Wykla stumbled. The sky was barely pink on the horizon. Her face cracked in a wide yawn that she couldn't hide. For her chore today, she'd been assigned to some rider.... What had been his name again? ...and told she'd be expected before dawn. Ugh, Shards! Why'd I have to get assigned the early bird?

She yawned again and rubbed her eyes. Before dawn was not her normal time if she could help it. Still, it was a rider she'd been assigned to help. For that, and the chance to help with his dragon had she dragged herself from the warm covers of her bed. She'd left Boreal sleeping on her pillow; thinking that at least one of them could sleep past sunrise. Dutifully the young girl had made her way to the appointed meeting place.

H'ex was waiting in one of the lover's nooks in the dining hall, nursing a cup of steaming tea and yawning. He'd woken an hour or so earlier but they'd been out late the night before so his biorhythm was all screwed up. Very few people rose at this time of the day but his habits died hard. At least, he figured, he'd been given a Candidate to help with his chores for the day... a way of getting to know the Weyr, as it were.

When the sleepy Candidate padded into the dining hall, it was unlikely she was there for any other reason then chores. He perked when he noticed her and waved, "Morning!~ Did you sleep well?"

Wykla stepped into the dining hall, and had a brief moment of hope for a cup of klah. It was quickly dashed as an unknown man hailed her from an alcove. With an internal sigh, she walked over. "Good morning Rider. My name is Wykla and I was told to report to you. I slept..." better if I could have slept later.. "...well enough. Thank you."

Her hair was in a simple braid thrown over her shoulder. She hadn't had the time for washing and fluffing it like she would have wanted. For a moment, she shifted uncomfortably. Now what? Might as well get it over with. "How will I be assisting you today?" Her tone clearly said she expected to be shoving something.

(Could you darken the colour of your font? It's exceedingly hard to read.)

H'ex watched her for a moment, well aware of what that tone meant - he'd heard it often enough among all the Candidates he'd met here, and before. "Well, with an attitude like that, you're not going to get very far." He replied, a touch curtly, "Adult dragons don't need to be cleaned up after like the young ones, as I'm sure your lessons have taught you, hrm?"

Arching a brow, he drank deeply of his klah then set it down and sat back, gaze catching hers, "While I understand it is early yet, you are speaking to a ranking rider. It would be best to mind your manners if you wish to help oil my bronze. He was so looking forward to this as well." It was clear from the crisp and professional manner of his speech that did not waste words, each phrase and sentence something important.

Standing, he watched her a moment, obviously waiting.

(Sorry about that. I did pick a bad color for her. Is that better?)

Wykla flushed as he reprimanded her. "Yes Sir." That was always a safe reply. Her lessons had been leaning towards that, now that she thought of it. Still not having much interaction with young or grown dragons had left her a bit of a skeptic. Maybe the Candidate Master did know what he was talking about. She made a note to pay more attention next class.

There. So he was a bronze rider. Wykla wondered why he had picked her, or had someone assigned her to him? Then the words sunk in. An unguarded, surprised look fluttered across her face. "You were going to let me touch him? .....Sir." She'd almost forgotten the sir in her surprise. He's no reason to lie to me, and he is a bronze rider. Shouldn't he be trusted then? I never thought I'd be helping a bronze rider.

She was ready to follow, looking up at him.

H'ex arched a brow, "How else did you think you'd go about oiling a dragon?" Shaking his head, he gestured as he stepped away, "Come along. Tialzieth's waiting." He smiled as he spoke his beloved's name, a fond look in his eye that every rider possessed in regards to Theirs.

We are coming. This Candidate it tired, Tia, so don't overwhelm her, okay? He spoke mentally, glancing back to regard the girl.

Ooh! You got a female Candidate? What's her name, Mine? Tia chimed back, rousing himself from a dozing state, Where do you want me?

Ah.... H'ex laughed, audibly, and shook his head as he ran a hand through his hair. He'd forgotten to ask, or give his own name. "Tia would like to know your name. I am H'ex." He paused then, turning to face her and held out a hand in a gesture of greeting. As for where... stay in the weyr. Saves a hike onto the clifftops.

That makes that easy then. Wake me when you get here.

H'ex smiled, We will.

"Well, um... that would be pretty difficult sir." Wykla concentrated on walking along quickly with the rider. She hadn't wanted to say what she really thought for fear of insulting him. So she kept her mouth shut and focused on walking.

This was very much different from how she'd thought it'd be. Could there be any way to explain it and warn someone? Wykla wasn't sure. Deep in thought, she hadn't noticed the glance H'ex tossed back her way.

His laugh made her look up at him, curious. What made him laugh? I didn't do or say anything. Was it his dragon then? When he asked for her name, Wykla almost pouted. She had given it when she'd walked up. Apparently to her mind, he hadn't been paying attention.

Well she would forgive him this time since his dragon asked. "My name is Wykla, sir." For a moment she pondered. Her friend had suggested trying tasks to help her figure out where she wanted to go. Perhaps Rider H'ex would give her some help in deciding if she really wanted to Impress. She would ask later while they were oiling Tialzieth, but kept her answer for now short.
