Hmph. Trine: Home of the Runts.

All of which are bigger than you, Keela reminded her green as they circled low and slow over the wild vegetation, looking for a good place to land and begin searching.

If they live long enough, sure. Remind me why we are here again?

We're looking for Mystweed. As is just about every other dragonrider available.

Ah, right, that plant. ... Why do we need it again?

The greenrider rolled her eyes at this point. Don't worry about it. Just know that we need to find it. And as much of it as possible.

The green's eyes whirled with excitement at this. More than the other riders, right? Excellent! Competition! We shall find more than any of the others, and the fastest as well! Taith trumpeted her confidence on this matter, and Keela couldn't help but grin. Taith's competitive spirit was infectious.

No doubt we will. Touch down over there; that looks like a promising place to start searching. From what she had heard from other riders and they lack of success, mystweed was very rare. That didn't matter though, for they would find some. Even if not by the end of the day, they would keep returning until they had. No silly plant was going to best them.

E'lai heard the trumpet of another dragon, and Eltimioth's head swerved towards the sound. Another green and her rider are touching down, it sounds like, Eltimioth reported.

I suppose it's good manners to go greet them, E'lai offered. They probably weren't from Trine, or Eltimioth would have mentioned them by name. Still, all the weyrs were searching around Malvren and Trine, so it wasn't unusual that a lot of unfamiliar dragons were flying around as of late. Besides, we're not finding anything here anyway.

True enough, Eltimioth said, disgruntled that the plant they'd thought perhaps might be the elusive weed had proved to be something else entirely. Ho! she called out, broadcasting on a wide mental band to the green they'd heard.

The pair touched down and immediately set to work on hunting down the plant. Taith only knew what to look for because it was being pictured so vividly in Her's mind at the moment. They had hardly been looking for even a minute however before they were interrupted.

Ho!

Dragon and rider alike looked up in surprise at the call, although Taith was only surprised because Hers was. "What the shards?" She wasn't accustomed to hearing dragons speak to her other than her own.

Wait, she spoke to you as well? she asked, bristling a bit at this news.

Yes, although I think it may have just been to the area at large, Keela pointed out, going back to searching since the other dragon wasn't anywhere in sight. Taith wasn't as easily settled as Hers though.

This is Taith and Keela of Benden Weyr. What dragon speaks to Mine without showing herself? the green asked, none too pleased. Despite the other pair not being present yet, the green held herself up a bit taller, wings raised half-way off her back.

"Taith, calm down. It's not like anyone is going to jump us," the greenrider remarked wryly, not even glancing over at her dragon as she hunted for the plant.

I don't like strange dragons talking to you.

Well tough. Now get over here and help me already.

Oh yeah! The plant! Taith had momentarily forgotten about them, but she kept herself on the alert as she resumed the search, waiting for the other dragon's reply all the while.

Taith and Keela of Benden Weyr, Eltimioth relayed to her rider with a mental hiss. Benden riders, on their weyr's lands! Her eyes whirled orange at the mere thought of it.

We've already hailed them, E'lai admitted with a sigh. If he'd known it was a Benden green, he probably wouldn't have bothered. But they have a... He hesitated to say "right" but that wasn't quite the word. They have permission to be here, he settled for instead. Tell them who we are, we might as well exchange pleasantries. And perhaps he could keep an eye on them to see if they came up with anything worth taking back to their weyr? He was sure the weyrleaders would appreciate being kept informed on if Benden was managing to acquire the weed.

Very well. Eltimioth sounded resigned. She wasn't going to enjoy this...

Given Taith's reply, Eltimioth had argued for going to meet them before speaking again, to which E'lai had reluctantly agreed. It wasn't that large of an area, and heading back into the air helped them find the large green all the easier, and they landed within sight of the other pair, just barely within shouting range for the two humans. Eltimioth and E'lai of Trine Weyr show themselves, the smaller green said haughtily as she tucked her wings shut, her rider dismounting.

They come, Taith remarked to Hers as she spotted the other green and rider pair coming toward them.

And so they do, Keela replied, looking up in the direction that her dragon was watching. She glanced back at her own green and noted the tensed position. Behave yourself, Taith. We are on their land after all, not our own. The green let out a small rumble of complaint, but otherwise relaxed her stance.

They watched as the Trine pair landed, and Taith relayed the introduction to her rider (minus the snotty end bit). "Well met, Rider E'lai," she called out. "I apologize if Taith's earlier enthusiasm distracted you from your own work. She can be a bit loud at times."

Said Taith was not paying much attention to the pleasantries between the riders, instead taking the time to assess the other green. She was only of an average size, and was a bit more lithe than usual. A speedy thing perhaps, but not useful for much else. Satisfied by her evaluation, she relaxed her stance even further, seeing as the other dragon would be no threat to them whatsoever. She could snap her like a twig should she try to do anything to Hers.

"No more so than Eltimioth, I assure you," E'lai called in reply, mildly apologetic. She had been broadcasting loudly early and he wouldn't be surprised if she'd spoken to Keela in the process. It was a habit of the green's that had caused some trouble in the past... "Well met to you, Rider Keela, and your Taith as well." That was a rather sizeable green dragon she had there...

Bulky and ugly,
Eltimioth muttered darkly to her rider. E'lai sighed.

Though she may not be as attractive as you, please don't go around insulting her, all right? You don't need to start a fight. He was quite sure the 'no fights' rule from when Benden was last visiting Trine still applied, and punishments from above would no doubt be swift and severe.

Eltimioth did not answer as she lifted her head high. The other green may have been bigger but that did not mean better. The other dragon colors were built for such things; the purpose of greens was to be light and speedy. And Eltimioth was definitely the better looking of the two greens. But everything in Trine was better than in Benden; why else would Benden have to come to Trine to get their precious weeds?

Well, at least the rider seemed hospitable enough, even if their partners didn't seem to be getting off to the best of starts. "Well, I suppose we are both out here for the same purpose, so we may as well resume our given tasks," Keela remarked, giving the other greenrider a polite nod before resuming her prior search.

Taith's gaze lingered on the pair a moment longer before she too set to work. She wasn't going to allow these Trine nothings to distract her from their mission. They had a plant to find, and they had better find it soon.

E'lai nodded in agreement and set about to surveying their new area for the elusive Mystweed. Combing the ground was slow, tedious work, and all too often a promising bit of leaf proved to be something completely different. Looks like nothing once again...

A golden flit burst out of between and landed on Eltimioth's head, chittering angrily. How dare the green one leave her behind? Eltimioth may have been a big dragon, but Kirel was a gold, albeit a firelizard, but the flit saw no reason why Eltimioth shouldn't obey her regardless. E'lai winced and sent calming thoughts at the gold, who trilled happily catching sight of Her E'lai, and dove from the green's head to land on his shoulder. "Sorry we left you behind," he told the gold apologetically, stroking her tiny headknobs. Kirel chirped and snuggled in around E'lai's neck for the long haul.

You don't need to apologize to the tiny mad one either,
Eltimioth muttered darkly.

Following shortly after the gold was a diamond-pattered crimson flit, giving a sad trill that her friend had left her so suddenly. Weren't they having fun back at the Weyr? The crimson noticed the other greenrider pair, and her sadness quickly changed to surprise and curiosity. Oh! Who were they? She hadn't seen them before.

Taith was entirely to amused by the spectacle between the gold and Eltimioth, and she made no effort to hide it. Are you scolded by flits often? she asked, the amusement clear in her voice.

"Looks like crimsons are popping up everywhere these days," Keela remarked with a small chuckle when she noticed the firelizards with the other greenrider. "Those two girls yours?" It was almost an amusing thought to think that this fellow might have one representative of each female color there was, even if one of them was a mutant.

Her ego is larger than her size, Eltimioth replied stiffly, suspecting that this might very much be the case with the Benden green as well.

Kirel trilled to her friend, sending a feeling of apology. When she realized E'lai and Eltimioth had left without her, she'd been so angry she'd left to find them straightaway. She was glad that Ruby had come along though.

"Ah, just the gold. The crimson belongs to a friend," E'lai said, hoping that S'ren wouldn't mind too much. Still, the Benden greenrider seemed curious, not condemning, and he was puzzled by her comment. Crimsons, everywhere? "I didn't think there were crimsons to be found elsewhere but the new Weyrs," he said, hedging his words carefully. Ah, hadn't Benden had a Hatching recently? But--no--they couldn't...could they?

Isn't that true of golds in general? Taith replied, still amused, but for slightly different reasons now. They're a rather bossy lot.

Ruby chirped back in understanding, landing on E'lai's opposite shoulder in the meantime. Hers made her stay behind sometimes too. It was a very sad thing. At least there were still fun things to do!

"And you guys have a good amount of them, dont'cha?" she replied with a faint smirk. "Two at the last hatching, right? Never seen one as a firelizard before. Didn't think atypical flits usually made it."

Hmph. Don't see what the fuss is about with all of these runts, Taith remarked to Hers. Nor why you're so tolerant of them.

They're still living things, even if they are unnatural mutations, the greenrider thought back with the mental equivalent of a shrug. Don't necessarily prefer them myself, but it's not like they have a contagious disease or anything. If Trine and Malvren wished to breed these little experiments for themselves, then so be it. The only reason Benden had one now was because she had impressed from the egg and gotten Hers to save her.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 07, 2010 2:54 am

One might say it is their prerogative, Eltimioth said, though a hint of disagreement with her own statement snuck into her mental tone. Yes, the golds were born to lead, but that didn't mean they had to rub everyone's faces in it. That younger gold at Trine, the tiny one, she was somewhat different than the average gold. Eltimioth approved.

Kirel agreed; and what a fun thing they had stumbled into! It seemed there was some kind of tension in the air, but it wasn't quite a bad one. E'lai was very curious about something.

"My friend's timing was impeccable," he said with a nonchalant shrug, wishing the Benden greenrider would be more straightforward. But he couldn't ask specifically without being completely obvious to his motive. "Yes, two crimsons at our last double Hatching," he said, choosing his words carefully again. Double Hatching--when was the last time Benden had been able to boast of one of those? And a queen along with those two crimsons. "And Benden had a Hatching recently--how did that fare?" he asked politely. He expected her to dodge his question, but he might get lucky.

Eltimioth did not approve of this sneaking around, especially not if juicy gossip was to be had. Remembering that Taith had not approved of Eltimioth's speaking directly to Taith's rider and also E'lai had warned not cause to a fuss, Eltimioth addressed her remarks for Taith alone. So, has Benden acquired a crimson of their own? They could still be breeding dragons, and Eltimioth was inclined to think, in their situation, surely one breeding dragon was better than no breeding dragons, since they could not have a queen without this Mystweed.

Oooh, curious things were good! Usually. Music was good too though. She liked when her human attempted to play.

Yes, yes, no reason to bring up the fact that it was a double Hatching again. The entirety of Pern already knew that. "Well, you already know there was no queen, I am sure," she replied nonchalantly. "Other than that though it went smoothly. Every dragonet impressed, and we now have nine new Jr. Weyrlings."

The disgruntled change of eye color in the green answered the question before she did. Unfortunately, she replied. Fortunate for her though I suppose. She Impressed from inside the egg and called to Hers for aide. Had she not already found Hers (during the Touching likely), she would have met the same end as the rest of the dragons who were too weak to hatch from their own shell.

The greenrider cast Hers a sharp look out of the corner of her eye when she realized what the two dragons were discussing. ... Taith-love, I don't know if we were supposed to make that public yet.

What does it matter? Everyone's going to find out eventually.

Keela had to work to withhold a very exasperated sigh. And this was why greens were not in charge...
PostPosted: Thu Oct 07, 2010 3:28 am

Music sounded like fun, Kirel thought. E'lai did not even try. But there was another greenrider who tried to coax the firelizards into trilling in unison. She was fun!

"Congratulations to your Weyr on a successful Hatching," E'lai said politely. He was already holding a pleasant mask on his face to keep from showing his curiosity--one that came in handy when Eltimioth smugly relayed him the news she'd gleaned from the Benden green. He managed to look not entirely sledgehammered in the head, only briefly surprised before his face smoothed over again into neutrality. They--what?!

Impressed in the egg and her new rider broke her free, Eltimioth continued breezily to E'lai, pleased to have gotten hold of such interesting gossip. Benden with a crimson!

E'lai wondered if "serves them right" was the proper expression to use here. At least if they ruined one of their own, it would be apparent the Old Weyrs were really good for nothing. Dragons were too precious a resource to waste, and since the distasteful task of breaking free of the egg had already occurred, surely their hidebound attitudes would be forced to re-evaluate their positions. If not, Benden's crimson would surely be welcome at Malvren or Trine.

Yes! She had seen her before. Very nice human. Her green was very friendly as well.

Knowing that the beans had already been spilled, Keela didn't have a hard time at all spotting the brief look of surprise that flitted across his face. "Greens certainly are chatty things, aren't they," she remarked wryly, reaching up and idly patting hers on the side of the neck. "I don't suppose amidst ensuing gossip the source can be conveniently lost?" After what had happened here in this Weyr, there was no way that such news would at all stay quiet. If only there was a way to Time It and direct themselves elsewhere without creating some sort of stupid paradox...
