"We are to meet with one of the Candidates and go searching -here- for this weed. We need to do our best, Dar. This could make us known to the Weyrwoman and be good for us later when we join a wing." N'ymi sat on a rock in front of her dragon, studied a worn and slightly messed map. The blue rider wrinkled her nose and tried to start again.
She was not big into reading and could barely understand the symbols and tight scribbling along the side. Groaning, she rolled the map up and looked up at her blue, happy that she was with him. Silently, they had a moment. Slowly, she leaned against his leg, putting all her strength and love into a simple hug. No one could complete her like he could. And that was where the Candidate found them.

It was an honor to serve your Weyr in any capacity. Be it by searching through mouldy old hides, or planting things in the ground. Sometimes, serving the Weyr was a very good thing. Getting out into Trine's lands? That was a very good thing. Jalarant hadn't been out of the Weyr more than he'd been allowed for work, and he'd liked the long, open lands. It would be a joy to get out there again to search.
His pace slowed as he spotted the blue and his rider. Was that...? Ah, he hadn't seen much of Nay.... N'yumi since her Impression to Daroth. There'd been a brief greeting at the hatching fest, and then...
Well, Jalarant didn't remember too much of the rest of the fest, having 'enjoyed' himself with the provided wine a bit too much. It was a great kindness from the Weyr, allowing those who failed to Impress to take a way out of all the festivities.
He stopped a respectful distance away from the rider and dragon, clasping his hands in front of himself. "Daroth, N'yumi. Good day. I'm supposed to go on a weed hunt with a rider. Would that be you?" He called, still standing back. He wouldn't approach unless he was supposed to meet them. No use bothering them more than needed to.

A male. Daroth sniffed. He turned and peered at the boy who interrupted him with his Nasuymi. But, he was being polite and respectful towards his rider. The blue stared, an uncanny stare as if trying to see inside the boy, and then looked away. Is this the one?
N'ymi quickly jerked back and looked. This boy! She remembered him. One of the very, very few males who was on her good side. A hand still on Daroth's leg, she gave a fleeting smile and turned to face him straight on. Jalarant. She did not forget a name so quickly. Especially with one whom she had done many a candidate choir with on more than one occasion. She would not hold him to protocol, after all, she was only a Sr. Weyrling and just barely starting to fly. Oh no, today they would be walking. Granted, they would both be on Daroth's back but walking nonetheless. "Jalarant. Yeah, tha' wuld be me. We're serchin' fer sum weed juss outside o' Trine Hold. No flyin' t'day. But mehbe ya cin help me wif this map?"
And she held the soiled skin out to him. "Juss approach slow li' an' Dar wun be ta fussy wif ya."

A bit of good, healthy fear never hurt anyone. Jalarant had a very understandable fear of dragons he didn't know that well. They were large and maulings would be very painful. He did indeed approach carefully, bobbing his head at Daroth.
"Thank you for accompanying me, the both of you." He said, extending the thanks to N'yumi as well. "If I may...?" He asked, holding a hand out for the map. He wasn't about to loom over her shoulder while her dragon was around. Shells above knew he'd somehow get the big fellow to think he was attacking N'yumi.

"Nah probs, Jalarant. And ye, here ya go," she handed him the map and then turned back to Daroth, making sure he was placid. The blue was not big on other males around her nor did she care for them either. But she did not mind him who had worked just as hard as she had when they were Candidates. Murmuring to her blue, she let the boy look over the map.
I do not like him Nasuymi. What if he wants something from you? Daroth huffed.
He won't want from me. Trust me. N'ymi reassured her love. There was no male on Pern who could ever turn her attention from the brightly colored blue in front of her.

Luckily, Jalarant wasn't privy to the conversation of the two. Knowing that Daroth didn't like him would only have made him more worried. He stared at the map and tipped it one way, then the other. "We won't be far at all," He said finally, rolling it back up. "Probably no more than ten dragonslenghts out? The spot on the map looks to be a...." He paused searching for the right word.
When he found it, he snapped his fingers. "A depression in the ground, and not too far off by a stream. It'd be hard to find by air, but on the ground it'll be easier to spot."

N'ymi looked up at Daroth and gave him a sad smile. She motioned him down and rubbed his snout, looking him in the eyes. It was obvious that they were close, even for a dragon and rider. Turning back to Jalarant, she stepped away and over to him to look at the map. "Dar, do ya mind havin' Jalarant on ya too?"
Immediately, the blue's eyes changed red with aggitation. I don't want him with us. You are my rider.
"You stay. I promise we'll be a'right. An' I know yer mah rider, 'e ain't tryin' to take ya. We juss need ta get there quick." N'ymi reassured the blue and waved her friend to get close to her. "Be nice an' look at 'im. You need ta keep 'im safe like you wuld me."

Well, apparently Daroth was still a bit... Iffy about other people. He'd heard that Hatchlings were very protective of their riders, perhaps Daroth was still? At N'yumi's urging, he stepped closer, watching the dragon warily. He wouldn't like: He was a bit scared of this whole situation. Usually Blues weren't the ones to be scared of: It was the vastly differing temperaments in greens, the Bronzes, and Queens you had to watch out for.
He was a very prettily colored Blue, as well. Such a shame that even the Dragon seemed to hate him: He liked to think he got along with N'yumi. "It would be a great help if you would, Daroth..." He ventured, his face conveying a bit of the worry that he felt.

Daroth moved so that he was staring directly at Jalarant. He huffed slightly, sending a warm breath of air at the boy before him. Well, he was a Candidate and maybe he could help the small man not be so offensive to his and others. Blinking one great eye, he touched the boy's mind. You will do as Nasuymi asks?
"Dar! I ain't ta one in charge 'ere. We gotta work t'gether ta find this weed ever'one's fussin' 'bout. I kin trust Jalarant an' I need ya ta trust me, 'kay?" N'ymi smacked his nose, causing the blue to jerk back and look upset at her. Smiling, she motioned the blue to bend down and then turned to her friend. "Fron' or back?"

Poor Jalarant's eyes nearly crossed when the Dragon breathed on him. Um. Yeah. This wasn't looking to be the best idea... He would be doing whatever N'yumi asked, if only because the Blue was Hers, and he would likely respond well to her. He really would rather not get mauled today. He would've responded to the Dragon with an affirmative, but N'yumi spoke to Daroth.
"Er..." He blinked at N'yumi, then shrugged. "I don't... Have a preference? Whichever you prefer, really." Whatever would make Daroth happier would be the preferred answer.

Daroth was crouched down low and got comfortable. The blue closed his wings in close and rumbled at N'ymi, upset with her for doing this to him but not so mad he would disobey her. Ready.
"Whelp. Prolly back. Wuld make Dar feel bet'r. I will climb up an' the' ya grab my arm an' I'll pull ya up? 'Kay?" N'ymi scrambled up the blue and settled herself. Daroth bended his knee slightly and she reached down to offer her arm. "C'mon, up ya go!"

The mining man was a little awkward getting up on the dragon, but he managed without any kicks or horrible falls. He seated himself behind the young woman with a sigh. "Thank you, Daroth, for taking me on. And thank you, N'yumi, for the help today." He said, probably a bit more nervous than he should've been on the dragon. It was highly unlikely that the dragon would buck him off or whatever.

Daroth merely snorted but got up gently and began to move forward. He wasn't tropping around like he normally did but instead was taking careful and slow steps so that his rider could keep her eyes looking for the plant. With his wings pulled close and his bright blue hide, he stood out against the scenery.
N'ymi nodded and settled against her blue. He was going slow enough that they could look for the weed. She tried to spot wet areas like pools of water or moist dirt. It had been drilled in her head that the plant liked water but it was very hard to spot. But she remembered something about dew or drops and tapped her blue's shoulder to get him to stop. "Wha' d'ya think, is tha' teh plant there?"
((EDIT for ROLL: 20, not the plant))
The girl slid down Daroth's back, leaving Jalarant on the blue. Focused, she moved and got down to see if the plant that she had spotted was the mystweed. But underneath the small tree it turned out to be some sort of sapling. Grumpy, she turned back and kicked a rock. "All plants lo' teh same. Why culdn't it be bright red or sumthin'?"

Jalarant carefully slipped off after N'yumi had. He didn't... really want to remain on the dragon that obviously didn't care for him. He landed a bit clumsily, but regained his balance and started to look around. Hmmmm. This looked somewhat promising, at least.
"That would make things easier." He mentioned. "But the good things have to hide, I guess."
[[After the dice roll... 97, Dead plant, Goddamnit! xD]]
Jalarant frowned at a plant that lay withered in the sun. Like it hadn't had enough water or something... "N'yumi? Doesn't this look like... Well, what it used to be?" Ugh! So close!

Daroth looked at them both with obvious confusion. The blue settled down into a slight hollow (hopefully there were no plants under him!) and closed his eyes for a light nap.
N'ymi frowned and began to look near the dead plant that Jalarant had found. The plant was brown and looked like it hadn't received any rain for a while. The blue rider began to move away small bushes and low crawling vines, hoping to pull something up.
[EDIT FOR ROLL: Wrong plant!]
After tugging up some vines for a promising looking plant, N'ymi tossed the vegetation behind her, not paying any attention to where it landed. She tugged up the plant and cursed quite loudly. "Culd least gro' t'gether!"
