Ever since her brief stint in detention, Maritess has decided that she needed to stay fit. If that was the sort of activities the students were required to do, Jack knows what other physically demanding thing they would expect of the manananggal! Running had better not be on the list, though. And if it was they had better not take it against her if she just flew for the entirety of the exercise.

Gym was going to be awful. Tess just knew it. As she silently paced (in the only way a winged vampire lacking her entire lower body could) and bemoaned her future fate in school, her hand clenched tightly around one of her bat-books and before she knew it, she had hurled the poor thing into the air.

She gave a startled cry not just because she hadn't realized just how much stronger her arms had gotten since she had to rely on her arm strength without her lower-body to support her, but because the bat-book nearly hit someone! Tess was gasping apologies over and over even if she was still out of earshot of the other student. "Oh no! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so, so, so sorry!! I didn't hit you did I?"

Reading a book out in the clearing seemed like a good idea at the time for the Chupacabra, her eyes gazing down at the words on the page as a faint blush spread itself over her cheeks. She'd been taking a break from her recent stint at doing track practice - something she was growing to love and enjoy with each passing day. She was getting healthier (though not losing any weight) and soon Chuppi found she didn't really have to run on all fours to get a good speed going. She still did though, but that was beside the point.

She'd just gotten to a good part in her book when the sound of something falling attracted her attention and she looked up just in time to see the source - a falling book! With a shriek that knocked a few crows out of the nearby trees Chuppi leaped backwards and away from the offending item, taking herself much farther away than she really needed to. It was only when she heard someone calling out that she settled down from where she'd landed, in another tree, and she allowed herself to climb down the trunk. She slowly walked over to where she'd left her book and her thermos laying, the contents of the red bottle-item spilling since the top had popped off. Chuppi was not pleased, but she didn't cry. Yet.

"H...hmmm.....?"

She rubbed the corner of her eye with her hand as she looked at the person approaching, even if she could only see about half of them. . . .wait, was there only half of them to see anyway?! The Chupcabra did her best not to panic, but that was weird!

The sound of large, flapping bat wings grew fainter as Tess got closer. The manananggal looked aghast as she soared towards the spot where her bat-book landed, still repeating apologies as if it were some sort of mantra. "Are you okay? I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to throw the book at you. I mean, I did mean to throw the book but I didn't mean to throw it that hard! And and not at you! Oh I'm so sorry! She finished when she finally got close enough to see who it was she almost beaned with the book.

She didn't think that it was her appearance that caused the other student any discomfort, attributing it more to the fact that she had almost hit her! Spying the spilled contents of the thermos, Tess had one more reason to apologize. "Oh no! Was that your snack? I'm really sorry about this! Let me make it up to you!" she insisted, wringing her hands forlornly. Now that she had gotten a better look at her almost-victim, Tess could have sworn she looked familiar. Not even realizing she hadn't given the other ghoul a chance to respond to her first barrage of questions, she followed up "Aren't you Belladonna's friend?"

Chuppi didn't talk at first, her mind still too dumb-struck over the fact that her thermos had spilled and she was slowly losing her meal, and instead of saying anything when she recovered she instead moved and started to try and fix the thermos up. What was lost was lost (she knew better than to eat blood off the ground!) but that didn't mean she couldn't salvage whatever was left, right? There was no time to waste in idle chatter as she sniffed and tried not to cry massive tears over not having anything to eat, and in spite of her best efforts she felt a few spill down her cheeks.

" . . . .hic....."

A hiccup followed shortly after as she capped the bottle and looked at the stranger, red eyes even redder from tears.

"I. . . .I'm hungry now. Yo tengo hambre!!"

Wow, this conversation was going no where fast. The other girl was trying to talk to Chuppi and hopefully calm her down, apologize even, but the shock of having something thrown at her (after so long) and spilling her drink? That was almost too much for the overly sensitive Chupacabra to bear. she hiccup again as more monster tears ran down her cheek and, without even remembering that this person was the cause of her unhappiness, Chuppi moved and wrapped her arms around as much of Tess as she could. It looked awkward and likely felt awkward, but Chuppi needed to be comforted, darn it!

Oh no. Oh no! Maritess couldn't believe this. She made the other student cry. This was bad. Very, very, very bad! Not only because she might get detention for this (if there wasn't there a rule against making another student cry, there most certainly would be one against throwing things at them, well there had been one in her old school) but because she made another student cry! And not on purpose! Mentally she berated herself for seemingly making things worse and not knowing how she was going to make this right.

And then the other ghoul hugged her.

She blinked dumbly at first, stunned to silence, never once anticipating such a reaction. Was this a trick, Tess wondered. But still, the manananggal's hands found themselves carefully patting the girl's shoulders (because those quills were sharp as she soon quickly found), and making soft shushing sounds in between gently murmuring, "I'm really, really sorry."

Maritess made up her mind: No more throwing anything ever again. Except maybe to throw things away and only into the proper disposal units. Oh Jack dammit, how was she supposed to keep in shape now? She supposed flying in circles over the campus would have to suffice. Maybe she should consider using the chin-up bar in her room to do chin-ups apart from her bed?

It didn't matter that the other girl was apologizing right away, Chuppi was still crying. Her face was buried into whatever was there of the torso before her and her sharp fingers dug into the fabric of the shirt. Her wails were thankfully nothing like the screech she'd used on the still stunned birds and squirrels or else there could have been trouble for both of them. Puking students was not something Chuppi really wanted to see.

It was several more moments of crying before Chuppi managed to calm herself down over the loss of her blood (the Thermos was still half full, but she either didn't know or didn't care), and even a few more after that as she waited for her tears to dry up. Chuppi's small shoulders shook as her trembling slowed to a dull rumble before completely stopping. It was about this point in time that she finally noticed the other student and how she'd been clinging to her, not to mention ruining her top, and Chuppi quickly released her companion before backing up with a look of embarrassment flush on her cheeks.

"Ah...lo siento! I...I didn't mean to. . . ."

Thankfully she was too tired to cry anymore or there would have been a repeat of the waterworks.

To say that Tess was uncomfortable was an understatement. What in Jack's name was she supposed to do to calm the sobbing student down? Say something? Sing something? Promise eternal servitude or at least until they graduate? Maybe Tess should promise her something to eat or drink? Oooh, she could write home for some amniotic fluid! That always cheered her up! Maybe this small student would like some? She would think about that a bit more, uncertain whether amniotic fluids fell in the category of acquired taste because her parents told her the unborn young certainly did.

With her thoughts on food, Tess continued to pat the other ghoul's shoulders before she felt the body clinging to her pull away. Crimson eyes studied the other student carefully, not in the least bit concerned about the state of her dress.

"Feeling better?" she asked cautiously, the corners of her lips pulled in a small, non-threatening, and hopefully, comforting smile. "What does lo shento mean? I'm afraid I don't speak that language." She chuckled sheepishly, hoping it would break the embarrassed tension between them or at least make it obvious she was just as embarrassed.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 12, 2010 2:29 pm

"Lo...lo siento means 'I'm sorry' in my native Language, Espanol - Spanish. When...I speak it more than I should, I need to focus on English."

Chuppi rubbed the tip of her nose and part of her cheeks with one of her hands in an effort to wipe away any proof that she'd been crying though the evidence was pretty strong if someone looked at the other girl's stop. It was practically ruined with tears (and a little bit of snot) so there was no denying that Chuppi had been hysterically in a fit only moments earlier. Maybe she should show how really sorry she was and buy the girl a new shirt?

"I. . . . I got a little upset because my thermos spilled. Half of my meal is in there and I. . . do not like to be hungry. I'm sorry again for crying."

The puddle of blood had started to dry up beneath the lazy sun in the Halloweentown sky, and its smell as it got warmer was nothing short of unpleasant. Chuppi's nose wrinkled at the scent, she liked blood warm but she didn't like it curdling, and part of her wanted to stomp over and bury it to make the smell go away. Another part of her told her she should hurry up and eat it. The voice of reasoning to eat it was slowly winning.

"I suppose I could always go and hunt for more before track practice. . . . "

Maritess nodded as the other ghoul explained in a somewhat rambling manner, but Tess was in no position to talk as her own mouth had a habit of yammering on too quickly before her brain could catch up.

"Again, I'm really sorry about that," she didn't mention the thermos and the book, it was a given, wasn' it? Plus, it might make the other student cry again and Tess decided she'd rather not have a repeat of that as glanced down at her blouse that had seen better days. Thank Jack it wasn't her favorite one, she didn't know how she would react to having the dress with all the ruffles and ribbons covered in tears and was that snot? Tess managed to keep herself from making a face, mentally chiding herself considering she'd been stuck to the jacking bathroom wall so this was nothing. Well, it should be. The manananggal was still going to give herself a quick scrub.

"I-it's no problem, if you want I could-" she paused in the middle of her offer to help the smaller ghoul hunt for more when she heard the words "Track practice? There's a track team at this school?" she asked, all thoughts of ruined blouses and spilled food and nearly committing assault pushed aside for the moment.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:30 pm

"No need to say sorry. I'm the one who ruined your pretty shirt, it's all my fault. Can you forgive me?"

The monster really, really hoped the answer would be 'yes'.

"The track team is starting new this year since they kept losing before and were disbanded. Me and another student named Tybalt are making the new one."

Chuppi rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand in an effort to get rid of the last of her small tantrum, thankful that her skin was a darker shade of green that allowed the redness that crying brought to hardly show up. Also, her always were a natural red - no one would be able to tell she'd been crying just by looking at them either. Not that anyone would every actually look into a chpacabra's eyes. That was basically asking for trouble.

"Why do you ask? Do you like track?"

The fact that this other student (clearly an undead since she was missing half her body) didn't have legs was wasted on Chuppi. Maybe it just meant she liked to fly and crawl on her hands and um...elbows!

"I have more shirts, it's fine," Tess nodded almost hastily, because it was fine. Really. Her mother had insisted she overpack clothes and Tess was glad to have reason to deconstruct the fairly sizable number of blouses and dresses she had.

"I do like track!" she exclaimed in excitement. "I used to like running but I didn't do so well with the hurdles and oh..." it suddenly occurred to Tess that she wouldn't be able to try out for the team. Not for running at least, she thought as she glanced down to her lack of legs. "Um, not anymore." If she had feet, Tess would have been scuffing them nervously against the ground. "B-but aren't there other events in track besides running and hurdles?" she asked hopefully, her hands clasped together in front of her.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:13 am

"Other events? Oh, you mean ones that don't have running because you're not good at hurdles?"

Chuppi was STILL NOT NOTICING SHE DID NOT HAVE LEGS. that or something had clicked in her brain and told her that perhaps this girl was uncomfortable talking about the missing appendages enough that the chupacabra should avoid mentioning them at all costs. Tact was something she developed at a young age, though sometimes she simply forgot how to use it and often said whatever she wanted to say.

"Um...they have the javelin? Do you know what I say? It's the event where you throw something and try to get it as far as you can. If you threw that book to me from over there then maybe you can do that! You look like your arms are very strong."

The monster took a step closer to the undead girl and actually reached out and touched her, clawed fingers lightly tapping against pale skin. This other person didn't seem to have much muscle on her but that book could not have been so easy to though like that.

"Maybe even the pumpkin toss! Do you want to try? We have some things at the track that I am finding from the teachers!"

Whether it was out of consideration or tact or genuine obliviousness, Maritess was very grateful that the other ghoul had not mentioned the winged undead's lack of legs. Or at least was not drawing attention to it. Either way it made Tess happy and a happy Tess meant enthusiasm and an eagerness to make others happy. Which was rather detrimental to her desire to reinvent herself but at the moment it was the last thing on Tess' mind.

Because jack it all, Tess has a chance to be involved in track! Screw reinventing herself! "Oh! The javelin's that long not-spear thing, yes?" she clarified, she had seen that event but had never tried her hand at it. Perhaps now that her arms were being used twice as much, she could actually stand to be decent at it! When clawed fingers lightly tapped against her skin, she didn't pull away, "My arms have gotten stronger since-" she stopped herself before she ended up revealing the embarrassing truth about her missing limbs, "-I was enrolled in the academy." she quickly supplied.

It wasn't a lie! Tess didn't want to lie to the other ghoul whose name she now realized she didn't know. "I would love to try! Very, very much miss, um, er, I forgot to ask your name..."

Trying to join the team without knowing the organizer's name, for shame, Tess! For shame!

"My name? Um. . .. Chuppi. It's actually Temes but it's hard to say so people call me Chuppi. I am a Chupacabra, what are you? You must be an undead because I do not know many mosnters who have wings and no legs."

Ah there, she finally mentioned the legs. . . but it was more in passing than anything else. The half-torso girl was really nice and Chuppi liked her, so there wasn't a reason to say anything. Maybe her new friend didn't like that being mentioned either? She'd only talked about her arms after all.

"Well, that's not true. I have meet a Llorona once, she didn't have feet! She was loud too, and not very nice like you. I think she didn't have any feet because she wanted to be carried. Mi padre said we needed to run away if we ever saw her again."

Running away was something they did a lot to the more humanoid monsters or demons they came across. It was probably partly to blame for Chuppi's cowardice against anything larger than herself.

"And yes! The javelin is the spear thing. I think you would be good at it. Come with me and we can try?"

Maritess was grinning wide. Very, very wide. She may even look deranged. Granted the ear-reaching smile that bared her fangs to their fullest was out of happiness, it still looked deranged. Hopefully Chuppi would not think her utterly batty (pun not intended) for it.

"I am Maritess, but please call me Tess. It's very nice to meet you, Chuppi," she nodded, happy that despite starting out on the wrong foot (pun still not intended) things were turning out splendidly. "I'm a manananggal, which is also very hard to say, but my kind is a sort of vampire and we don't have legs when we have wings." She wondered vaguely if she should mention their favorite food are unborn but that didn't seem necessary at the moment. "I've never heard of a Llorona, but there's a kind of monster where I'm from that wants to be carried too, so it pretends to be a human baby when it cries. Maybe they're related?" Hey, it could happen, couldn't it? Though Tess would rather not be carried. At least not by anyone whom she wasn't on intimate terms with. It wouldn't be proper otherwise.

At the Chupacabra's suggestion her wings flapped harder in excitement, though they made no sound. "Oh! Yes! Please! Lead the way!" she would be skipping happily after Chuppi if she could. But since she couldn't (no legs) she contented herself with continuing to wear that deranged I-am-so-happy grin.
