The black lioness stepped into the dirt as she smelled the cool breeze. She couldn't feel the sun on her pelt, and the birds seemed to have settled by now. It must be night time... And the perfect time to stalk unsuspecting prey.
It'd been so many moon cycles since she lost her pride, her family, her home. She'd given up completely, quickly getting accustomed to her life as a blind lioness and a blind huntress. Her ears came in handy, they helped her pinpoint the location of the animals and trees she couldn't see, but she could smell. She was surprisingly successful, but she wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the kind strangers who had shared a meal whenever she happened to fail.
It was empowering to know she could be independent, even though she was blind. It was as if she was proving her entire family wrong. She never needed to be babied. If only she could show them how much she's improved. Even her headaches had dulled to a minor drumming nuisance...
Vuxta paused, ears pricking to absorb the sound of a faraway pawstep. It's heavy, can't be a cheetah... And less stealthy than a leopard. It must be a lion. Vuxta couldn't tell how far he was, he only hoped he'd be a kind stranger... rather than the occasional vicious ones. On the opposite end of the valley, Vuxta's keen ears picked up the sound of crunching gravel against firm hooves. Gazelle, zebra, gnu... the perfect hunting grounds. However, the lioness decided to wait until the lion disappeared. It didn't take a lot for her to blend into her surroundings... her coat was blacker than the night sky.

At the moment, Daire wasn't the cheeriest of lions. He was still dwelling in the past, which the lion tends to do at times... Red paws swiftly padded across the earth as his blue eyes stared hard at the ground. Colors of brown and green, tinted blue with the light of the moon blurred past his inattentive vision. It seemed like he's been going in circles for forever... he was getting no where, and his life was dull, meaningless, disposable... But it wasn't when he was with Clermeilli-Pie. At least, it didn't seem that way. Daire wondered how the cubs were doing... How old they were, the status of their health, their favorite games... and most importantly, if they remembered ol' Daire.
With a sigh, the dark lion quickened his pace. Maybe if he moved faster he'd feel like he was actually getting somewhere. Maybe.
But maybe he should have taken his eyes off his wandering paws for a moment, too. Without so much as a warning, the lion slammed into the trunk of a thin tree with a loud crack. He slumped to the earth in a sad pile as he cringed and held his throbbing head in his paws. A hiss of pain shot through his teeth as he slowly rose and glanced around to make sure no one had seen his embarrassing mistake.

The male was obviously distracted by something that was troubling him. As he trotted closer, Vuxta heard his melancholy sigh... and shortly after that, a crack and a thud. Vuxta didn't bother stifling her laughter. She couldn't help it, it was funny when a sighted lion ran into a tree. And Vuxta knew he was sighted. He was much too brisk and clumsy not to be. Though she felt his pain, she'd done it multiple times as a newly blind feline. She let her throaty chuckles break the silence of the night air, raising a paw as if to withhold the sound to no avail. Daire felt his face warm up considerably as he heard the laughter of a female in the distance. Had she seen him make a fool of himself? His eyes jumped around, trying to spot her. Finally, among a shroud of vegetation, there she was. Wriggling with laughter. As embarrassed as he was, Daire still longed for company. It physically hurt how lonely he has been since his separation with Clermeilli-Pie. Without a second thought, he jumped to his toes and skipped over to the female. "Heh... That tree jumped out of no where." He chuckled weakly in a lame attempt to laugh at his own mistake. "I didn't see you there either, m'lady." As he arrived in front of the lioness, he gave a quick bow, and arose with a vibrant grin. It was good to be talking to someone again. "Trees do that a lot, don't they?" Vuxta gave him a sarcastic remark. It was almost out of character, but he deserved it for getting such a genuine laugh out of her. She didn't bother to lift her head as the lion came forward. As always, there was a hunch in her shoulders, her face hanging to the ground. It was the best position for scent-smelling, anyway. As he stopped, though, something odd happened. Something Vuxta never expected. She heard the soft rustle of grass that was unmistable sound of fur brushing against the grass. Did... Did he bow? Her lips instinctively curled into a sneer. This brought back sour memories of her days as 'princess' in her old home. "They do. My name is Daire." The lion smiled, but quickly noticed the female was busy... studying the earth? She wouldn't look up to meet his eyes. It concerned him, but he decided not to mention it. Perhaps it was an odd sort of culture-type-thing that Daire was yet to experience... "I am Vuxta." She stated simply, briefly wondering if she should outright tell him that she's blind. She knew he was curious of why she was looking at the ground so intently. It seemed to be everyone's first thought when meeting her. "I was hunting." She motioned towards the heard with the flick of her head. Black hair parted from her face to reveal her smokey aimless eyes. Cat's out of the bag! Daire's own eyes widened at the sight of hers. "Oh m'lady Vuxta! You're... You're blind!" The utter concern vibrated from his voice as he quickly got to his paws and assumed a more majestic pose. "I'll hunt for you. Stay here, I'll be right back!" No need to let a good lioness starve, after all. "You say that as if I don't already know..." Vuxta snarled, quickly putting a giant paw to the lion's face and forcing him to sit. "No, Daire. First of all, do not call me lady. And do not assume I am helpless just because I can not see." Stunned, and frightened from the force of the woman's grumbling roar of a voice, Daire quickly and quietly obeyed. Whoa, that was not expected. "I'm sorry M'la-... I'm sorry." He stuttered through an apology, chest swelling with the sadness that had been plaguing him all evening. Vuxta relaxed her paw, an amused grin crawling across her face as the lion obeyed so eagerly. "Are you always so inclined to do 'good deeds' when your mood is melancholy like so?" She asked quizzically, noticing the growing gloom in his voice. Daire thought this was an odd question. He always believed helping others was a necessity, despite the mood he was in. "Ah... I don't think so. I always help people... My mood doesn't effect my desire to be helpful." He explained it the best he could. "Ah, I see... You seem like a good lion, Daire... I apologize for frightening you." The lioness smirked, feeling the vibrations of Daire's trembling paws through the earth. "It was nice to meet you, sir."
