so, i'm a senior, (oh and btw i'm in marching band because here theres no difference between the band and the colorguard biggrin ) and for those of you who are my age or older, you know that this time of year = college apps.... so i'm going along, trying to fill out the online app to the best of my ability (leaving weird stuff for my mom to do later haha) and i come to the "extra curriculars" section...to add one, it says:
What was the activity name?
During which high school years were you involved?
How much time did you devote to the activity? Hours per Week:
Weeks per Year:
Briefly describe the activity. (Entries over 160 characters will be truncated.)
can someone explain to me how its possible to describe band like this? band is my LIFE!!! i know i still can talk about it in the essay, but we have a few practices during the summer, so does that mean 52 weeks per year??? and hours per week varies sooo much throughout the year...usually 6 hours, but comps add a whole day, and i don't even wanna mention band camp! sweatdrop and then theres 160 characters...do what with?? sorry i'm just...idk what to say cuz theres too much haha any advice??? burning_eyes

Just do averages for the numbers. And generally, "briefly describe the activity" means what you had to do for it in terms of responsibilities and functions.

Uh...you don't do band 52 weeks a year. Unless you practice 24/7 you won't come close...Band Camp really doesn't count and Summer Band isn't all summer.
Also, extra curricular means things you do as an extra BESIDES school. Band Camp and Comps really don't count for those...

Actually, band does count as an extra-curricular because it involves out-of-school activities like competitions, concerts, and the like.

Considering that band CAMP occurs before the school year begins and is thus not in the 'curricular' school schedule, it is considered extracurricular, as is all of marching band.
Concert band is not extracurricular since it's typically an in-class experience. Granted some schools have marching band (and jazz band, for that matter) as a class but 90% of the activity is after school or outside of school rehearsal.
Anyway, to relate to the OP:
How many rehersals do you have a week, and how long are they? Add this up for Hours per Week. How many weeks does your marching season run for, including your summer rehearsals and band camp? This is your weeks per year.

yeah i figured it out. our practices are 6 hours per week, but then theres comps for a lot of weekends, plus extra sectionals and such. and actually, the guard (which i'm in btw) does practice most weeks in the summer. granted its only 1 day for like 2-3 hours, but its still in summer...anyways haha i figured it out smile though i think i'm going to have to write a whole personal statement about band, cuz now i understand the "tell us what isn't talked about in the rest of the application" thing they tell you haha
