I'm teaching a mythology class at my freedom based alternative school, and what is it we do? Watch Xena. That's right. I went through the entire episode list, and plucked out all the episodes myth/historically related, and then sorted the types of mythology, and the actual stories that go with the episode plot line. We're going in order so far, but that could always change. I'm totally open to your input, comments, and ideas for future showings.
In the next post I'll write about the classes that we've done.

First off, lemme explain my school a little better. It's a K-12 school with a grand total of 43 students, where everyone's allowed to pick their own curriculum, schedule, and decide on rules and punishments in a democratic setting. I've taught a lot of classes, including origami, and grammar. xd And so far, the mythology with Xena class has been really well recieved.
1st week- Introduction to the class, had ensnared the attention of all the middle schoolers, which isn't always easy. (they amount to about 10 kids total, and they don't have the greatest attention spans.) But a few younger, and older students as well. I started by talking about Pandora, and also self fufilling prophecies from Greek mythology for a little while. Specifically Oedipus. Once everyone seemed to have soaked in the discussion, and we wrote some key things on the board, I started the episode Cradle of Hope. They all really liked it, especially the baby tossing. They drew a face on a football after the class and started tossing it around like Xena. What they learned (non-mythology related): How to toss a baby.
2nd week- Wrote the word "Amazons" on the board, and asked what everyone thought of when they see that word. A 13 year old said "Ooh! I know! They're really tall, and they, like, don't wear a lot of clothes." But then a 10 year old mentioned the legend of Heracles stealing the girdle of the amazon queen. I ranted for a while on how big of a deal the amazon women were, as you can imagine. I'm a big amazon enthusiast. Then we watched Hooves and Harlots. I pointed out when they mentioned Artemis, and any other important things. The same 13 year old mentioned above was about to say "Damn, those women are hot" when I hit the brim of his hat with a spoon. What they learned (non-mythology related): How to kill a centaur.
3rd week- I wanted to read the Iliad with the class, but I realized that would be ridiculously time-consuming, and some of the students are under 10 years old anyway. So that day I tried to recap the key parts, and found a picture of Helen of Troy in a book, had some conversation (and Maddy was right, the tween boys made three references to condoms when I mentioned the Trojan Horse.), and then watched Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts. I told them Xena and Helen used to be lovers, and I made remarks about Pervicus. But I also pointed out Menelaus, Paris, and other references to the story. What they learned: The proper way to emmasculate an unconscious man.
4th week- We had a short day (we went to an apple orchard. whee ), so only watched the first 15 minutes of Altared States, but we had enough time beforehand to explain that the Bible is just another form of mythology, and I found the Abraham and Isaac bit, and read it aloud. We had a good conversation as to why someone would be crazy enough to do that, and then talked about initiation in other religions. Then we finished the episode the next week. What they learned: How to spot subtext.
6th week- We moved on to season 2 (I guess going sort of in order), skipping Prometheus, Death in Chains, The Titans, and all the other episodes I didn't feel like showing them. And instead, we watched the campiest and most offensive episode to Greek myths: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. We read the story or Orpheus and Eurydice, and talked about Bacchus, and his madwomen. But I had to clarify like 5 times who Bacchus was in the episode, because it really just makes no sense. Close to Halloween, so how could I not show that one? Also, first episode with Joxer. What they learned: How to groom a talking head.

I can't wait for you to get to Ulysses to talk about the Odyssey!!! I think that one actually had a lot of the myth incorporated into it. I mean, it mentioned the cyclops Ulysses blinded and then it showed the sirens (granted, Xena didn't out bamf the sirens in the real version). ... Now I want to go watch that episode.

I actually need to read that yet! Maybe we can read the shorter version with pictures for the discussion part before watching it. ninja There's actually someone named Ulysses in the class, though. He used to be my 5 year old best friend, and now he's 9, and has a crush on Vaerna. xd xd xd

I'm not sure, but he may have also gone by Odysseus. Of course, the kid in your class can totally feel awesome. Like, "Holy cow! I'm an awesome warrior in the cool show!" ... Or something similar. I'd feel awesome if there was someone with my name in the show. Alas, Angelica only shows up in Rugrats and she was a b***hbrat.

If only all the Borias stuff was packed into one episode. You could teach them about the mongols. I love Mongolian history. whee Unfortunately, being a flashback character, he's all over the place. There isn't a single episode that would really cover it.
But you could show them The Debt and teach them about Taoism. 4laugh I'm actually a Taoist, in a not-really-religious kind of way. It's so cool that a character from Xena founded my not-really-religion. heart lol
And you could show them A Royal Couple of Thieves and teach them about the real Autolycus. 3nodding

I had no idea. But that reminds me of this site! I have yet to really read any of it, but it's about all of the little coincidences and references Xena makes throughout the show in a conspiracy theory kind of way. http://typesandpatterns.com/xena/patterns.html

I would have liked to watch Xena in school. Of course there was no Xena when I was in school, but something fun like that.

Haha, instead of school house rock, or videos on "good touch, bad touch"? Yeah, for sure. I've totally started a new Xenite children army, and it's pretty awesome.

Yes they are, I've just lost count of the weeks and episodes, I know we watched Devi, the Furies, and Fins Femmes and Gems. But most of the kids started watching the show at home, too, and no one finished the last homework assignment I gave them. They are definitely a Xenite army, but not so much a mythological guru army.
