Iola stalked along the grassy plains, wandering aimlessly… ah, such was the life of a wanderer. Nowhere to go, nothing to do… But there were far too many pluses of remaining nomadic. Iola, the cub in an adult’s form, was free to do as she pleased. And answered to no one. Sweet deal.

It had been awhile since she came in contact with another animal that wasn’t deemed prey. The scarcity of interaction often meant the lioness was forced to often eat prey creatures, rather than use them as playthings. Food came first. Besides… if she was going to try to persuade a hare that she meant no harm, her tummy growling for nourishment often meant her ‘would-be’ companion went darting off.

“S’booooorddd…” The femme whined, her voice reminiscent to a child’s wail. Her little outburst accompanied with a mask of displeasure that twisted her features. Plush lilac ears folded back against her skull, with her eyebrows knitted, casting a deep shadow over her cobalt eyes. A blueish hue glowed around her eyes in the darkness, the female already quite visible due to her bright flank. It didn’t help that she was grudgingly kicking at pebbles and dirt alike in her mini tantrum… further scaring off any prey animals she would have otherwise been able to entrap and ‘get’ to play with her.

Nko had spent the morning/afternoon patrolling her pride's lands. It was quite and cool. She enjoyed it and felt alive. Finishing her rounds, the red lioness took a moment to herself. She had gone beyond the edge of the territory. Oh, not far. Just enough to get some new dirt under her toes.

Thus she was walking and hear a voice whine. It sounded rather like a young cubs. Curious, she went to investigate. If she brought a cub back to the pride maybe they'd let her keep it. Oh, she'd have to left one of the suckling mothers nurse it if it was reeeeeeally young. With a spring in her step, Nko headed towards the sound.

As she neared the sounds became more evident. Only a cub could make that much noise out here. Surely it must be lost. Humming that she was doing a good thing, to save the cub, she approached. "Hello? My name's Nkosazana. Is anyone out there?"

Iola stopped sharply, her ears and eyes flicking in the direction of the source of the voice. The female tensed, her body jolting with her legs splayed around her from the miniature shock. But her surprise from the sudden voice was fleeting… a giddy yelp erupted from her maw, “I’m here~! I’m here~!” The female chirped, prancing forward out of the brush and towards the source of the noise. Iola could plainly hear that the voice that had called out to her was female, but her eagerness had gotten the better of her. Iola was without companionship for a whole -two days-. That’s a long time. So her normal shy and reclusive nature around females was cast aside. The only reason she was normally a mask of her true self, around females, was because she knew that other adult… matured… level headed ladies would find her to be a queer sight. Male’s only dealt with Iola’s antics because she was a ditzy female.
The grasses rustled briefly, before Iola proudly presented herself, chest puffed out and head held in a mock-regal fashion. “Here I am.” The lioness announced, a wide smile setting on her features, “Hiyah… I’m Iola~! And boy, am I glad to see you.” She stepped in on Nko, her head jutting forward dangerously close. “I haven’t seen anyone for four whole days~.” It was two. But eh… who’s counting?

Nko stopped and stared. It wasn't a cub at all! The full grown lioness approached and Nko had to reconsider. She still sounded like a cub, even after a good look, but was clearly an 'adult'. What is going on here? The rust lioness wondered.

She held her place as the other, Iola, got right up in her face. No claws, no teeth. It was ok. Her ears wiggled back and forth as the other lioness stated the time since she'd seen anyone. "Oh really, is that so?" Of course, there's no one with all the noise she's making. "It's a pleasure to meet you Iola." She sat down, hoping Iola would relax some.

"What are you doing out here by yourself? You weren't trying to hunt were you?" Seriously? With that noise, and so close her pride... It was good Nko had found her. Her mind started turning gears.

Iola circled her new ‘companion’, a bit of a hop to her step as she went around the other once, then twice. “Heee… thanks.” This was a first! The lioness wasn’t being mean to her at all! Iola couldn’t retain herself, but she was relieved that this female wasn’t giving her those queer and judgmental looks the others normally give. It always made Iola nervous and shy away from her normal… antics.

“Hmm? Just doing what I always do~. Waaaannndering.” The final word rolled off her tongue in a sing-song. Iola plopped herself directly beside Nko, about a two foot distance between them. She giggled. “What? I know how to hunt, silly~. I just don’t do it too often.” Was it because she wasn’t very good? It was plain to see that she was slimmer than the normal well-fed lioness. Iola normally napped and fretted over playthings. Food wasn’t at the forefront of her thoughts. “Whatta yah doing out here, Nkosazana? Are you hunting?” That was a silly question, what sort of huntress would call out to prey? Iola’s impish grin remained, glancing from Nko, to her own tail, that writhed and snaked along in front of her paws. Iola laid her paw heavily down on her tail, entrapping it, her attention suddenly drifting away from the lioness before her. “Neyah… gotcha…”

Nko turned her head to watch Iola circling. When her neck wouldn't turn any further, she whipped her head around to look the other way. There seemed to be a lot of childish energy there. "Thanks?" For a moment she was confused. "Why do you say that?"

"Ah. So you don't belong to a pride." She said gently then heaved a great sigh. "I didn't say you didn't know how to hunt dear. It is just.... Well it is a good thing you weren't hunting here." She looked over at the other. Inside her mind gears were turning. If she could just make this lioness grateful to her.... Possibilities arose.

"My pride might have taken it badly if your hunt accidentally took you onto our pride lands. I wouldn't want to see you get hurt." Nko laughed and tossed her head. "No dear. I wasn't hunting. I finished my patrol and came out for a moment to be by myself."

"If you'd like, I will lead you away from our lands so you wont be attacked." She smiled. "If you'd like a meal I think we can work together to catch something tasty." This ploy might work or not. Nko was still willing to give it a try. She watched as Iola trapped her own tail and covered her giggle. Such a funny lioness. She wondered how the poor thing managed to survive out here on her own.

“It’s a good thing…?” Iola repeated, her voice hinted with curiosity. Lips pursed, as the lioness silently pondered the possibilities for the –reason- she might not want to hunt in this area… something wrong with the prey? Not enough? None at all? The female opened her mouth to speak her question, only to get talked over by Nko. Ahhh, the answer. Iola’s mouth remained open, nodding her head stupidly as Nko deceived her, the lies were Iola’s truth. “Oh! I’m sorry!” The female started, once Nko mentioned the fact that her intentions to be out here… were to be alone. Iola rose with a start, but stopped once the other continued speaking.
An offer? An offer of kindess!? That was a first! Iola never happened upon that sort of thing, she normally annoyed strangers too much to get granted such civilities. The lioness’ grin only widened, a glimmer alight in her eyes as stared at Nko. Iola was eager to have some companionship after a few days of being lonesome. Maybe Nko would be her friend!? Nko was just being so NICE so far. Iola giggled at the notion. Having a friend to consol in! ‘Maybe she’ll play with me… we’ll be friends forvever~!’ Iola had to repress a giddy squeal at the thought. “Okay! Okay! If Nko wants to play the hunting game, we’ll play~!” The femme jumped to her feet, prancing forward leading them both forward in search of their meal. “So, which role you wanna play? The leader? Should I follow you~?” Iola thought for a moment, “Well, you did pick the game… it’s only fair if you lead.” She rationed, nodding her head in self satisfaction. She crept closer to Nko, bumping her shoulder to the other’s all friendly like. “Thanks for playing with me~. This’ll be great!”

"Not a problem," Nko purred when the other apologized. "I'm glad you ran into me. Sometimes the pressures of rank can become somewhat overbearing. It's good to take a moment to relax. I hope you don't mind if I use this as an excuse not to go back early." She made a pretty face.

Hunting.... game? I suppose it would be for a cub... Well no matter. "I would be happy to lead, since I know the area and places where game likes to hide." Honestly.... Nkosazana just loved to lead. It didn't really matter that the only other lioness here was a childish, non-pride member. She was in Charge! It was a heady feeling for the lioness so often under someone else.

Nko blinked as the other bumped her friendlily. She hadn't expected any close physical contact. This might be easier than she'd thought to win over the other. Quickly she rose to her feet. "Lets get started then." She glanced around then started out, heading away from the pride's lands. It wouldn't do for someone from her pride to catch her with this rogue. She doubted Iola would have the sense to be discrete.

We need a plan. Something simple I think. A purr escaped the rust lioness. "It is my pleasure. I fear I'm a bit out of practice though. It's been some time since I played games. Perhaps in the future we can play more." They were closing in on the place Nko remembered. "Alright Iola. I want you to sit here while I get into position. When you see my tail wave, then I want you to run at the prey and scare it towards me. Can you do that?" She hoped it was simple enough for the other.

“Oh… it’s okay. I’ve yet to meet another adult that’ll play with me.” It was clear that the lilac lioness understood that most adults weren’t cub-like as she was. “But suuuure… I can show you the ropes. Who knows, you might like it too.” Iola ventured, her voice surfacing in a sing-song as she pranced along Nko. A new found energy brining about a spring in her step. It wasn’t very long before the pair reached the apparent destination. Nko took the lead easily, and Iola was naturally compelled to listen when the female heeded her to stay in position. Iola was acting as a cub might to a parent. Blind faith. The female nodded her head silently, having enough sense to know that this wasn’t the time to be loud. It was a stealth game up until it was required for her to provide the distraction.
“Uh huh.” She murred in response, already crouching into the brush that did a surprisingly well job of concealing her purple pelt. Iola curled her tail around her paws, ears flattened to the back of her skull as her eyes fixed on Nko, waiting for that signal. She knew she couldn’t mess this up. She needed Nko to be impressed.. to want to play with her again. ‘I wont mess up….’

"I see. It must be hard not having anyone to play with. Certainly, allows me a chance to get in touch with my inner kitten." She purred to make it sound amusing and fun.

Nko was finding she liked this lioness very much. It was so easy to boss her around and she didn't seem to mind. Back in the pride she had to watch her words closely, lest she offend someone. This lioness however seemed perfectly willing to listen.

Quick as a flash, Nko left the other hiding and scampered into a good spot. Looking around for prey that might come near enough, she raised her tail for Iola to see. There was the signal. Now if they were lucky there would be a good snack for both of them in a few minutes. Her paws tingled with anticipation.

Iola had lost the trail of Nko once the female slipped away into the grasses. The other lioness did well in concealing herself. The only rustling to the grasses were made by the winds. Cobalt optics scanned the area before her, peeled for the familiar fluff of reddish-brown fur at the end of a lighter colored tail. Soon Iola caught the swaying length in her peripherals. Flagging the signal, Iola took the hint and sprang forward with a mighty ‘yip!’.

Forepaws outstretched and dramatically bounding forward, the female sprang to make her appearance known rather than to gain distance. If her intended victims didn’t hear her the first time as she tore through the brush, Iola continued to spew roars and growls as she pounced around. Nko said she just had to ‘scare’ off the prey. So Iola made a game of being the loudest she could possibly be! She didn’t even attempt to chase their quarry, instead zig-zagging and herding their prey towards the waiting Nko. “Brwaugh~!” Iola raked her claw sideways at the flank of one of the quarry when she drew near to it. The creature hastily scurried away, leaving Iola to instead entertain herself with rolling around on the ground.

“Whoo whowhowhowho~!” She laughed, flattening the grass as she rolled side to side. Her job was completed successfully as far as she was concerned. Rolling for a few moments more… the female stopped once she realized Nko was still with her! Iola perked her head up from the brush suddenly, hoping she hadn’t missed Nko taking down one of the animals.

She pulled her tail back down, hoping the prey hadn't been alerted to her location. Had Iola seen it? Nko fretted for a moment. She debated and almost started to raise her tail for a second signal, when a loud bundle of fur burst forth.

She stared at the loud display the lioness was creating. It hadn't been what she thought it would be, but it did seem effective. Pulled back to her task of hunt by the sounds of many footsteps as animals tried to leave the area with the apparently berserking lioness. Nko listened intently as she scanned through the grasses of her hiding spot.

There! Her sensitive ears caught the sound of stumbling. Nko leaped from her hiding to dash across the earth. In a ploom of dust, she took down a straggling, young zebra colt. Her long canines quickly sank into its neck to end its struggles.

Picking up her kill, Nko trotted back over to Iola. She set it down between them as she got near. Purring, she sat down and curled her tail around her. "That was really a good job. You got them running right past me." Nko smiled approval at Iola.
