The roommates and I are talking about each pitching in to buy the house one of the Rock Band games as our Christmas present to each other. It's my responsibility to find out which one we would like best based on our combined tastes in music. (I've only played the original sweatdrop )
disregard the playlist, i suck cocks for not knowing DLC was transferrable between games.
So what are the differences in instruments between the versions?

3 involves keyboards, vocal harmonies, and pro mode where you basically play a real guitar/ get right octaves/ differentiate between cymbals and toms.
With that list of songs, just get some DLC. Rock Band is very generous with the DLC, ranging from Miley Cyrus to Cannibal Corpse.
Get 3 when it comes out soon. DLC works for all games.

I'm not a Rock Band fan, but 3 sounds better than all the others.
DLC is great, but hacking to put your songs in is even better.

We only have 4 people so having 2+ people on vocal might not be ideal. Also, won't 2's price plummet when 3 comes out? I mean, they're like $200+ new. confused Whatever we save on the actual game we can spend on DLC and upgrade to 3 when 4 comes out if the content is transferrable. xd
Is 2 just like 1 or did they change the instruments?

(I believe) 3's Pro mode gear is different. Plus three brings in PRIMUS PRIMUS, I SAY

We're all bargain hunters so we probably couldn't justify buying new.

Two has a good enough setlist on it's own to have and just play. Take a look at the setlist. And yeah. there is plenty of downloadable content. I would go and get RB 2 full band pack, and then just get three when you have extra money, and then the keyboard at another time. Or if you just happen to have a normal MIDI compatible keyboard then that will work with RB 3.

If your keyboard has these ports then that will work for the keyboard replacement. Clearer picture

Rockband Music FinderIf you click on the song name, it'll tell you if the song is DLC or from a specific game. :3
