MISSOULA, Mont. -- Idaho officials are denying a claim by Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg of Montana that Idaho won't enforce federal protection of wolves.
The Missoulian reports that Rehberg on Thursday told a Safari Club International audience in Missoula that he likes what he describes as Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's plan to have state game wardens ignore requirements of the Endangered Species Act.
But Otter spokesman Jon Hanian told the newspaper that no such plan exists, and Idaho Fish and Game spokesman Mike Keckler says there's no talk of declaring open season on wolves.
A federal judge in August restored wolves across the Northern Rockies to the endangered species list following a lawsuit from environmentalists.
But Idaho and Montana officials are pushing federal officials to allow a public wolf hunt.
