Morning had come too early for the mare’s liking. She groaned as her legs moved out from underneath her petite body as she pushed herself up from the soft moss bed that she had prepared some night ago. She ruffled up the bed with her hooves, as she didn’t like to stay in once place for too long. Was it that she was running away from something? Maybe. She had been a nomad for some time now and Fauna was quite used to the life away from herds.
Fauna flittered her wings to get the small droplets of dew off of them. She lowered her head and stretched out her neck gently brushing the end of her snout against the bottom part of her butterfly wings. Wet wings had always irritated her. She licked some of the drops off in attempts that they would dry faster. Her pink optics closed as she groomed herself for a brief moment before deciding that her wings would dry better in the sunlight.
Although finding the perfect patch of sunlight throughout these dense woodlands were rare. Her ears swiveled and her nostrils flared as the faint sound of water lapping against a shoreline could be heard. She raised her head and decided to follow the sound. A taste of refreshing water sounded mighty tasty right about now even more so if she found some buttercups for an early breakfast snack.
Fauna followed the sound. She walked slowly, not to too quickly as she took notice to the birds awakening from their slumber and singing their songs up in the canopy. She took to awe as they flew about to wake up the other forest inhabitants with their melodies.

A black shape with orange wings fluttered among the flowers in the early morning light. Well, not a pure black figure; the ends of the legs were orange, tipped with white. It wasn't a butterfly; butterflies have six legs instead of four, and they generally do not have emerald eyes and a long silken tail. What fluttered from flower to flower was an arion stallion named Brennus, the only son of the leaders of the Sunflare Herd, the largest herd of Stars currently known on Earth. Brennus sipped the nectar in the buttercups he was investigating. Sweet. Grass was fine, but he liked the sweet, tangy flavor of nectar much more. Which was probably why he spent so much time the size of a butterfly. It wasn't exactly easy to sip nectar with a huge muzzle, so being the size of a butterfly was helpful. Besides, this size, he could slip away from the herd for a bit. His parents had adopted a young arion filly who looked remarkably like just about everyone else in his family, the filly, Naas, was asleep, his parents were cuddling in their bizarre way, which involved his mother shrinking to the size of a butterfly and playing in his father's mane, and his three sisters were off doing their own thing this morning. Kana seemed to have a boyfriend outside of the herd, Sunniva was keeping an eye on the herd, and he never knew what Delilah was up to. Sighing, he continued to have his breakfast, unaware of a full-sized black arion mare heading his way.

The birds had taken comfort of flying around and beside their mare neighbor and Fauna had taken a liking to their presence near her as having them didn’t make her feel so lonely. A smile blossomed on her lips as the sung sweet melodies to her. Her unique pink wings fluttered as she wished to join them in flight above the high canopies. But Fauna didn’t have time to play right now. Her stomach grumbled as she remembered how hungry she really was. Lately she hadn’t been eating a lot nor sleeping much either. Nightmares consumed the young mare that in turn made her appetite less.
“I was wondering if you could help me,” she said softly as a plump little bird perched itself on her shoulder. “I am looking for a particular flower. It’s nectar sweet with settle tanginess. And their petals yellow much like the sun. They’re small in size and grow in bunches close to the earth. Do you know where I could find them?” she asked.
The bird chirped as it bounced on her shoulder. “Oh thank you! Thank you!” Fauna happily cheered. The bird nodded its head and blinked its beady eyes as it flew down from her shoulder and began to lead the way. Fauna followed and within a matter of moments was lead to a beautiful glade.
There were open patches of the canopy that led in sunlight from the heavens. Wild flowers of all sorts grew from the earth and the grass blades here were lightly drizzled with dew. The birds chirped as they flew off with their melodies lingering in the breeze.
Fauna breathed in the settle aromas of the flowers before lowering her head down and quietly grazing on the delectable plants.

The first sign that trouble was descending on Brennus was a shadow, followed closely by an increase in birdsong, and completed by someone nibbling on the flowers AWFULLY close to him. Being the only son of two herd leaders, one of them he'd grown up hearing had been a sun once upon a time, Brennus understandably flipped out. He grew instantly to full size, smacking into the black and hot pink arion mare who'd been grazing on the buttercups and nearly munched on him.
"Watch where you're eating, you nearly ate me!" he snorted, irritated at having nearly been eaten by accident.

One minute Fauna was grazing peacefully and then the next an Arion stallion was bumping into her. She stuttered off to the side from being pushed and gasped as her hooves almost dipped down into a small muddy pool of water. “Hey! Watch it!” she blurted out as her wings fluttered in anger. She snorted as she wriggled the end of her snout and gazed at the stallion that had ruined her breakfast.
She looked at the stallion that resembled the coloration of a monarch butterfly with an exception of his emerald optics. She snorted and tossed her silken mane. “It’s not like I tried to on purpose! I’m NOT the one who had shrunken down to the size of a beetle,” she retorted. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Stallions,” she muttered underneath her breath as she turned away from him then. “They think they know everything,” she grimaced. She moved away from the Arion stallion and began to graze again in hopes that this time she wouldn’t be interrupted.

Brennus sighed noisily, not really being all that pissed. Mostly annoyed, but then again, Brennus occupied a difficult position in his family, so he often felt like the odd one out and was easy to irritate. "I know you didn't try to eat me on purpose. I just don't like getting eaten while I'm having my breakfast." He sighed again, this time in a much more dignified manner befitting the son of a sun and two herd leaders.
"Look, I'm sorry I bumped into you, but I didn't particularly care to be eaten by accident. Do you want to have breakfast with me? The nectar is the best part of the flower, and you can only really get at the nectar if you're the size of a butterfly," he added as he shrank again to the size of a butterfly, warily landing on her dark muzzle so she didn't repeat her mistake.

“You make it sound as though you’ve been eaten before,” Fauna cracked a faint smile. “Not sure what a Arion that size would make a meal to,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders. The mare raised her head and glanced over her shoulder just as the stallion shrank to the size similar to a butterfly. Her bottom jaw lowered as she watched in awe although it wasn’t that uncommon for this species to do. However Fauna had never learned how to perform such a remarkable task. She tossed her mane so that it hid half of her face and eyesight as she looked away just as he landed at the end of her snout.
“Would you laugh at me if I said I couldn’t shrink?” Fauna asked as she looked at him in between her pink strands of her mane. Her eyes furrowed and she looked away from him again. Her legs had stiffened as she prepared herself to hear a roar of laughter coming from the stallion. Countless times others had laughed at her because of the ability she couldn’t possess. You’re not a true Arion if you cannot turn, someone had once told her. It was probably the reason to why she tended to keep to her self. She wasn’t a true Arion. She never saw herself as one. Fauna sighed deeply as she quickly glimpsed to the small stallion upon her snout.

Brennus stared at the arion before him. No. Not physically possible. All arion learned to change size from infancy. He, his mother, his sister Kana, and his adopted sister Naas could all change their size as easily as breathing. Well, Delilah couldn't, she wasn't an arion, but neither was Sunniva nor their father. They didn't count. All arion knew how to change...unless...unless....
Brennus had, of course, heard of Starfall and the world of the Stars in Dreamspace. His parents almost never spoke of their own Falls, only that it had been terrible and often had dreadful effects on Stars. Was it possible that she'd lost her memory of how to change size and didn't even realize she'd lost her memories?
Possibly. Better to not ask about it, given how touchy even his own parents were on the subject. So. New problem. How to reteach her how to change size? How had he learned? Well, one had to want to be a certain size and to will it to be so. Though the first time one did it, ever or after a long time of not doing it, was to imagine oneself as a certain size and then insist to yourself that you really were that size. After that, it was usually just a matter of willing yourself to be a certain size.
He took a deep breath. "OK, here's how you do it. Imagine yourself being the size of a butterfly. About the same size as me. Once you can clearly imagine that, tell yourself that you really are that size, and tell it to yourself so firmly that you believe it."

Fauna pinched her eyes closed as she could feel a tingly feeling at the bottom of her gut as she waited for the roar or laughter to come from his vocals. One minute passed by and soon another but no laughter. Fauna peeked open one eye to see that the stallion was looking at her without a smirk and teasing grin. She blinked her eyes and gently shook her head as no to knock him off. It wasn’t a mirage or some sort of a twisted illusion. He hadn’t laughed at her or cracked an unhumerous comment. Hm. Odd, she thought to herself as she looked at him or maybe not odd at all. Just different…
She breathed deeply as she listened to him teach her how to shrink down the size of a butterfly. Logically it was impossible. But there before her was a teeny tiny stallion at the end of her muzzle. The steps were surprisingly simple. She just had to give it a try!
“Okay. Here goes nothing,” she closed her eyes and thought of how it would be to be small. She’d be able to fly easily with the birds and be carried by the breeze. “I’m a butterfly! I’m a butterfly!” she said out loud. Her wings fluttered and a wide smile overcame her lips. She held her breath for a moment before exhaling and opening her eyes.
Nothing. She sighed deeply and tossed her mane again. “It didn’t work,” she said. Obviously. Fauna had tried other times to shrink and was given the same outcome. “I’m just not that talented. I am sorry,” she said softly.
Fauna should’ve known better than to get her hopes up.

No. Not possible. Changing size should be as natural as breathing to an arion. "Try again. Try...I dunno...try imagining the two of us going from flower to flower, drinking the nectar. Keep the mental image firmly in your mind." The image was sticking in his mind and he kicked it away as a distraction. Nice thought, but he had bigger fish to fry right now. "Tell yourself that you can do it, that you are doing it, and that it's second nature to you. All arion can do this. Maybe you've just forgotten or something, but you can do this. I KNOW you can do this."

Fauna sighed and nodded her head. This stallion seemed to have all the hopes in the world that she could shrink to his current size and he seemed so optimistic about the idea. Fauna smiled as she tried to feed off of his energy and positive attitude. Her ears lowered as she looked away from him. She just didn’t want to get the same results of not being able to shrink. She was tired of it. She wanted to show everyone—prove to herself that she was a true Arion! But she feared that it couldn’t be simply done.
“I’ll give it another try,” she said as she looked to him. She raised her head and looked to the colorful wild flowers that grew throughout the glade. The brightly soft petals that danced with the gentle breeze and the delectable aromas that teased her with their scents. Her eyes swiveled at the faint sound of birdsong in the distance. The smile on her lips blossoming as the little plump bird flew to her as if cheering her on.
She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply. Her wings fluttered and Fauna thought of how it would be to fly with the birds throughout the forest. And to fly with this stallion who was still a stranger to her throughout the glade upon flower to the next.
Her wings began to beat more quickly. The urge to change was greater now. She had to—she needed to. Fauna felt warmth fill the bottom of her gut and travel throughout her body. Oddly she began to feel lighter as well as though her hooves were lifting from the ground. Afraid that opening her eyes would ruin her chain of thoughts she kept them closed.
She imagined herself that small to the stallion’s height. “You can do it,” she whispered to herself. She repeated her little cheer to herself again and again. Suddenly the change happened and without any pain that Fauna thought there would be. She opened her eyes and looked around as the world looked much, much bigger!
“I did it!” she cheered up with laughter echoing out from her vocals. “Huh? Wha--!” her wings hadn’t yet learned how to fly and she felt herself dropping down to the ground. Fauna screamed out as her legs sprawled out below her. But suddenly she plopped down onto a flower in a dust of pollen that covered her. She giggled as she lay awkwardly on the flower.

Brennus laughed long and hard. "See? You can change. You probably haven't changed in so long that you've forgotten how to do it. Now," he said, landing on the flower next to her, "breakfast. And then I'll reteach you how to fly with tiny wings," he added, a little sheepish that he'd completely forgotten how hard it is to fly after the first change, ever or in a long time. It should take first priority, but she'd need energy fast. And nectar was the perfect way to get it. Smiling, his emerald eyes still sparkling with laughter, he bent his head down to drink the sweet, tangy nectar of the buttercup, using his eyes to gesture to her to do the same.

Fauna felt as though she could accomplish anything. She grinned as she sneezed quietly from the pollen that had covered her body and dusted up from the soft pad of the flower every time she took a step. The flower that she stood upon felt soft and oddly squishy. She giggled as she leaped forwards and caused a cloud of pollen to form around her. More laughter escaped from her vocals as she snorted softly and kicked at the pad. Many times before she probably would’ve crushed the flowers with her hooves but now after being this small she wanted to protect them all.
She stepped forwards to the stallion and mimicked his position. She dipped her head down to the golden nectar. Fauna had never really tasted nectar before but heard that it was like drinking liquid gold. She licked her lips and began to lap up the sweet nectar. No taste could be compared to what she had just drunk! It was delicious! Sweet and tangy all mixed together.
She tossed back her head and neighed in happiness as she began to drink more and more. She gulped the juices quickly into her mouth and swallowed hard nearly choking herself. But Fauna didn’t care. She was in bliss!

Brennus couldn't help but laugh at her antics. This one was cute. Really cute, and a bit sassy. Rather like nectar, sweet and tangy all rolled up into one, never tasting wrong and never dull. Grinning, he moved close to her until their shoulders nearly touched and started licking some of the stray nectar off her delicate muzzle. "Missed some," he said cheekily.

Fauna couldn’t get enough of the nectar and gulped it down like it was nothing. She wondered if other flowers had the same taste or if each one was different from the next. She grimaced, as there was only one way to find out. She was completely oblivious of the stallion moving closer to him until he had licked some of the golden sap from her muzzle. Fauna raised her head with blushing cheeks as she looked at him. “Oh,” she plainly said as her wings began to flutter. “How silly of me,” she shyly looked away. She shifted her weight on her hooves and gazed down at her reflection on the golden liquid.
“What’s your name?” Fauna asked. He had been so busy teaching her how to shrink and take a taste of the nectar that they had skipped introductions. She looked to the stallion with a small smile. Her eyes quickly glanced to how close they were actually standing. Fauna gulped quietly as her eyes furrowed together. This was probably the closest she had ever gotten to another let alone it being a stallion. She brought her gaze back to his face and felt as though she were drowning in his emerald eyes. Fauna shook her head and then dipped it back down to drink more of the nectar.
