Someone just donated 500k to me to help with prizes for my contest. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to invest it in items, since I won't need to use it for a few months and that way the prize will be bigger.
But I don't want to spend it on an item and lose money!
Anyone good with the marketplace that can give me a few hints?

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with donation items anymore... They seem to be pretty stagnant.
Even EIs are pretty flat until the last gen leaves the cash shop. To make the biggest return on EIs, you need to have a first gen of something which will be successful (although these new rapid EIs are a different matter) and then sell it after it's finished evolving (although this could backfire if it doesn't meet expectations).
I think the biggest return is on RIG items... like, the expensive 500k+ ones. But again, it's hard to judge because you don't know which ones will be rereleased with the next RIG...
