A towhead peeked through the door leading to the courtyard, a tentative head grasping the jamb briefly before pulling himself outside. He blinked as his pale yellow-green eyes adjusted to the twilight. Even compared to this and the darkness-bleached world of early evening, the Asylum in broad daylight was a cave. Photinus took a deep breath of the cool, fresh air and a faint smile came to his face. I wonder if we're allowed out here indefinitely. I would stay in a tent instead of a room, if I could...In addition to this wonderful respite, the outdoors provided something else that Photinus craved. He pulled his other hand from its pocket and looked at his palms. Each hand glowed faintly and against his will. Their brightness seemed to be connected to his moods and other unconscious triggers; he had yet to discover whether he could control them. Around him several tiny insects spread out and explored the yard. The fireflies that seemed attracted to him were stretching their wings. Sometimes he wished he could fly too. Get out of this place... but where would he go? His whole life seemed to be a nightmare. What if he had been let go, with no strange hybrid traits, to lead a normal life? Could he honestly function in normal society? A derisively jaded inner voice thought the idea preposterous on every front. With a sigh, the firefly boy stretched and spun in a lazy circle, feeling air currents ribbon around his fingers in the rapidly waning daylight. It's okay... If I can have moments like this, I'll be all right...

This place was very interesting. There were so many oddities running threw this place which in turn was odd enough. The halls were dark and lonely and filled with sadness and tragedy. These dark halls were her new home and as she made her way out towards a small side green courtyard She had found it before wail walking along the halls on her first week there.
As her tight black leather boots brought her closer to the entrance of the courtyard her dark eyes fell on to the form of someone else was already occupying the space in the courtyard. She lowered her dark gaze as her black and red eyes fell on a bright glow that seemed to be coming from the the figure's hands. Her full lips formed an "O". The light was so beautiful and bright. Her hands moved to the soft red glows of her arms.
She was so draw by the bright glow. It was so very nice even better than the the setting sun. And as the light started to get darker the glowing hands almost seemed to grow brighter. This caused her to move slowly into the grounds. Outside in the open she felt more in danger. So she moved to the closest bushes and watched him. As she kelt there watching him, she had forgotten that her own body gave off a red glow and was causing the bush to give off the red glow. That got more apparent as the twilight started to embrace the darkness of night.

Firefly-green eyes slipped from their skyward stare only after the first of the stars had burned their way through the heavy gauze of the evening sky. His hands likewise fell to his sides as he stopped spinning. The sensation of movement, that he was drifting lethargically, continued. His sight remained fuzzy and unfocused as they re-adjusted to looking earthward, thus at first, the faint reddish glow went unnoticed.
But the darkness was almost complete; staying outside was dangerous for one who acts as a beacon in the night. As he approached the door, his firefly companions whizzing from their meanderings to return to his side with a swirl if fuzzy green light, he noticed that the bushes seemed to glow faintly red. Closer still, he realized the truth, that someone who glowed, like him, was causing the phenomenon. His eyes widened and with a start, he came to a stop. "Who's there?" He tried to sound more sure of himself than he was; he failed.

Dimas watched from her bushes the spin as he gazed skywards. The stars came out to join in the male and the fireflies' dance. He seemed to happy and excited much different than those within the building so near them. Maybe he was one that was forced to stay outside and unwelcome within the 'safety' of the Asylum. Though now as it grew darker he moved back towards the door. Maybe he was just as lost as she was after all.
As he turned and his focus came to land on her she glance down at herself for the first time. Her body seemed to be glowing brighter than normal and she winced at the fact he had spotted her. As he spoke she looked up. She wondered if she did not speak if he would come closer or move away but she pursed her lips slightly as she moved to stand.
Her actions were smooth and fluid as she rose up from the safety of the bushes. Her actions were slow and the shifting of the glow signaled her rise before she stood. She unfolded her tall slender but 'heavily' curved body. Tight black top hugged to her large full breasts. A equally tight skirt kissed her round thighs. Her face was shadowed by her black hair, thick strands of glowing shorter hair swirled with the midnight darkness. Her red glowing patterns made her already crimson and blood colored skin take one a more glistening and wet look. "I...am here..."

Photinus' eyes widened immensely as he beheld the shape that formed before him. Her shapely curves did more to give him an illusion of thick, oozing liquid, together with her deep red color and softly fluid movements, than it did reveal a sensuous feminine form. He shuddered deeply, frozen in terror as he recalled memories that he had with every fiber of his being attempted to suppress. Blood... everywhere... "Nng..." Valiantly he wrestled with images that superimposed themselves over what he really saw. Her glow was like a spotlight that shone on a tableau similar to one he once actually witnessed, and her flowing movements shifted and oozed with a crimson liquid that was not really there.
Shaky hands reached up and grabbed fistfuls of blond hair and he squeezed his eyes shut, taking deep, steadying breaths. He tried to think rationally, that this was a girl who could glow and happened to be red. Maybe she is some kind of star hybrid. Stars are nice. This is a nice girl... Well, he could hope she was nice. The twinge of doubt made his eyes squeeze together more tightly. Just relax. 'That' isn't going to happen again, not even here. This place is better than there. Needles aren't as scary as that. Okay. Open your eyes.
Fireflies swooped in front of his vision. A breeze made him realize how hot he was and how chilled the pit of his stomach had become. This was really very mortifying, to lose himself like this. It didn't matter even if she was made of blood, it wasn't her fault that he had certain issues that he had to deal with... He took one last deep breath and let go of his now-tingling hair, attempted to straighten it and approached her slowly, much more calmly. She seemed just as tentative as he did, after all.
"I'm sorry, I... I'm Photinus," he said softly and sheepishly while holding out his hand. "Ah..." He dropped it again, for it must be rather strange to have a glowing hand held out to shake. "I'm part firefly. The glow won't harm you."

Dimas's dark eyes watched as his pale eyes widened and darkened with fear and memories. Her right hand moved to take ahold of her left had just at the elbow. The sound he made made her exposed flat belly tighten in a wince. No one had ever looked at her with so much fear. Was she really the horrible to look at? She had not looked at her face since she had been with the fear program. She was told that it might be a bit hard on her and after she had seen the condition of her arms and legs she really did not want to see her face. She lowered her gave her thick black hair falling forward over her body blocking out some of the light as she took a step back.
She listened to him shifting around a bit and she watched the skin tight black and red patterned top covering her voluptuous chest. She tired to hide her glow but as of yet she had no real control over them. But she had been practicing. After all so far she had a room to herself. She could hear a foot fall of he moving and she figured that he was moving back inside. But his voice sounded closer. She lifted her head. This action unlike her stand was not as fluid it was a bit jerky and her dark eye looked over his face for a moment before the glowing extended hand got her attention.
The bright yellow glow was so beautiful. So warm and giving like the sun. When he lowered it she shook her head and moved forward her hands extending to take up his one. "It is very pretty....your glow...Photinus...." Her voice was soft and shy. When she drew closer her body was smooth and dry unlike his visions even her touch though a bit on the cool side was dry and soft. "I'm...Dimas..."

Photinus was startled when she took hold of his hand and watched in wonder the care she took when she touched him. Why were people always so curious and interested in their glow? They were such a source of pain for him. But perhaps in her there was a sense of kinship between them. He remembered - in his fear he had nearly forgotten and overlooked the fact that she was the source of the shrub's glow. He now peered into her face curiously and looked her up and down, more childlike at the moment than anything. He reached up to touch her arm where many rune-like designs glowed -under?- the surface. Her skin here, like her hand, surprisingly, were all dry just like normal skin.
"You're..." You're dry. "Your skin..." He smiled and sighed, "It's very pretty. I'm sorry; at first, I thought I saw blood. But now, it looks very different up close." He turned her hand over and under with his, their glowing skin alternating. "Yes, it's very pretty. How is it you glow like me?"

Dimas smiled her hair still covering her patterned pocked face. The few marks on her face were around her eyes and cheeks and looked a bit like glowing freckles. Her lips were slightly darker than the rest of her face. Her eyes were surrounded by dark circles and the white of her eyes when they finally met his were pitch black. Her eyes were a bright crimson that her body. She watched as he looked her over. She, her hands still clasped around one of his followed his gaze. She was surprised to feel his eyes on her. Normally people had over looked her in life. She was just another person at the beach who had never gone in.
As his hand touched her arm she gave an involuntary gasp. It was odd to feel someone else's touch. Since her transformation and transportation almost no one touched her. Most people seemed to avoid her. But then again she was sure she looked like something out of a horror movie. His words confirmed her thoughts. Looking up at him from under the curtains of her hair she tried to give a smile, it came off a bit creepy like a mournful ghost prowling the earth for the lover she had lost or killed. "You think it is pretty? Yes...in the light...I am colored like blood...and when wet...I feel a bit like blood." She looked down as he moved their hands much like a child watching a magic trick. Her lips formed a small "o".
When hre hand was above his their combined light gave off a orange-ish glow. She gave a soft giggle and shifted her hand under his as she looked up into his pale green eyes again, "Well...they tried to fix my fear with a rare deep water jellyfish's DNA....you might not know of it...It is the vampire jellyfish." She half expected him to pull away at the name and she did not blame him. The fact that she liked dark clothes and had long black hair made her look more gothic and vampire like. At least she did not crave blood, though there was a different liquid she did crave.

In a way, in Dimas it was as if his nightmares had come to life. Pretty, gentle girls covered in blood. But her appearance seemed to bother her the same way his transformation bothered him. He smiled sadly. "The government wanted people to glow in the dark. They thought it would make inmates easier to find if they tried to escape. But they used the wrong DNA, because some fireflies are predators, it made things worse. The people with the right DNA were victims of the people with the wrong DNA. But they wanted to see if it would work differently on people who aren't criminals. They found that the results were pretty much the same. So you can imagine why blood bothers me..." And men... He recoiled a little without letting go of her hand. It isn't her fault... He looked up at her smiling shyly. "I guess there are some good things about it though."
He chuckled with her; she had a nice smile and her laughter was contagious. "I'm not familiar with the vampire jellyfish. I don't suppose the experiment helped...?"

Those dark little eyes light up with fear at such a horrible reason to do such an experiment. She brought his hand up to her lips and kissed the palm of the bright glowing limb. And held the warm hand to her cheek, her eyes shutting as she tried to wipe out the idea of someone killing off innocent fireflies and humans. "That is horrible...I am sorry my flesh reminds you of those times...I...I can put on more covering clothes if you like. We can go to my room and I can hide my glow."
She looked up at him his chuckle though brief was warm and made her feel a bit relaxed. "No...now I care and need the thing I fear the most." She looked down allowing their joined hands to drop down and hang between them. "I have lived by the ocean all my life. My parents were surfers and swimmers, they won awards...but as far back as I can remember I have been terrified of the water...." she shook her head slowly she did not want to just bore him with the details of her irrational fear so she skipped the drawn out story, "I got a letter in the mail for a new government project on beating ones fears....and I joined up..." she gave a sad laugh, "I didn't even know a vampire jellyfish existed...until now."

"No, no, I don't think you should hide yourself from me. I think the best way anyone can overcome their fear is to face it. Isn't that how the saying goes?"
He ran fingers through his hair and tried to hide the blush that had come to his cheeks. A girl does not kiss the hand of a boy, but she had and somehow it felt just as intimate. They had just met, she could be using him somehow; this thought came to the back of his mind and tickled his brain. But he shrugged it off. He was sick of trusting no one. He tried to think of why she might be so afraid though her family were such accomplished swimmers. The only thing that came to mind are trauma that happen in infancy: sometimes a person won't remember why they are afraid, just that they are.
"Maybe we can help each other face our fears," he said softly. "There's no ocean here, but maybe still we can safely help you through it."

The crimson fingers of Dimas finally allowed the glowing digits of the firefly to slide free allowing their joined hands to part. "I don't mind hiding if it will bring you more comfort. I am sure I am not easy to look at." she lowered her eyes to her arm turning it over as she looked over her dark flesh.
"That is the saying...I used to go to the beach every day...and try to get in the water. But I could never get close enough to...even touch me." She gave a soft sigh before his next set of words hit her. She looked up at him and gave another creepy little smile. "You really think we can help each other and our fears?" She felt so happy she could hug him. She reached out a hand to touch the shirt on his shoulder. "Thank you Photinus..."
No one had ever brought up the word safely when they had tried to help her in the past. She leaned forward her full breasts pressing against his chest as she placed a soft kiss on his cheek. "I will gladly help you safely face any of your fears as well..." she could not help but give a small giggle as she looked up at the sky, "Oh it is fully dark now..." she said softly as her eyes for the first time noticed the free flying fireflies around them. She held out her hand slowly to try and tempt one to land on her. She had seen the jar at Photinus' waist and just now figured out that maybe that was why he had come out here, to collect some more friends.

"No, I think I would rather see someone like you all the time and remember that those are just memories now." He nodded solemnly to her. It wasn't a boyscout kind of seriousness, it was the seriousness of a real survivor. "I really do think we can help each other. I've heard there are patients with small pools in their room, or perhaps there is another way, a bath tub to start, or perhaps a swimming pool. It would be just a small depth of water so you'd never be in any danger. And I wouldn't leave you while you're in the water, because it is so much more terrifying to face when you're alone..."
Though he was more or less finished with his earnest rambling, trailing off, his movement ceased entirely in shock as she leaned against him and kissed him. Suddenly it was difficult to think of being afraid when distracted by the question of whether he had ever considered how very female her shape was. He felt safe in her embrace but also in a different kind of danger altogether.
To say he was relieved by her own distraction would be an understatement. "Ah... y-yeah... But that was why I was going inside. It's more difficult to hide outside when you glow in the dark." Though he was nervous she seemed at ease and was enjoying herself with the little glowing insects. "I don't know why they are attracted to me. They could stay outside and free but they always follow me back in."

Dimas could not help but earnestly like the firefly boy in front of her. He was so kind in willing to help her with her fear. And though she could tell that she was hard to look at for him he was willing to be with her and let her be herself. "I can do the bath tubs. But anything deeper than that freaks me out. I don't think I would be ready for a pool even if you were holding me the entire time..." the light on her cheeks darkened with blush at the thought. Water already brought her body so much pleasure and someone willing to let her cling to them in fear calmed her mind, making for a brief moment the water seem like a very good thing.
"Well maybe they don't want to leave you alone and what to give you peace to the darkness in your past and that haunts the halls of this place." She turned to him and held out her hand for the wandering firefly to head off towards its much preferred perk of Photinus. "I am sure if there were another deep sea creature like me I would....for better or worse be drawn to it." Her dark eyes looked a bit distracted for a moment before she took his hand again, "Come on...we can talk inside in my room...if you don't want to be out in the open." She could feel herself wanting to be up beat and happy for the firefly. He made it so easy to forget being so alone and trying not to be a burden on anyone.

Photinus smiled gently, "Then a pool is too much right now. It's something you'd work up to, and it's something you would take a while to get used to."
He frowned faintly at what she said about his fireflies. It seemed a little deep for a bug. But he too was a 'bug,' so perhaps it wasn't all that far-fetched. Even so, her short moments of distraction left him wondering whether she was thinking of something else. What it might be he could only guess, but he did not care to. It would be like gossiping.
His hand automatically grasped hers when he reached for it. But her suggestion seemed a little too... Well, what other safe place could we go to, my room? "Er, what about your room mate? Do you have one? That wouldn't be an imposition, would it?" He was not about to resist her, but he was just the type to worry about such things, partly out of concern and partly out of a sense of self-preservation.
