When your friends ask you about the scriptures, then want to converse in heated debate about the verses....what do you do?
I just ended a conversation about verses in Exodus chapter 22 verse 17 where it talks about the Lord's laws of integrity and godly conduct. My friend keeps insisting that his Bible (the New American Bible) is correct and mine (the King James Bible of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) is wrong.
Why do they, being our friends and strangers ask honest questions about the scriptures and take offense when we give honest answers?

It's so hard not to get frustrated. I have been in constant debates about the scriptures, doctrine, and other things that pertain to the Church. Almost everyone that has debated with me thinks the doctrine of the Church concerning Heavenly Father, modern revelation, prophets, etc. is heresy.
I usually just provide them with answers that are in the scriptures and then ultimately it's up to them to decide whether or not they want to accept it or not. A conclusion I have come to as to why people don't like to hear the honest answers is because people don't like truth and when it's given to them it goes against the grain of the comfort zone they have built up.

I don't know all the answers. At all. But I do know that if you just emphasize that God loves them, and how you know this... it works out. Help them realize that God loves us so much that he wouldn't leave us all alone here, and he wants the best for us. Overall, just don't let them get to the bashing stage. Give what you can of your two cents, if they don't listen, let them know that God loves them and when they're ready to hear more, come talk to you, but don't fight or argue, because the spirit will leave. Even direct them to mormon.org, because there are missionaries there (I was one of them, so I know how it works if you have some questions on that...) who can and will answer their questions, even if they do argue. They'll basically do the same thing I suggest, try to help them without being antagonistic, then if they become too ornery, give them a link and wish them a good day. It depends on the person of course, they'll go by the spirit.
(And sorry if that doesn't make much sense... I'm running on low sleep, so my brain isn't functioning very well currently...)
