AMITYVILLE ACADEMY ENROLLMENT FORMName: Derleth Nicknames: (none yet!) Gender: Male Age: He looks to be around 16 years old...
Faction/Race: Monster/Fear Manifestation
Derleth is a physical manifestation of the human fear of the unknown. Specifically, he was created from the incident of the Bloop - a strange sound that rumbled across the ocean depths, its source and meaning completely unknown to modern human science.
What caused the Bloop doesn't matter, at least not to Halloween Town. Instead, the important thing is the fear that it inspired, the sinking dread of the vast and unknowable abyss. Derleth is the embodiment of that fear, spun into being by the mysterious sound.
Personality: On the surface, Derleth appears to be your average teenage male, one you'd find in just about any school. You know the type, the quiet guy who sits in the back of the class and stares out the window, daydreaming and writing bad emo poetry. Or Derleth would anyway, if he didn't always sit so perfectly still, staring off into space unfocused... but also unblinking. He's the epitome of 'still waters run deep'.
Derleth is not prone to drama or bouts of teenage angst like most of his peers. He's mild-mannered, quiet, and generally unflappable, calmly responding to everything in his own taciturn way. He's not easily startled or frightened, which can get him into trouble - if he's placed into a truly dangerous situation, he won't panic, but he may not perceive the danger as a personal threat as quickly as someone else might.
Like a jellyfish, Derleth just kind of floats along where the current takes him. As of his appearance in Halloween Town, Derleth is in 'observation mode' - content to examine the world around him, quietly watching, listening, and learning. He has a natural curiosity, though he tends to indulge it through passive means rather than by actively asking questions - as if he hasn't yet realized how much he can interact with and affect the world around him.
As Derleth learns, he will begin to change, slowly coming out of his shell. For right now, his personality is very self-sufficient and self-contained - if he feels anything strongly, he certainly isn't telling anyone else about it! In time, the more Derleth meets people and the more things he sees and does, he will open up more and more.
Why are they enrolled in Amityville Academy? A truancy officer found Derleth wandering around the edges of Halloween Town, landing Derleth in the Academy. It was as good a direction as any, and the lectures are fascinating, so Derleth is content to remain at the Academy for now.
FEAR: Natural Ability: Derleth has a natural resistance to FEAR abilities that require the attacker to make direct eye contact with him. He's not invulnerable, but opponents attempting to use that type of attack on Derleth will have to expend more energy to get the attack to land.
Fear Ability - The Void Gazes Back: Direct eye contact with Derleth paralyzes his target with the fear he embodies. The duration of the attack's stun varies based on a dice roll - anywhere from a couple seconds, to minutes, to even rendering his target unconscious (if a crit is rolled).
Mentally, the target will experience a different effect depending on the duration of the attack. A low roll would result in a creeping sense of intense dread for a few seconds. A high roll could provoke a sudden, pants-wetting crash of terror that gives the victim the terrible sense of being entirely alone in an uncaring and inimical universe.
Physical Description: Derleth looks surprisingly mundane, for Halloween Town at least! He looks so 'normal' that he may seem a bit odd amongst all the other, more exotic, students at Amityville Academy.
As he was born from human fear of the unknown, he resembles an ordinary human in almost all respects. Only two of Derleth's features reflect his origins of a deep-water phenomenon: his eyes, which are like looking into the deep void; and the perpetual dampness of his hair, body, and clothing, as if he has just come back from swimming. Derleth walks around barefoot, leaving wet footprints in his wake.
Eye Colour: Derleth's eyes are just slightly over-large in proportion to his face - just enough to be unsettlingly 'wrong'. They are completely dark with no iris or pupils - not any specific color, but looking at them is like staring into the dark ocean depths.
Hair Colour/Style: Artist's choice in color and style (something that would follow a school's dress code but not so scrupulously clean-cut that he looks like he just escaped from Sunday mass). His hair should always look slightly damp, regardless of style.
Skin Colour: Average Caucasian skin tone.
Clothing Style/Colours: Comfortable, T-shirt, hoodie, and jeans type clothing (as with his hair, Derleth should look relatively neat but not painstakingly so). Otherwise artist's choice; no specific color or style.
Extra: Derleth always goes barefoot, and leaves damp footprints (though not huge dripping puddles) behind him. His clothes and hair should always appear slightly damp - not dripping, but as if Derleth just went swimming or just got out of the shower.
References: Basic concept; hair style/color and clothing style/color do not have to follow this reference. It's just a general idea.

*A little unicorn manages to reach the shore and see these bubbles* owo
He's an unsettling guy by your description and thus finds himself alone most of the time. So what would happen if Derleth found himself the object of someone's attentions that somehow was just fine with his indifference? Or maybe someone who's particularly outspoken/loud? Is he affected more by socialites than wallflowers, for instance?
I like that he's almost a blank slate. Makes for more rp opportunities to take in what others give to him. 83 Also parallels the whole "first year student experience" deal with the character having to learn the basics first.
If this crit helped, I'd love it if you took a look at Winona in my sig~

If this crit helped, I'd love it if you took a look at Winona in my sig~ (Go little unicorn, go!) Derleth is very much a 'go with the flow' type guy so he probably would be affected by socialites more just because they tend to be more outgoing and 'pushy' than a more introverted wallflower. Though if a wallflower type really clung on to him all the time then perhaps they would have the most influence. It just depends. ((Yeah, I'm kind of a n00b to RPs so I wanted a blank slate sort of character where I could learn as I went along. I'm also just perversely amused by the idea of Derleth's weirdness mostly coming from how he looks like an average human in the middle of a school full of supernatural monsters. Everything about him is just slightly off and out of place from what one would normally expect.))
