Mist had begun to settle as the night crept toward sunrise and a small pale lioness had found her way into the thick of it, settled in damp tall grasses that enveloped her like an odd cocoon. A sound was continuously escaping her throat, not particularly dissonant but not recognizable as any tune or word. Her eyes were shut tight as she rocked back and forth, enjoying the feeling of the drops of dew cooling her skin. She had little concept of the fact that most were not awake at this hour, little concept in fact that those that were would likely be on the hunt. Her mind was singularly focused on the feeling, a type of distraction that she was incredibly prone to.

The misty morning was the perfect setting for the leopardess' hunting. She moved stealthily through it without a whisper of sound. Beads of moisture clung to the tips of her thick fur, making her blend even better into her surroundings. Some of the damp was from the fog itself, and some was from the vegitation she brushed past or moved through.
It was that enchanting time of day she loved. The sky was turning a rich, deep shade of blue that she savored, and in the still quiet air, noises and smells traveled far and easily. She parted her jaws to inhale the crisp morning air, so different from any other time of day. Soon the sky would pale further, perhaps with streaks of pink and yellow, before the sun burst in full glory to dry the mist and reveal the creeping leopardess. She really needed to focus on the task of breakfast before this happened.
She was distracted, however, by a strange sound ghosting to her through the masking fog. Ears pricking at attention, she licked her jaws free of moisture. Puzzled by the odd noise, she prowled silently nearer, body tense and ready for action should it be required. For the life of her she couldn't figure out what the sound could possibly be. It did not match any remembered vocalization she'd heard from the many creatures she'd encountered. Her natural curiousity kicked in. She simply must know what this was!
Her paws moved swifter through the damp foliage until a shape formed just ahead. Was that... why, was it another feline making that noise?? Surprised, she crept closer, growing more alarmed that perhaps this female was somehow in pain. The rocking, the closed eyes, and the strange vocal all came together to worry her. With a low voice, pitched to not carry very far, even in this mist, she cautiously tried to draw attention to herself. "Are you well? Is aught wrong?"

Her ears were deaf to the noise, the low tone being completely outside her very limited register. She noticed the vibrations in the ground from the other's approach, but wasn't sure what they meant. Her body settled in the grasses, its rocking momentarily stalled as she lifted her head to see around. The other was mostly obscured, but she could make out a thick dark shape. Her jaw tightened and she froze, staring toward it. Feeling an anxiety rising she let out a high whine, her blue eyes jumping around the shape.

Oh now she'd done it! For a moment she stood there, eyes wide, wondering what to do next. She skittered forward and sideways, paws silent on the wet grass but her breath huffing out warm in the cool mist, stirring it in swirling patterns. She got near enough to see better. It was a pale, misty colored lioness. Awani was astonished to see how well the pale female blended into the morning mist. Why, if she hadn't been keening, theleopardess wouldn't have found her at all!
She thought quickly, then threw herself down nearby the lioness, limbs loose and relaxed. The other female was clearly frightned, and it was all she could think to do quickly to prove her good intent. "Shhh, it's okay! See? I'm just here to enjoy the morning too." To prove her point, she turned her gaze upwards again, though this time she hardly saw the beautiful deep blue. Something was wrong here, her instincts insisted upon it. What was wrong with the lioness? She angled her eyes to sneak a peek of her companion, as if to assess what in the world was going on.

Misae stared back awkwardly, the sound stopping abruptly as the leopardess threw herself down. She glanced upward when the other did, though she couldn't decipher what it meant. Confused but deciding that the leopardess was probably not a threat, she gestured to herself, then the other's mouth, and then back to herself. They always started talking, and they never understood until much later. She glanced at the grass, no, too tall to draw anything in the dirt. That would make it more difficult.

It was a relief when the lioness seemed to calm and stopped making that odd sound. It had set Awani's teeth on edge and set her fur to prickling uncomfortably. "There now," she began soothingly, but stopped, because the lioness was doing... something. She was gesturing... at Awani's face, and then to herself? Stranger and stranger. The leopardess' ears swiveled and she tipped her head quizzically. Clearly this was communication, but not at all the sort she expected. It wasn't... verbal. Verbal. Her swift mind clicked as the gears turned and fell into place. The lioness couldn't talk!
"Oh, I see now," she said carefully. She tapped her own lips with one pawtip. "You can't talk?" She again tipped her head quizzically. "That's got to be difficult to deal with." She took a brief flash of a moment to consider having to survive while unable to speak, and then gave her hide a shudder, scattering tiny droplets and making her fur stand up thick and warm. No, not exactly the best way to live life. Awani was grateful she had all her senses and was healthy.
She returned to the topic that had worried her originally. "Are you okay though? You aren't hurt? Maybe you are lost?" She stayed in a reclining position, but was still clearly alert and attentive. The sky above them lightened minutely, the mist gaining more of a luminescent glow to it, and inadvertently making the lioness harder to see, though Awani's own dark form stood out plainly.
