Makosa walked carefully, making sure to only step onto grass. He had come to the conclusion that grass was safer. Rocks tended to have too many emotions attached, whereas grass died and was regrown in the different seasons. Less memories. He sighed heavily. His mother was still sick, and was sleeping not far away, hiding away in the den they were using for the time being. It was early morning and the cub was getting drowsy, like his mother, he stayed awake at night and spent the day sleeping.

"Don't go too far!" A familiar voice called out, causing Makosa to draw to a stop and glance back. The black bird was sitting on a branch not far away, keeping a close watch on the leopon cub. "I need to keep a watch on both you and your mother, so you can only go a little way away from the den, okay my boy?" The bird was a familiar babysitter the cub, as his mother was often exhausted when Makosa was wide awake, so the bird was left to watch over him.

"Fine, Adelai'e," Makosa said, nodding lightly and careful to move back a few steps, settling down to play with a flower. There wasn't much else to do. He yawned loudly, stretching his back.

Aina'nusu had wandered away from mother and grandmother yet again and was chasing ghosts. That, at least, was what her mother called the people Aina saw that no one else could. They were flickers of lions, leopards, cheetahs and more, and they ran and they walked and never once acknowledged anyone who wasn't also a ghost.

Mother said she could see them because her father was a god. Aina'nusu wasn't really sure, considering she'd never met him in her whole life, but she nodded sagely whenever the subject came up.

She was chasing a black and white ghost when she saw something black and much more solid than any ghost over in the grass. If it was solid, it was someone she could talk to!

The cheeton bounded over to the black ball of fuzz calling out as she ran. "Hiiiiiiii!"

Adelai'e stiffened when he spotted something bounding towards his young ward, but relaxed when he realised it was simply another cub. The bird was a little overprotected, yes, but he didn't want to stop Makosa from making friends - though he would step in if things got too much for the fragile male. His visions made him paranoid usually and the male bird ruffled his feathers, shifting in the tree. Well, he'd just watch and make sure it was all okay.

Makosa's head jerked up at the sound of another voice, his eyes widening at the side of a blurr of something coming towards him. He leaped to his feet, stumbling back one or two steps, before realising it was a cub. Oh. Well, he glanced nervously up at Adelai'e, making sure the bird was still there before looking back at the female cub.

"Hi," he called back, sounding a little timid. She seemed pretty bouncy and happy, so it seemed obvious that she was friendly, or so he hoped.

Aina'nusu looked around at the bird and at the other cub and smiled. "What'cha doin'?" she asked curiously. They didn't seem to be doing much but maybe she was wrong and maybe there was a fun game to play and she would much rather play a game with a cub who was really here than chase ghosts any day.

Besides, when she was talking to real people she didn't usually see ghosts and that made everything easier.

Belatedly, she remembered that Manners said she was supposed to introduce herself. "Oh and my name's Aina'nusu, what's yours?" Her statement and question came out very fast, as if the speed could move it back to the beginning of the interaction where Manners said it was supposed to be.

Makosa hesitated, but she seemed...nice. So he lifted himself up a little, and peered curiously at her. "Oh, I was just...sitting here. Playing with flowers." He motioned to the flowers that he had been playing with before. They were rather boring. "What are you doing?"

Makosa smiled a little at her rushed conversation. "I'm Makosa, a pleasure to meet you, Aina'nusu. Can I call you Aina?" He asked, somewhat shyly. His mother had always raised him to be polite, but her name was kinda long.

Adelai'e fluttered in the tree, narrowing his gaze. He stretched his wings out, and glided over to land on Makosa's head, feet digging into the young male's tuff of hair. "And I'm Adelai'e, Makosa's gaurdian." That was the easier way of saying it, considering he did act as Makosa's gaurdian when Makosa was busy.

Makosa smiled, twisting a little to glance up at the bird. "Yes, Adelai'e is being kind and allowing me to come outside the den for a while."

"Flowers? Flowers are fun," the cub stated. They were also pretty and soft. Mostly. "I was just chasing ghosts," she replied blithely before remembering that chances were, the other cub couldn't see them like most people. Gratefully she seized on the subject of names.

"Sure! My mom calls me Nusu more 'cause she says I should've been named Nuisance but I like Aina more," she told him with a grin before looking over to the bird.

Aina'nusu cocked her head to one side as she regarded the avian. "Shouldn't a guardian be bigger than the one they're guarding?" she asked.

Makosa blinked in surprise at her words, his head tilting to the side. Chasing...ghosts? Really? He shared a confused look with Adelai'e, but returned his gaze to the girl before him. "What kind of ghosts?" He asked, rather curious.

He gave a small grin at her words. "Aina it is then," he said with a small laugh.

Adelai'e ruffled his feathers, looking disgruntled. "I don't need to be bigger than this rascal to guard him!" He announced, using his wing to whap his young charge on the head. Makosa started, but laughed, unconcerned at the hit, knowing it was affectionate.

"If you're off chasing ghosts on your own, you sound like you need a guardian," Adelai'e pointed out, shifting to rest more comfortably on Makosa's head.

"They're...ghosts," the young cheeton had no good way to describe them. Her mother might've said "wisps" or "spirits" or "visions", but those were boring words that didn't even occur to Aina'nusu.

She turned to the bird. "But if you're not bigger than him, how can you stop him from doing anything? So a guardian would do me no good." A mischevious glint touched her eyes at the thought. No bird would ever stop her fun!

The cub cocked her head at Makosa. "Wanna chase the ghosts with me?"

Makosa grinned at her comment to Adelai'e and felt rather than saw Adelai'e ruffle his feather in offense. “I can squawk and carry on until he listens to me,” Adelai'e announced, whacking his charge on the back of the head again for the faint snicker he gave. Makosa stopped laughing, but grinned at Aina.

His eyes lit up at the idea of chasing ghosts. “You'd let me come too?” He asked, excited. He had never been around other cubs much, his visions keeping him pretty close to his mother, but the idea of chasing ghosts, of seeing a ghost – well it was quite tempting.

Sure!” He agreed, before Adelai'e could protest.

The cheeton grinned. "That's silly. What if you went hoarse with all the squawking and carrying on? Then he couldn't possibly listen to you!" It seemed like it wouldn't be useful at all for the bird to be following him around talking. After all, a cub was so much bigger than a little bird. Even if the bird was older.

"A'course I would!" she replied gleefully. "It's simple. We just follow them around. They don't do much most of the time, and they never see us."

One day, when she was older, Aina'nusu would probably come to realize that the ghosts never reacted because their actions had happened in the past and the present could never influence what had already happened. But right now she was just a cub and incapable of formulating such complex thoughts.

Adelai'e heaved a weary sigh at the Cheeton. "I've been squawking at this one since the moment he was born, it seemed like. I haven't gone hoarse yet, so I'll take my chances!" The cub was rather clever, it seemed, evenif she did think she was chasing ghosts. He peered at Makosa, and then at the strange girl. Perhaps she was like Makosa? He saw things that no cubs should be able to see, perhaps seeing ghosts was actually real too...ah, nonsense! He protested his own thoughts, and shook his head to dispell them.

He'd been in his own thoughts so much he'd missed the question and the agreement, but he flustered a bit. "Now...wait a minute!" He began to protest, and felt Makosa slump beneath him, obviously expecting to be told he couldn't go.

Adelai'e hesitated...and sighed. "We can't be out too long," he muttered, "your mother will worry, but I suppose you may chase ghosts for a while."

Makosa beamed in excitement and joy, bouncing on his paws, almost dislodging the bird. "Thank you, Adelai'e!" He beamed brightly and glanced at the cheeton. "Let's go!" He had to get the best out of this before Adelai'e dragged him home.

"Horray!" Aina'nusu cried out as Adelai'e gave Makosa permission to stay and play for a while longer. She bounded around, circling the black cub once before heading out after a ghost.

"Look, this one is hunting!" she called out, following a big red lion who was cautiously making his way eastward. "Let's follow him!" She did love following hunters like this one. It was educational, because she got to watch the best ghost hunters around and she saw what they did right and could try to figure out how to do that for herself.

Makosa smiled brightly at the bubbly female and bounced after her, huffing a little as he was unused to much physical exercise due to his sickly youth. He looked confused as she motioned to what appeared to be nothing, but followed along eagerly. "Okay," he agreed brightly, ready to follow the fun but strange female on the ghost hunt.

Adelai'e flew above them, keeping a sharp watch on the pair. Were they just being cubs? He wondered, chasing after nothing, or was there something else at play here. He had seen Makosa in the throws of violent visions, so he knew what form the 'sight' could sometimes take. Was this female having a walking vision, or simply acting childish?

He didn't know, but the best he could do was watch over the pair, and make sure no hurt fell upon them, as was the life of a guardian.

It was easily the best day of Aina'nusu's life to date. She had a new playmate who didn't tease and make fun of the ghosts and he had a funny bird that kept trying to protect them. (Which really didn't make that much sense. She knew Adelai'e was older than both of them, but he was still smaller and so how could he really do anything other than fly around and tell them they shouldn't do things? It didn't make sense but she wasn't going to point that out to Makosa when he was being so very friendly.)

And there were really interesting ghosts here. She hadn't been to this particular place before, having just wandered around looking for somewhere new. It was fun and educational and best of all it wasn't boring!

The cheeton cub glanced over her shoulder to see the leopon still following her. Grinning, she crouched down, stalking the ghost lion as he stalked his ghost prey. Best. Day. Ever.
