Wincing as the sun's glare pained her pale eyes, she ducked her head. It was a hot, still day and she had been on the move for a few hours now. But she could scent what had drawn her here... the river, wide and cool and so very sweet...
Padding forwards with her sensitive eyes closed, she could almost feel the welcome chill of the water in her coat already and had to keep from hurrying her step. One breath, then another.. the scent of the water grew till it was all-consuming. Then, suddenly, her paws hit the fluid she so longed for and it was gloriously cold, so cold that it sent a jolt up her spine. Without pausing she waded into the chill river to her belly then flopped down, her head barely clearing the low rippling waves.
Heaving a great sigh of relief she relaxed, digging slender toes into the sandy bottom.
Yes... this was what she needed...

Tulia had finally escaped the ever-watchful eyes of her sister. Sebae meant well, and Tulia knew this, but at times even best intentions were rather stifling at best. Tulia was thankful that her sister had been given more responsibilities by their pride leader, Esti; it meant that more time was spent helping create the guidelines the pride would live by. Since the move into what was now the prides new territory, Tulia had been spending time finding her way around. It was hard for a near-blind girl to do, but that was part of the fun. Yesterday she'd followed the base of the mountain for quite a ways before turning around and finding her way back. Today Tulia had decided she'd follow one of the many snow-melt streams to see where it went. Tulia loved her little adventures dearly, and as she walked she hummed to herself, splashing the water as she walked. In the distance a louder noise compared to the gentle tinkle of the stream; the subtle roar of a river. Excited, Tulia picked up her pace; to look at her, one wouldn't even know that she was blind.

It was some time before she heard something off to one side, above the sounds of the river about her. Opening her eyes and relieved the sound was away from the glare of the sun, she sat up and squinted against the river spray. Her coat was slicked down with water, turning her already dark coat almost black and making the wing markings stand out brightly.
Finally making out the shape of another lioness, she tilted her head. It had been a long time since she had met anyone and curiosity welled up within her. Standing she splashed through the river to the other side, though didn't get out, reluctant to leave the cooling waters.

Tulia heard the splashing that seemed utterly out of sync with the rhythmic sound of the river, so she knew she wasn't completely alone. If it was prey, she didn't care. If it was foe, she'd be a bit of a bind, but if it was friend, well... that was just fantastic. Tulia loved making new friends.
"Hello!" Her voice was bright and clear, her face turned in the direction of the splashing. Tulia's nose twitched as she caught scent of another lion although it was quite diluted and not very strong. Was the lion in the water? Tulia mused to herself, the thought bringing a smile to her face as she waited for an answer.

Oh ah! She had been spoken to! Panic seized her for a moment before she managed to get a grip on it, pale pink gaze seeking the other lioness. Oh right, she should reply... Clearing her throat she tried to call out but it took a couple of attempts before she found the right volume for her disused voice.
"Hello"
Blinking a little nervously she finally waded to the bank, moving till the edge of the water only lapped around her paws, reluctant to fully leave the comforting coolness. Uh... should she say something else...? Like what? Oh, her name may be good...
"I'm Mwanamke Wa'mwezi.."
Now that sounded like a big mouthful.... maybe...
"But um... call me Mwana..?"
She couldn't help the faint sound of uncertainty that lilted her voice, were nicknames usually offered too or was she supposed to keep that for later? She had no idea...

Tulia bit back a chuckle at the nervous uncertainty in Mwana's voice. It would be rather rude to laugh directly in someone's face that you've just met. Besides, Tulia quite liked Mwana's voice. For a moment Tulia felt a bit wistful as she often did when she met a stranger; her lack of sight was the cause. Tulia would love to be able to look a new friend in the eye, to see real emotion on someone's face. Ah, well. She was lucky in other ways.
"Mwana! That's a lovely name. I'm Tulia. My pride lives down this stream a bit," she continued, gesturing at the crystalline water she stood in. "I don't have a nickname. You're lucky! Sometimes my sister calls me Tutu but... I don't like it much. I think she does it just to get on my nerves!" She paused, grinning from ear to ear. It was obvious her sight was gone; she never made eye contact with Mwana, and her eyes had that slightly unfocused look. "She's older than I am, so she tends to get a little bossy. I have to remind her that she's not my mother sometimes!"
Out of breath now, Tulia chuckled. "Sorry. I like to talk."

So much chatter! The sudden torrent of words startled the young female, pale eyes blinking as she struggled to keep up with so much info all at once. Glancing down at the stream she looked back at the lioness, wondering what pride she meant... Mwana hadn't know there even was a pride close by, that could have been bad if they didn't like rogues...
Realising the other lioness had fallen quiet she blinked then coughed, struggling to pull her voice from her throat faster than she was accustomed too. "Ah oh.. no... its fine, really!"
Slowly she padded up the river to be a little closer in order not to have to raise her voice so much, she just hoped the other didn't mind. "Tulia is a pretty name though.. and nice and short. Mines so long its too long..." Did that make sense? She hoped so... Ahh.. what else had she said.. something about a pride.. oh that was right! ".. Uh.. what pride is it? if I may ask... I don't know this area very well.. or well.. any area really... "
There.. that was honest and more useful than just.. 'oh'. This talking thing was hard work.. but, what had that been about a tutu.. oh! Her name.. "I wouldn't like Tutu much either.. so you are older than your sister?" She wasn't really sure what that had to do anything.. but it seemed polite to ask.. it was, wasn't it?
Worried now that she had offended the nice lioness she bit her tongue, pale eyes a little nervous as she watched the one called Tulia.

"Ohh, no, your name is lovely! What's it mean? Mine doesn't mean anything special, I'm afraid. Neither does my sisters. They're just names." She grinned towards Mwana's voice, giving pause before starting in again.
"Our pride is called the Ongozana'Ke! It's a lovely pride, we've got a few males that hang around but the pride is mostly composed of females. We're like a big happy family full of sisters! We make our home at the base of the mountain," Tulia gestured with a nod of her head.
"I'm younger than my sister, but our mother died when we were young so she thinks she has to take care of me." The affection she had for her sister was obvious in her voice. "We're actually twins, well, except for our colors. I think our eyes are different colors, too."
Tulia took a breath before her yammering continued, "I'm blind," she said matter-of-factly. "Not completely. I can see shadows, but not much. It gets worse as the days go by. Soon enough I'll be completely blind!" Her voice was chipper and she had no self-pity, that was obvious. "So Sebae, that's my sister, thinks she has to watch me wherever I go. Lemme tell ya," she leaned forward, "It gets kind of annoying."

A warm colour heated her dark cheeks at the praise, she had no idea what to say in return so she stammered a shy 'thank you'.
"Umm.. it means.. 'Lady of the moon'.. so I was told.. I.. oh.." The friendly lioness had said she was blind? That had to make things pretty difficult didn't it? though she seemed happy and cheerful enough. In fact, Tulia kind of made her feel like she was being silly for being so nervous.. after all, she still had the full use of her eyes..
Blushing yet deeper she dropped her head a little. "My coat looks like the night sky and I have a moon-like marking... I think its from that." Her stammers and hesitations had smoothed out a little, distracted from her own uncertainties by the lovely lioness's own predicament. Though, what did you say to something like that? 'Sorry' didn't seem appropriate some how.. but.. there had to be something right? Yet nothing came to her, nothing that didn't sound petty or condescending.
"Your sister sounds nice though.. even if she is over-bearing. I bet she just worries for you. Though you are out here so you have to be pretty brave.. I don't think i would be if I was like you." She admitted softly, her own gaze lowering.
"Your pride sounds nice.. I don't have any family any more. Is your family big then?" Genuine curiosity crept into her shy tones as she looked back at the other.

"Lady of the moon," Tulia murmured to herself. How pretty it was! "Oh, you sound lovely! My sister looks identical to me, but instead of silver, she's brownish gold. I remember that much. I've forgotten the color of her eyes, though. I should ask her. That sort of thing is important to me," Tulia explained. "It always has been, but I'm not sure why. Eyes are the windows to the soul, or so I've heard," she finished sheepishly.
"Oh, Sebae is a wonderful sister. She's done so much for me, and I just keep barreling right in to trouble. Sebae's had to fish me out of a few dodgy situations. I know why she's so bossy, she's terrified of losing me," Tulia grumbled, "I always have to tell her that I'm blind, not stupid, but.. I love her." Tulia chuckled.
"Our pride is fantastic. Sebae is my only blood relative as far as I know, but oh our pride is just a band of sisters. We're always there for one another, and it works out nicely. Oh, I don't know," Tulia laughed, "I can't wait to start a family of my own."

Smiling shyly she studied Tulia, she thought the lioness was already beautiful. No doubt her sister was as well. "Windows to the soul...?" Glancing down at the river she still stood in, she squinted, trying to make her reflection keep still long enough to see her own eye colour. "I'm not sure what mine are... no one has ever told me.." She half murmured in thought, before pulling her self back and to the conversation. He voice was coming a little easier now, and her mind had finally caught up to the speed with which Tulia spoke.
"You don't sound stupid to me.. you sound very brave. Im pretty sure I couldn't be." Smiling shyly she shifted a little. She would love a family one day, though it seemed almost impossible.. considering how scared she was other other lions and especially males.. "I'm sure you will have a huge family, you are so friendly and beautiful."

"I wish I could tell you what color your eyes are, Mwana! But I bet it wouldn't make a lick of difference. I can tell just by talking to you that you are a good-hearted lioness. I'm a pretty good judge of character," Tulia boasted. "Or so I like to think. I believe in giving everyone a chance, you know? Sebae is so wary of everyone. Why, I bet if she happened upon the two of us having a friendly conversation she'd be furious at me for talking to a stranger!" Tulia couldn't stop the laughter that bubbled forth.
"There is a very, very thin line between bravery and stupidity, Mwana. I've walked the line many times, and as I've mentioned it's gotten me into some sticky situations! But you can't learn if you don't make mistakes, you know?" Tulia shrugged, "It's why mistakes don't bother me. I make them willingly."

Blushing shyly she smiled. "Thank you... you are kind to someone like me." Giggling softly, the bubbly lioness's good nature infectious, Mwana relaxed a little, the nervous tightness in her shoulders easing. "You are very friendly, Tulia, and really nice.." That kind of didn't sound quite like she wanted.. how could she tell the other lioness exactly how much her warmth helped relax Mwana?
Tilting her head she studied Tulia curiously, now fully forgetting her nerves. "I bet you would make a great leader.. Tulia.. you are very knowledgeable and down to earth... And brave. Not just in action, but you... you don't seem to let life take over.. " Blushing again she dropped her head, staring at her paws. Maybe she had over stepped the mark? She really didn't want to upset the friendly female.

"Someone like you?" Tulia tilted her head to the side. "How can I help but be nice to such a gentle lioness?" She laughed and shook her head, grinning in Mwana's direction. "I'm just lucky you weren't some huge angry male, hmm? That would've been the end of ol' Tulia!" She couldn't help but joke with Mwana. Tulia felt a bond with the other lioness, and it always made her happy to make a new friend.
"A leader? Ahh, well. I think I'm a little too reckless for such authority. I'm happy being who I am, you know? I guess being blind makes me feel like I have to prove myself in other ways." She shrugged; it was hard to explain, and she'd never really opened herself up like this to anyone else but her sister. "I firmly believe that you only live once, and so you'd better enjoy the life you have before it's over, you know?" Tulia bit her lower lip. The conversation had taken a turn for the serious, and she wasn't quite sure how to proceed... so she just kept talking, "You know, Mwana. If you don't have a place to stay, you're welcome to join my pride. And if you're not ready to settle down, you're always welcome. I'm happy I have your friendship."

She couldn't help but tuck her tail a little, embarrassed but filled with a warm shy happiness for Tulia's generosity. "Thank you... but I am sure even a male wouldn't have been able to hurt you, you are far too kind." She replied, smiling softly.
Dipping her head softly she pondered for a moment, looking back up at Tulia with sincere eyes. "You are already far more accomplished than I... uh well, from what I can see though I've only just met you. You are much more confident and have a lot more ability.. I mean.. mm.. you seem happy and full of life..." Blushing deeply she lowered her head again, giving a soft nod as Tulia spoke.
"That makes sense, I think it takes a brave lioness to do so though, you seem very brave to me." Looking up with startled, grateful eyes she smiled shyly. She wasn't sure she was worthy of the offer, but the fact Tulia had given it meant a lot to her. "Thank you... I.. I'd love to come see your family. I... I'm not sure I can stay though, I... have.. " Blushing she trailed off, but the joy she felt in being asked was clear in her voice. It meant a lot to her that Tulia had considered her worth it.
