A lone figure stood within the pumpkin patch, a long shadow distorted over the forms of the numerous pumpkins it stood in front of. Despite the slight breeze, the child never once moved as he stared out at the horizon in deep thought. There was so much to mull over, and for once he was glad to be out in the cold since he just happened to be surrounded by a plant he was a demon of strangely enough.

All around the pumpkin demon were giant orange squash, some of which being looked over by lone parents and kids that seemed to avoid him. Who could blame them? He had been standing there for so long and so still it was as if he had become a statue. Azrael sighed and glanced vaguely at the entrance to the pumpkin patch, wondering if a certain girl by the name of Aesica had shown up yet. Still nothing, unfortunately. At least he had learned a thing or two about patience, otherwise he would've gotten bored ages ago.

The small child made her way into the pumpkin patch, money in hand. She walked with a determined air, going over her goals. She'd go in, get a pumpkin, and go home. Simple as that. Then maybe her siblings would stop hounding her about "Halloween Spirit". She swore, if she heard that phrase one more time.... She sighed, running a small pale hand through her raven curls as she started looking at the pumpkins, paying the other families and children no heed. That is, until a familiar boy caught her eye.

"Hello, Azrael." she greeted, smiling up at the older boy as she curtsied to her ally. "Glad to see I'm not the only one who has grown. How have you been?" The tiny child leaned against one of the larger pumpkins, tilting her head. She was the picture of innocence, which, as the pumpkin demon should know, was naught more than an act.

The perfect Halloween-like smirk crawled onto the boy's face at the sight of his oh-so-familiar friend. It was perfect amounts of creepy and evil without seeming too much of either or totally goofy looking. "Aesica, well met. I've been alright; could be better, could be worse. Been exploring more and more and decided to meet my kin once again," Azrael replied, gesturing widely at the pumpkins. Of course, a part of his story seemed off by the sight of a backpack nearby stuffed with essentials to living either outside or at another person's house.

"And you? You've grown as well I see and no doubt have been up to no good as well," he added, chuckling softly. Ah, he had missed the girl greatly, that was for sure.

Aesica smiled that oh-so-sweet smile she was known for, listening. "Yes, I've grown. Sadly, it's not as tall as I would have preferred, but it will do. At least I can walk now. " Still, not being able to reach the counter was quite an issue, but she wouldn't bore him with that. "Things have been alright with me. I'm here picking up a pumpkin for our house. And I still have most of the adults wrapped around my finger, so I rarely get caught."

The girl noticed the bag, a look of curiosity working it's way across her face. "What's that for?" she asked, looking away from the bag and up to the boy it belonged to.

Azrael grinned. "Ah, but height is just a number. See, you can probably still hide in places I can't. Like a ninja, yanno?" he replied, laughing a little at her explanation of how nobody suspected Aesica of actually being a conniving and scheming little girl that wished only harm of them. Or at least, that's what he figured and why he had grown so fond of her. Well, enough to consider her a real friend.

Orange eyes trailed to where the bag was resting, uneasiness stealing into his entire being. "Well... I just had to get out of the house for a night or two," he muttered, the previous cheerfulness instantly fading away. It had taken a good deal of concentration to keep his brother and family out of his mind but now... "It's a long story," he added, gazing at the others that were looking over the pumpkins. "A really long story..."

Aesica's expression gained a little bit of actual, non-faked happiness to it, letting out a little giggle. "True. I can fit into the tiny little places people often look over. But not being able to reach things is still tedious." she said, a genuine smile spreading across her delicate, fragile-looking features. How deceptive looks could be. The smile slowly faded from her face as she heard the answer to her question.

The previously happy face now wore an expression of slight concern. "Where are you staying?" she asked, looking up at him. While she didn't want to admit she was worried or that she cared...she couldn't help it. He'd earned the title of ally, and by doing so, he earned her rarely-given concern. She noticed his expression, which cause her to pause. She hesitated before giving the taller boy a hug. "I'm sure it'll be okay." she said solemnly, trying to offer encouragement. Which felt really, really odd considering how little she used such gestures.

A hug, a rare hug he had forgotten the feeling of. The gesture surprised the boy into dumbfounded silence for a long moment. "St-staying? N-n-nowhere," he stuttered, managing to pull himself together for a moment to hug the girl back. Now he knew he had chosen well in a best friend, despite how awkward Aesica was at giving said hug. A hug was a hug, right?

"Thanks Aesica. I hope things will be alright, but I dunno. Ah, well, it's a nice day and there's no point in wasting it by standing around and moping right?" he asked, a true grin plastering itself on his face. Just because life was a little rough, that didn't mean he'd waste a day with his friend complaining about it.

Aesica frowned slightly. He wasn't staying anywhere? Well, she couldn't very well have that, could she? Of course not! "You'll stay at my house, then." the small girl said, her tone leaving no room for argument. She pulled out of the awkward hug, hoping she'd done it right. He'd stuttered; that wasn't supposed to happen, was it? Curse her lack of social skills; she'd have to remedy that later.

The frown edged off her face as she replaced it with her usual little smirk. "Right." she agreed with a little nod. "Want to help me pick out a pumpkin? I'm sure you know more about which would best than I do."

Azrael blinked, a smirk replacing his grin. "I was hoping you'd say that and sure. I mean come on, who would know more about pumpkins than a pumpkin demon?" he replied, crossing his arms across his chest. Seriously though, who would know more about the orange squash than someone born of it? Hell, he even had one stuck to the end of his TAIL. Thankfully it didn't rot or he would have been in trouble ages ago.

"So what were you looking for? A huge pumpkin or a smaller one? One that's shaped funny or perhaps the perfect shade of orange?" he asked, scanning the rows and rows of pumpkins as he picked his bag up to carry around. Like hell he'd let someone take it when he wasn't looking.

"A pumpkin itself?" the little half-fae mused, chuckling. Was someone actually making a joke? She paused a second. She hadn't put much thought into what kind of pumpkin she was going to get. To be honest, she'd thought all pumpkins were pretty much the same. And she still really didn't see much of a difference. But, she tactfully kept this opinion to herself.

"One that's good for jack-o-lanterns." she said after her moment of thought, nodding slowly. "Something sturdy, too. Some of my siblings are...less than graceful." She chuckled slightly at some inner image before looking back up at her friend. "Think we could find one like that?"

Azrael laughed. "I figured. There's not actually a whole lot of a difference. I can just see them a little easier I suppose. A sturdy pumpkin? Hm... Yeah, but lets hope no one else has already taken them and left just the mushy ones," he replied, chuckling softly still as he headed off to a distant section of the pumpkin patch. Many didn't realize it, but the corner often had excellent pumpkins for jack o lanterns as he had realized so long ago.

That being said, he generally bought out the entire section and every good pumpkin he could find with his allowance and whatever his mother bought for him. It tended to be a good thing they were never all that expensive compared to some of the things he could ask her to get for him in mass quantities. "Hm... This one looks good," he continued, nudging a medium-sized pumpkin. Overall it looked decent and, despite the abuse its fellow pumpkins nearby had received, seemed fairly intact.

Aesica nodded, half-jogging to keep up with her taller, leggier friend. Stupid short legs, not being able to step far enough. She kept her pace, doing her best not to get left behind. The uneven ground of the pumpkin patch wasn't helping, however; she stumbled several times along the way and nearly lost her balance. She put her trust in her friend, since she definietly had no clue when it came to pumpkin-picking.

Aesica, with her general lack of knowledge and interest in picking out orange gourds, had no idea why she'd been chosen for the job. After all, she wasn't the one who was going to carve it. She wasn't the one who was excited abou it. If they thought that this would spark her interest, they were sorely mistaken. Midnight blue eyes looked at gourd, assessing it a moment. Not that she could tell if it was good or not; she'd just have to take Azrael's word for it. "It looks perfect. Thank you, Azrael." she said, offering a small, genuine smile and nodding her head once. Now came the hard part; was she big enough to carry it? She sure hoped so.

Azrael grinned back, glad he could help. "No problem. Really, it's the least I could do since you're letting me stay at your house. You sure it won't be a problem?" he asked randomly, already feeling the cold bite of October weather. Damn, why couldn't Cody go crazy during the summer or something? Would've been tons warmer to sleep outside in.

"You gonna need help picking that pumpkin up?" Azrael added with a snicker, flashing the girl a smile. He was obviously joking, trying to keep the mood a little lighter with some humor. He just hoped Aesica noticed and didn't take it the wrong way or nothing. She was an ally, yes, but that didn't mean she couldn't do something out of anger and hurt him somehow.
