User ImageIt was nearly sunset when Laughing Shadows had set out for the swamp. She had decided that with the fireflies out en masse as they were it would be a good night for watching the shadows dance across the surface of the swamp water. Though she would never tell anyone why, she always suspected the shadows held secrets for things that were and would someday be. the naming dream she had had where she had seen the shadows dance and laugh brought on this misconception and so she had set out to study the shadows that very night.

Never had she discovered anything from them and likely she never would, but she still had to try. She was suspicious of the shadows, even when they lay still at night.

Grace had been travelling for some time. Night was falling as the sun decided it was time for bed, pulling it's blanket of light and warmth along with it, leaving the moon the duty of watching over the swamp. A sigh escaped the mouth of the spotted doe. Finding a soft patch of moss to lie down on, she curled up, watching her shadow play across the water as she moved around. She didn't hear or see any other kimeti in the area, but she felt like she was being watched. Knowing that eerie feeling all to well, she chose to ignore it unless absolutely necessary.

Laughing Shadows' ears perked as she thought she heard a sigh coming from somewhere in the shadows. Her heart raced at the sound and she peered closely around her to see if it might have come from someone within eyesight only to realize it had not. Curiously, but very cautiously, she crept toward where she had thought she heard the sound. Laughing Shadows was afraid of what the shadows could contain and her hooves touched the ground softly as she made her chase into the dark of the night and the trees by the swamp.

It was with much surprise when the kimeti happened to notice the presence of another kimeti in the area. Had that doe been there before, she wondered, and if so how had she not noticed her earlier? Thinking it might be some sort of trick of the night, she approached the doe that had curled up near the water's edge before stuttering out a greeting, not really sure if she wanted to hear an answer.

"H-h-hel..lo?"

Hearing a rather hesitant greeting, Grace calmly turned he head to the gray and black doe before her. Standing, she smiled and said, "Hellooo" Her voice, thought to sound like a ghost's, just added to the eerie feeling of the night. Smiling at the other kimeti, she waited for her to calm down and realize she was in no danger.

Thoroughly tempted to breathe a sigh of relief when a response is heard from the shadows, Laughing Shadows suddenly grows curious and unsure. The voice sounded real enough, but it also seemed ghostly - was she now hearing voices? Not quite sure if she should investigate further, the doe steeled herself and quietly moved so that she could better see where the voice had come from. For several seconds she stood watching with bated breath, gauging the way the doe stood before she accepted that she was entirely real and not just a shadow.

Having assured herself of the reality, she moved forward almost sheepishly and dipped her head in greeting, "I thought you were a talking shadow..."

Not wanting to sound crazy, she added in a hurry, "I didn't realize any other kimeti came out this late. So hearing someone else startled me." Laughing Shadows felt quite the fool, but she did her best to not let it show as she glanced over the other doe. Something about her seemed serene, almost older, than Laughing Shadows was. And she looked beautiful, too. The way the blue played off of the green made her remotely aware of the fact she was black and grey. Though Laughing Shadows did not doubt that she, too, was a beautiful doe, the newcomer seemed to speak it better than she did.

Suddenly aware she had not yet introduced herself, the young doe added in almost a mutter, "I'm Laughing Shadows, by the way. What's your name?"

Grace smiled. "Do not despair, I am not here to harm you." she cooed. Taking anothe rstep closer, as to keep her entire body out of the unreal shadows that she knew she blended into all to well. "I am Water's Grace, but Grace works well if you feel the need to call me something shorter. What brings you out on this dark night?"

The softness with which the other doe spoke soothed Laughing Shadows frayed nerves and this showed in her visible relaxation as the other stepped forward and further out of the shadows. So she hadn't just been imagining things, after all! Grateful for this fact, she smiled as she sat down on the cool ground and tilted her head at the other's name. It was a beautiful name to match a beautiful doe and again Laughing Shadows grew aware of the fact that her own name was much to blame for her wariness around shadows in the night. And was, in fact, largely why she spent many hours out late at night, listening carefully. The shadows seemed to haunt her, even now in her dreams, though she was older and knew they could do her no harm.

Water Grace's own acknowledgment that she was not there to harm the young doe coupled with the way she seemed to notice and accept the fact the doe was leery of the shadows made Laughing Shadows like her. In fact, if anyone were to ask her, she would likely say she trusted this doe. Feeling more than a little sheepish at how she had treated the other, she bobbed her head with her face turned slightly to the side in obvious embarrassment. "I like to spend time out here during the darkness of night." Although the shadows bothered her, she was convinced knowledge was to be had at night. "I think you can learn things better in the stillness around us at night."

It was a stretch, to be sure, but she hoped it sounded better than the fact she came out to listen to the shadows. That just made her sound crazy. Returning her attention fully to Water's Grace she added quietly, "How about you?"

Grace smiled. This doe was wary of the shadows and she was smart. The shadows had a lot to tell. So did the whispers in the wind. Looking around, Grace smiled. Returning her gaze to Shadows, she responded, "I roam the swamp at night to sing and see if there would be one to join me in filling the still air with music that soothes the soul and makes young kimeti drift off to sleep soundly and safely." As she spoke, she glanced around to see if any such creatures were about. There were none.

Laughing Shadows' glowing eyes quickly flicked in the directions that Grace had glanced, not quite sure if there was something there or if she was just looking for the sake of looking. Her question not answered, she looked back at the other doe as she spoke, her shoulders rising and slumping in a silent shrug. Clearly if there was anything there, it wasn't anything that should bother her. If it didn't get a rise out of the more knowledgeable doe, then it shouldn't get one out of her. At least not a visible one that would make her appear nuts in front of someone else. Laughing Shadows enjoyed making new friends and she greatly hoped that Water's Grace might become one of them. Though that was something she wished of all Kimeti she ran into.

When Water's Grace mentioned singing, the young Kimeti's ears perked up. Not only did this doe enjoy spending time out at night, but she also sang! This made her excited and happy to speak to the other female, which showed in the way her tail flopped happily onto the ground and she leaned forward intently the more Grace spoke. Though she was also appropriately saddened when her hopefully soon to be friend glanced around at the end again. Was she looking for singing partners or for an audience? Or was she listening to the shadows?

Unable to fully contain her curiosity, Laughing Shadows head tilted slightly to one side as she asked, "Who do you usually sing with?"

Grace smiled and looked around once more before answering. "My partners differ each night. Only those who feel like singing really have to join me..." Her voice trailed off at the sound of a few other voices in between the trees. They probably wouldn't come out in the open, but she knew they were there at least. "See? They are out there. You cannot see them, but we sing for most of the night until all is still, and then we are too." Letting out a few notes of acknowledgment to the kimeti in the forests, Grace asked, "Do you sing?"

((my brain is just fried from school. there's nothing I can really do about that and my replies haven't gone to crap yet, so I think I'll be okay.))

Once more unable to resist, Laughing Shadows' eyes followed Grace's as they looked around the two does. The way she kept glancing around made Laughing Shadows feel overly alert, almost as if there was more then just them around. Of course, the young doe mentally amended that thought. There would always be things around in the swamp, even if you couldn't see them. The only question that really remained was - were they friendly or not? With no answer clearly forthcoming the doe tilted her head to one side as Grace spoke.

As she spoke the doe grew more and more mysterious to the youthful one and she found herself once more glancing around, eyes squinted as she tried to see who Grace was speaking of. Finding no one she could see with her eyes, her attention came back to the doe as she sung a few notes. Surprised at the voice that came forth, Laughing Shadows sat neatly on the ground, her expression one of both intrigue and confusion as she raised an ear to carefully listen if anyone would respond to the doe.

When asked if she sang as well, the doe shook her head. Singing was something she had not done yet and likely wouldn't, for fear of something singing back to her from the trees. "No...I don't sing. But you do it so beautifully!"

Grace smiled. "Have you ever tried it?" The sounds of the other kimeti voices sounded like they were moving, getting fainter as they moved across the swamp. It sounded rather beautiful, and Grace felt the pull to sleep herself, but knew that it was not the right time. Looking down at the young doe in front of her, she knew she had a young spirit, inexperienced and pure to the world. Grace herself felt like her soul was old and tired, possibly why she was so passive and calm about the things she did and how she acted.

At Grace's question, the doe sullenly shook her head and pointedly glanced to the ground in mild embarrassment as she responded. That was one thing she hadn't done, for she had been busy flirting and playing with the other bucks and does. She hadn't really spent much time off on her own, or doing things like singing or anything like that. To be entirely honest with herself, the doe wasn't entirely sure she was artistic, even if she did enjoy watching or listening to others who were so inclined.

Then there was the fact that she enjoyed the nighttime and singing to the shadows was something that unnerved her. Who knew who might join in? And if they were friendly? But the young doe merely offered a regretful, "Well...No. I haven't..."

Lifting her head back up so that her glowing eyes stared into Grace's eyes, she tilted her head ever so slightly before adding, "Why do you sing?" It was a simple enough question, the doe thought and made sense. If one sang, they ought to have a reason for it, right?

Grace thought for a moment. "I sing because it makes me feel more one with nature. It makes things more calm, and it gives me a sense of belonging when the others join me." She knew it sounded ridiculous, but the way she felt felt really right, so she stood by her answer.

The young doe stood and paced just a little as she mulled over what she had just been told. Certainly at first glance the reasoning sounded bizarre, but the more she thought about it as she listened to the sounds of the swamp, the more it actually made sense. The various sounds around them suddenly stood out more vibrantly to her as she paid attention to them for the first time, trying to fully grasp what Grace had said. To better hear them she stopped in her pacing and lifted her head, straining her ears out as far as they would go to listen well to what she could.

The noises were frightening, at first, but she knew that Water's Grace would not let anything happen to her. Or at least, she hoped that she wouldn't. Laughing Shadows then looked past that fear and to the sounds and the melody they created. That strain discovered, she tilted her head and looked back to the other doe, her voice uncertain as she spoke, "So...you're...the harmony to the Swamp's melody?"
