were heavy with fruit - Ampalaya found a spot where it was unlikely for any to drop down onto her. She had no interest in it, unless she was exceptionally thirsty. Fruit tasted funny.

Once the space was clear of fruit, brush, and vine, the lioness settled down. She had been walking a lot, and could use some rest. There was nothing of interest here to other lions, so she would likely be left in peace until the birds regained their courage.

But indeed, it seemed, there WAS something to interest a lion. Entering the copse of trees, Xavier looked up at the fruits, eyes dancing. "Look at them, Yutu, just ripe for the picking... Literally." He stopped by a tree, rising up on his hind paws and placing his forepaws on the trunk, reaching up and plucking a juicy fruit from the tree to eat. The taste was simply wonderful, the lion's ears going to the side with a slight upward p***k of delight. "Mmmmmm..."

While Xavier was occupied with the fruit, Yutu was occupied with the smell of another lion. As the hare looked around, he heard the slight rustling of movement, climbing off his master's back. "Master... I don't think we're alone here... I think there's a lion here..."

"Well, as long as they're not eating all the fruit or hogging it in general... I don't care." He had fruit, he was happy.

Ampalaya had just barely fallen asleep when she heard more rustling entering the grove and voices. It wasn't the birds; birds would have given it more time to be sure she was asleep. So it had to be something else.
She shook her head to slough off the sleep and sat up. There was a lion actually eating some of the marula fruit - and a small green hare, but that wasn't as important. The only time she had ever eaten fruit or seen other lions eat fruit was when there was a lack of water or prey was practically nonexistent. And there was water nearby, and prey was not that scarce.
"Excuse me," she blurted, "but why are you eating fruit?"

As Xavier lifted his head and looked at the speaker, his long hare-like ears lifted forward a bit. Slowly chewing, he folded his ears back again before swallowing. "I happen to enjoy the taste." He frowned, looking the other over, before looking down at Yutu. "Look at that, you two match, Yutu..."

The hare's ears twitched as he watched the lioness. "Sort of..." He stepped under Xavier, visibly hiding. He was fine around other gods, but mortal lions, for he could see that this is what it was... Would find a snack out of him. They, after all, HAD to eat, while gods didn't. Which was what made Yutu more comfortable around them.

"I'm not hungry," Ampalaya told the hare that was attempting to make himself invisible. "And even if I was, you're not more then a mouthful; that's not even worth the chase."
Ampalaya watched Xavier chew the fruit. The taste of fruit? Fruit just tasted sweet, and watery. Strange. And not as satisfying as the haunch of a zebra or a nice plump wildebeast buck. She had never met a lion who had enjoyed the taste of fruit. She had met one that loved honey, once, and employed ratels to fetch it for him.
She decided to risk another question.
"Do you only eat fruit? I thought lions had to have meat."

"Technically I don't have to eat at all. Like I said... I just like fruit." He rose up on his hind paws, reaching a paw out and pulling one down to his mouth to eat. Some fell to the ground, allowing Yutu the opportunity to eat it. The god made a pleased face, closing his eyes, as the juices dribbled from his chin. "Mmmmm..."

The hare let out a slightly more relaxed sigh. "Oh, good... Not that I think Master would let you have me, anyway..." He paused, looking up. "Right... Master...?" He stepped back just a bit as the pieces of fruit fell, then pulled some close.

Xavier looked down at Yutu, swallowing his mouthful of fruit. "Why would I let somebody eat my pet? I'd have to go get a new one, and you were already so hard to find!" Plus he was very picky.

Although amused by the hare's nervous attentions to the lion, and the lion's unexpected rejoinder, Ampalaya's concern remained fixed on the fact that the lion was eating fruit. (Never having met a god before, it did not occur to Ampalaya that the aqua lion contentedly munching fruit in front of her was a god. She was understandably confused. )
"What do you mean you don't have to eat?"

Xavier stared for a moment, blinking, before it dawned on her. She didn't know what he was. It wasn't like every lion in Africa and Asia met a god before, anyway. "I'm the God of the Cursed. Gods don't have to eat... Technically I don't think we have to BREATHE, either, but that one's an automatic thing... But the eating is pure pleasure reasons. In this case..." He held a fruit up with his paw. "I like the taste of fruit."

Yutu eyed the lioness again, then hopped off, finding some fruit to sit and eat. It hadn't yet fermented - It was freshly fallen, and in fact showed some sign of a bird pecking it. Not that he minded, though, as long as it didn't fall into somebody's... Well, it hadn't, and that was one of the important things before he ate it.

While considering this, Ampalaya licked a piece of fallen fruit on the ground near her. No, it was still disgusting, what ever this lion said. She batted it toward the hare, and watched while it rolled toward it and stopped about a paw's length from the critter.
Gods were a new thing to Ampalaya. Various lions she had met were worshippers, but Amp and her mother had never been particularly pious. Finally, Ampalaya bowed.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, sir."

Yutu stared at the fruit, then finished the one he'd been eating. Pleased with his surroundings, the hare grabbed the new fruit and started to eat it. Oh, but the joys of it, it tasted so good!

He shrugged, eating the fruit. When he'd swallowed the last bite, he watched the lioness. "Please don't bow... I don't imagine curses are worth bowing to..." He tilted his head, still watching her. "So, you must not be part of a pride... I only see prideless lions out and about... Or other gods... You're the first mortal I've met so far in this life, at least..."
PostPosted: Sun Oct 31, 2010 8:54 pm

"Still you're the god of curses . . . not just a curse. So that deserves some respect, right? And yeah, I'm prideless. I always have been."
She settled back down to watch the god and the hare munch away on their fruit. But now, knowing he was a god, she had questions.

"So, do you know a lot of gods then? Or is it just you and your hare?"

The god sat down, shrugging. "I can't say I know a LOT of gods... I've met a few... Some between multiple lives. Right now my better track records include Gravity and Hardships." He stretched a bit, a few places along his spine popping. "So why not join a pride? There's safety in prides and all..." Plus gods were more likely to be worshiped in prides. Not that he wanted to be worshiped. Was he worth worshiping?

Yutu looked up from his fruit, pleasantly full. "Or start your own pride!" It was well worth doing, after all. There were plenty of niches that prides had yet to fill that could be filled. "Then you only have your own rules to abide by!" He got up, hopping over to Xavier. "A pride of green lions..." Or blue, or purple... Or a rainbow... Who knew what could be found out there!

"For mortals, at least, it's usually not that easy. You don't just "join" a pride. Sometimes you have to fight your way in. Sometimes you have to prove yourself. And you have to find a pride where you can feel at home. There are a lot of them out there. You don't just plop yourself down."
Ampalaya's voice became slightly bitter as she continued.
"Besides, I never had the chance to make myself at home. My mother kept us moving."

"Surely you wouldn't be chased away for just visiting the border...?" Yutu climbed his way up to Xavier's back, watching the lioness. "I think there's prides that let lions just visit them... Get a feel for them... Maybe you could find one of them. You wouldn't have to stay forever, either, just stick around as long as you feel comfortable!"

Xavier rolled his eyes, before shaking Yutu off. "Pesky hare, I don't think she cares for a pride right now." Using a rear paw, he kicked the hare behind him, sending the little green creature tumbling. "Why would she keep you moving? Didn't like prides herself?" Right now, the god himself kept moving, simply because... He could. And he had nothing to tie him down at the moment.
